A 'humane prison' is set to open next year in Greenland, as an answer to the country's lack of resources for more dangerous criminals.

Ny Anstalt is located in Nuuk, the capital of the country, and is set to open in 2019.

It is the product of a competition for a contract to design a new prison.

The theory behind humane prisons is that inmates staying in more civilised prisons will not be as isolated or institutionalized when they return to society.

The penitentiary has 76 cells of 130 square feet, with 40 of them closed for more dangerous prisoners and 36 open.





Inmates with privileges will be able to go into the city to work and make money, but will have to travel back to their cells in the evening.

The 86,000 square feet project was built as an answer to Greenland's lack of closed prisons, which resulted in more dangerous inmates being sent to Herstedvester, in Denmark.


This resulted in a language barrier between the guards in Denmark who generally do not speak Greenlandic and the inmates transported to the Danish prison.



Within this Greenlandic prison are communal areas for prisoners to socialise in, and a sports centre, library and church.

One feature of the prison is the use of glass on arrival, prisoners will be able to see into the buildings in an attempt to make it less traumatic.



Lead design architect Thomas Ruus Christensen said of Ny Anstalt: 'You can't escape the prison because it's surrounded by a big wall, but you can look at the view and escape in your mind and that's important.



He adds that the prison's layout, which is on three levels, means that amount ofinmates in one area can be controlled, and inmates can be kept separate if needs be.'


The guards don't need to carry weapons, and can develop better relationships with the prisoners, which is essential to the concept of rehabilitation.'

My question is..


Why are there no private prisons in Nigeria?

Why can't the federal government negotiate with the private sector to manage its prisons or better still enter a deal with the private sector to build private prisons then the fed govt pays for its operations.

ok noted but all I am trying to point out that prisons should be a place to psychologically correct inmates so when they finish their term, they can go back into the society as refined people rather than them going back worse than they came in.

I tell you.. My brother its just over crowded and its unhygienic. If I have money in this Nigeria, one thing I will do is to partner with the fed govt to manage its prisons.

Well-said. One would expect our churches and mosques, especially, to consider this sort of partnership. Churches, especially, do not merely need to go on evangelism to the prisons and feed them with spiritual food, they need to contribute toward improving the state of our prisons. The states of our prisons are just simply abysmal.

With the situation of this country
If they offer most Nigerians the "opportunity' to live here

You are wrong. There is no correlation between a developed economy and crime rates.

Developed economies like the United States, Britain and France have more crime rates than Nigeria.
