The Pride Of The East: The Coal City. by mosaic77: 9:29am On Mar 16, 2018
SUMMARY:

Enugu suffered heavy bombardment during the civil war, but in 2014 the Coal city became the first city in Nigeria to be named in the Top 100 Most Resilient Cities In The World, out of 350 global cities that applied for consideration.

What more do you know about this city? Find out more from below.

The History

There are a lot of beautiful cities in Nigeria, but only few can match the Coal City in beauty and majesty.

Yes, the Coal City is the pet name of Enugu City. Enugu is neither a boring nor dirty city, it is just a city sitting majestically on top of coal. It is the Pride of the East.

It might not be as ancient as Benin City, but it has weathered through a lot of storms to become the first city in Nigeria to be recognised in the Top 100 most Resilient Cities in the World by the Rockefeller Foundation.

Enugu exudes a lifestyle that is summed up in a way of life known as 042. This is the popular cliché for the Coal City. It is one that conjures strong emotions in the mind of Ndi Igbo.

042 is the telephone code for the city of Enugu. Though this might just be a number, to Ndi Igbo, it is a fashionable reference to the cool, calm, collected lifestyle and bubbling nightlife that is unique only to the Coal City.

Enugu was founded on a hilltop where it derives its name enu ugwu. Since the 17th century, the area known as Enugu has been inhabited by the Nike People. In 1903, Enugu had its first contact with the Europeans. This happened when the British geologist Albert Kitson led an exploration in search of solid minerals.

Just 14 after its first contact with the Europeans, Enugu officially acquired township status.

The Records

Though sitting majestically on top of a hill already, the Coal City can never be separated from the Milken hill. This famous hill was named after Engineer Milken. He was the Head Engineer that designed the road that led to the coal mine at the foot of the Milken hill. This 4.8km road holds the record as the first tarred road to the Coal City.

Coal was first discovered in Nigeria in Enugu 1909 by Albert Kitson when he was prospecting for silver. In 1914 the first shipment of coal was made to the UK.

From the first shipment to the discovery of oil, Enugu was not just a major source of revenue to the government but was also strategic to the British interests.

The industrial revolution in Nigeria could be attributed to the discovery of coal in Enugu.

Enugu sits at about 223 feet above sea level. It is approximately a 3-hour drive at 80Kmh from its nearest Seaport in Port Harcourt, 1-hour drive from the largest market in West Africa and about 2 hours drive from Aba.

Enugu is the only city in Nigeria to serve as a capital city for 7 times. It is only closely followed by Ibadan which served as the capital of the defunct Western religion and is presently the capital of Oyo State.

But for Enugu, from serving as the capital of the Southern Provinces, it became the capital of the Eastern Region (now divided into nine States), then the capital of Republic of Biafra, thereafter, the capital of East Central State, Anambra State, (old) Enugu State, and now the capital of the present Enugu State through a process of state creation and diffusion of administrative authority.

The Recognitions

The Coal City is the home of the famous Enugu Rangers Football club. This is the most successful professional football club in Nigeria. Though it shares that status with Enyimba F.C, for now, it is the only one that has never gone to relegation.

Enugu suffered heavy bombardment during the war. In spite of this, in 2014 it became the first city in Nigeria to be named in the Top 100 most resilient cities in the world. Enugu made the list of the 35 cities that were selected out of the 350 global cities that applied. It made this list in the same year with Barcelona, Spain; Paris, France; London, England and Athens of Greece. This means just like the other 35 cities, Enugu is now a model for global cities seeking to build their own resilience.

The Coal City is very serene and has a unique lifestyle. As a result of this, many people believe it is the best place to raise kids in Nigeria.

Do you believe this? Anyway, don’t forget to Share!

What Enugu achieved after the war, no other city in this country will dare that.
