So what do you suggest? To renew passport and travel with both?
bbaby84:

It's not advisable. The airline may refuse you boarding.

Yes sir or ma. It's what I would do.

You don't need to change name now. You can do that later on.

rainazoe:
For reals? I'd contact the airline. And it brings me back to my question, do I get the passport in my married name or retain my maiden name?

We keep going back and forth, can't make up our minds!
As Kontagious said in the other thread, this post PPR phase is something else. After one headache comes another one. Lol.
I wish we had a close family member over there, the "where" decision would have been an easy one.

We're still looking at BC but the research keeps giving me all sorts. Vancouver: expensive no jobs, Abbotsford: drugheads, Victoria: expensive no jobs and on and on. Jobs are not an issue for me because I freelance, this is mainly for my husband.
And I'd really like for us to start life in a proper city then move to wherever we decide. Ayam tayad of the research jare.
We've looked at other provinces but we just keep returning to the beginning.

This is a clarion call to anyone in BC willing to take me under their wing, I be good pikin. Hep needed.
All that cold and snow of other provinces is scaring me s***less.

Good day house.

Please who has travelled from Nigeria and landed with their passport having less than 6 months validity, or with a renewed passport. Please how did you do it?
Kindly share.

I landed on the 2nd March, 2018. My International passport will expire on 10th June, 2018. I had no problem with Ethiopian airline, there was no question about the validity of my passport even the CBSA guys said nothing about it. All the CBSA guy told me was " WELCOME HOME".
So, it was not an issue with me.
I hope this helps.

This passport validity matter.....I think we may be overthinking it. The rules are dependent on your destination country. Whatever the rules are determine what the airline would accept. For example, the United States has certain countries from which it requires a 6 months validity on their passports as at point of entry, however Nigeria isn't one of them. I have flown from Nigeria to the states on a passport that was to expire 6 weeks after my date of entry.
This seems consistent with kay2011's experience.

@rainazoe, even if you change the name on your passport, the name on your pr card would be the name on your copr.

It'll be very tough. It can become expensive as well.

Depends on what part of Canada. If in GTA, it's not too bad. Was initially planning on buying a car but no one will sell to me without a valid G or G2 license.

Bus and sometimes UberX is definitely cheaper than a car. Just less convenient. Insurance is about 400CAD a month, then monthly financing, gas, etc.

HI. CONGRATS!!!!!
about the visa refusal for your spouse, what country did she get a refusal into?

i have a question, we just applied for this 2 weeks ago. anyway, so my spouse was refused visa into the US in December 2017, but i didnt state that in my application neither did i upload her refusal letter. will that be a problem?

Better send a CSE and include it. US is the easiest one for them to get. Cos they can ban you for misrepresentation.

I didn't but you can get a new passport and travel with the two. Just make sure the old passport has cancelled without prejudice on the blank pages.

I'd think passport validity would only come into play if you are attempting to travel on a temporary resident visa of some sort.

You guys are PRs for goodness sake! You have right of entry!!! shocked grin

This is not correct, I contacted Lufthansa customer service yesterday and was told that passport validity must be at least 3 months at the time of boarding. So guys please contact your airline before jumping into conclusion.

Yes. Renew your passport and travel with both... Some people have done that successfully.

Hi. Please can you take me through the process of converting ACCA to CPA. your response will be highly appreciated.

czaratwork:
It will be wrong for people to come here and say someone has not made preparations before landing just because the person is not lucky to have gotten a job before or immediately after landing.

I am not supposed to go into the details of my preparations but if that will make some people feel better, I need to state it here that immediately i got my PR back home, i started the process of CPA conversion with the mindset that i will go into accounting career having gained that experience in my banking career. i spoke with some people who gave me leads to companies that hire accountants and i started applying right from home.

I am sure the same applies to everyone who had plans of relocating because some of us were communicating ourselves on CPA conversion. I am just apalled by the way we draw conclusions for others.

If it doesnt bother you about peoples struggles, give them the benefit of doubt that they have done their ground work well before moving. I see a lot of people here asking questions as soon as they get their PR and believe they are also preparing for their relocation.

You can believe whatever you want to believe if that makes you better. Like i said i was prepared for this.

Good day people,

Just to give an update which may be beneficial to anyone on passport expiry less than 6 months before travelling.

So my application was approved and i got all our passports and COPRs in January 2018. My passport was due to expire in May 2018. My spouse however, insisted i renew my passport before we travel because we did not know if we would be allowed to travel with less than six moths validity on my passport. I called Lufthansa and they do not seem to have a fulfilling response as they do not understand what an immigrant visa was and that it is better to have a validity above 6 months so as to avoid any hassles. I renewed my passport and wrote an email to Ottawa, Accra and LVO to inform them i would be renewing my visa. My thinking was that the visa would still be valid as with other visas i have experienced. The next day our CIC/Express Entry profile changed from Approved to "We are awaiting a decision....." and all the counterfoil information removed.

To my great surprise i received an email from LVO that all previously issued COPRs were cancelled and invalid, and we should send all documents (including all family members) back to Accra and wait for further instructions. We were all worried. We sent all the documents through DHL back to Accra and waited for further instructions. 2 days after i received the email requesting for us to pay $120CAD through the online platform for visa re-issue which i did immediately. Then the sudden silence from LVO starts; and we have 5 more weeks until our validity expires, no update on our account profile and no information from them for about 3 weeks and until today that our application on the profile now shows approved. New counterfoil issued and the old ones shown as invalid.
thank u for sharing this information.people will be able to refer it when in such situation.I will like to know how long after approval will a PUM be sent.also does approval means the passport has been stamped with visa?
Re: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by rainazoe: 9:54pm On Mar 13, 2018
Let me breakdown my journey.

I emailed CPA British Columbia asking for guidance on how to commence and I was asked to send my transcript (post), resume & acca cert (email) and ACCA letter of good standing (emailed to them by acca). The letter of good standing can be gotten by simply mailing ACCA with your details and the request from CPA-BC. I also filled a form sent to me. The name on the form should agree with that on your ACCA certificate.

Once they receive the docs mentioned above and they are satisfied, you are asked to take the overview on law in tax course. It costs about CAD560 (tax inclusive). Once you get your certificate, you email it to CPA-BC.

Next mail from them would be to complete the tax exempt form to prove you are non resident in CA aling with a copy of a utility bill. You will also post notarised copies of two IDs (I used my intl passport and drivers license). You also get to fill another form which should be hand signed by a supervisor.

What I am waiting for is my final bill to membership.

NB: CPA-BC can be very slow in responding. Other people say CPA-Ontario is a better option for the membership process.

In addition, others did WES course by course evaluation for those that used WES for credential verification instead of sending transcript. I did use WES for verification but went the transcript route as it was cheaper.

Approval means your application has been approved for visa to be issued and passport can now be stamped with visa. It is after stamping the visas that PUM will be sent. From both experiences, PUM comes within 2-3 working days depending on your location.

A quick question for those already landed please

What is usually the requirement to rent an apartment to a newly landed immigrant without a job

1. If the person has no proof of income will they rent the house to him

2. will it be required to have a guarantor?
Re: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by 9jaAlien: 1:54pm On Mar 14, 2018
I am looking forward to this experience you are yet to share with us, as I have always looked forward to every one of your experiences. I see your posts as much more realistic and the norm, while I see others testimonials, though welcome and pleasant, as more of an exception than the norm in the life of a 9jaAlien. Please do not be discouraged to share by some comments, one person's meat will always be another's poison, I am sure I am not the only one on this thread that is following your experiences. I really wish we could be more tolerant of each other, learn to ignore what we don't want.

I would also like to request for tips on survival jobs whilst seeking our dream job, to minimise the rate of POF depletion and ensure we do not come back on this thread like one poster crying for help. What kind of jobs and skill-set do we need to survive so that if it is possible to learn it in Nigeria before emigrating, e.g. driving for Uber, hairdressing, cooking, etc.

We need to be more humane. That said. In a shortwhile i will share one of my experience.
