Have you ever asked yourself why Ooni is often invited to represent the Yorubas by the Federal Government and at various national and international fora?

There's this picture I stumbled on recently which was taken almost a century ago. The five most prominent Yoruba obas held a meeting @ Oyo town. Guess the sitting arrangement of their group photograph. Ooni sat in the middle and was flanked by Alaafin, Alake, Awujale and Oba of Benin. That should clear all doubts of confused minds like yours on who's the superior between the two paramount rulers.

Recently, the Alake of Egba land even confirmed again that Oonirisa is number one among Yoruba monarchs, followed by iku Baba yeye (Alaafin), and then Oba of Benin, Alake and Awujale. You probably know more than Alake and other Yoruba historians on the supremacy of Ooni in Yoruba land.

Please, note that I'm neither from Ile-Ife nor from Oyo, but I am well informed about my race and culture.

As the paramount king of Yorubaland, Alafin Oyo is the only one who can confer national Yoruba titles on the people. As an Ijebu, I know Alafin is supreme over even Awujale and all other obas, but very humble, we just have to follow the history.

Ooni is not an Oba but a spiritual leader. A custodian of the Orisas. Alaafin is the paramount king of Yorubaland, he's next to the Orisas.The only Oba with a real empire under his belt. Politics and Abacha's looted money wanted to do abracadabra to Yoruba Obaship through the last Ooni via backdoor, but we all.saw how he was ridiculed. No one will succeed in rewriting Yoruba history, even the new Ooni is just playing around on his hands, he knows his limits.

I am a good student of history and apart from oral tradition, i have read from great historians like ade_ajayi, akinjogbin, even samuel johnson. Oyos can never claim that their own oral tradition is superior to Ifes.

Brother, you need to read more about the culture and ask questions. monarch of oyo empire in yoruba history is the most revered by all yorubas and other yoruba kings as well as non yoruba kingdoms as far as and beyond present day Togo.countless kingdoms pay dues to the old oyo empire and it is documented that the Aremo festival(celebration of the crown prince)commands the presence of kings,nobles and subjects from within and outside the shores of present day south west nigeria,hence the sobriquet 'lku, baba,yeye' which apty fits your definition of 'lord' or 'god king' as most of the terrain their empire strecthed to see them as.Even the kakanfo(field marshal,yes) and baloguns(generals)under his commands at any point in time instill fear in majority if not all of the other kingdoms and settlements.However,The oonirisa,while a great king of the yoruba nations as well,is a king in the land that is highly revered by all yorubas as the abode of the deities and the progenitor of yoruba kings,the alaafin inclusive(Oduduwa).Hope i have shed more light on that?
