House,

Kindly assist in appreciating team Zeestone for the successful completion of my 6000kW capacity solar system project. The level of professionalism and trust exhibited was unprecedented from the purchase of all the material, transportation and installation. Thanks for the good commendations from the guys here especially GeorgeD and Niyi who gave me a high level of comfort to stake with them.

Gracias!

Hello here.

Ideas are needed on the preference for battery set up for an inverter meant to power a 195litres thermocool deep freezer (I honestly can't figure out the wattage consumption). A 12volt setup or 24volt set up?

Personally and from a non-professional viewpoint and understanding, I will prefer a 12volt set up to avoid the problems of having to replace both batteries even when it is one of the batteries that go bad. A 12volt, higher amperage set up will definitely last longer but with lower financial implications when the battery bank needs to be replaced since you will only have to deal with one battery set in parallel rather than in series.

Also what is the minimum inverter capacity that you will recommend? I have spares of pure sine wave 1000va and 750va lying around. Will any of these suffice?

Professional opinions please.
Thank you.

Sorry, I didn't request for that. I guess you mistook someone's else enquiry for mine. My questions are detailed above about sizing for a solar inverter set up for 195litres Thermocool deep freezer.

I actually have energy meters and timers as part of my collection. I have them in 12 volts and 220volts options.

Please if you have some ideas regarding my questions, chip in. Thanks.

I wasn't responding to your request. I didn't even quote you.

I was just advertising my programmable timers on this open, lovely forum.

Sorry you mistook my advert for a response to your questions.

Personally, I'll recommend the higher voltage setup as it will allow you to deal with more manageable currents, reduce the cost of your cabling and fuses, reduce fire risks, and allow you to more easily upgrade your setup in future.

12V very inefficient . . .
24V middle mark
48V efficient
96V very efficient but not ergonomical
120V superb but too much wahala and very expensive

and the list goes on , . . the choice is yours to make . . btw . . .

none of those inverters would handle the freezer's start-up (surge) current . . .

Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by NiyiOmoIyunade(m): 7:05pm On Mar 13, 2018
From my own experience a 195L freezer is not so large or power hungry. See attached below a name plate picture of a larger size size 219L Thermocool freezer with rated output at 140w.

I would cap your freezer at below 200w rated wattage but you can either check the nameplate or plug one of your watt meters and observe the running watts.

A solid 1000w inverter should be able to handle this freezer as the only load - choosing to go with a 12v setup will help you keep your battery bank balanced easier but you will also be operating at the bottom of the efficiency curve for charging and DC to AC conversion. I am sure you will be using more than one 12v battery whether you go the 12v batteries in parallel or do 12v in series to make 24v or 48v all can work if properly managed but I will be the first to admit 12v parallel will keep your battery bank balanced by default vs other voltages where you may need to put more effort to battery balancing.

Comprehensive. Thanks.

I intend to use a single 200ah battery simply because i do not intend to run the freezer beyond the sun-hours, 4pm; 5pm maybe. I want to wager on the top performance of the freezer to still keep frozen items intact till the following morning. A programmable timer will do the on-off switching. I initially thought i could use the dusk-dawn switch feature on one of the few charge controllers I have but i figure out that may only work for the operation of a direct 12volt DC appliance, not for the inverter that may not have battery recovery voltage feature to restart itself.

However in case i decide to go with two 200ah batteries parallel set up, would you say that a 30amp PWM CC with 450 watts (three parallel 150watts) suffice?

I know the 30A CC will max on 360watts solar input but I'm just trying to push my luck with 450watts.
