5 Common Signs Of A Failing Car Fuel Pump by autojosh: 6:31am On Mar 17, 2018
Fuel pump problem is one of the most frustrating car faults your car can give you. The work of this fuel pump is to pump fuel from the fuel tank of your car to the engine where it is needed.

When the fuel pump malfunctions, there will be problem in the way your car behaves. Just like when there is not proper blood circulation in the body.

This post is to bring to the notice of various car owners symptoms that they should be aware of about a malfunctioning fuel pump. When you notice these symptoms, proper preventive measures should be taken before the situation gets worst.

This fuel pump is an essential component of internal combustion engine. When the fuel pump starts malfunctioning, it either delivers too much or little fuel from the gas tank to the engine.

The two main purpose of this fuel pump is to pump fuel from the gas tank to the fuel injector or carburetor and then to create the proper amount of pressure to ensure that the right amount of fuel will be delivered to the engine, regardless of external conditions.

Below are the symptoms of a failing fuel pump:

1. Your car jerks especially at high speed:
It might be a sign of a failing fuel pump when you notice your car jerk at high speed. This problem comes up because the fuel pump can't deliver smooth flow of fuel to the engine, hence the jerking. This interruption causes the engine to skip several power strokes.

This jerking effect might last for some minutes and then return to normal

2. Your car lose power when accelerating:
Your fuel pump may be in trouble when you notice your car often loses power when you try to accelerate. In accelerating, more fuel is required which forces the pump to work a little bit harder. If the fuel pump is failing, it won't be able to deliver. It will just starve your engine of the fuel it needs.
In essence, if your car is very reluctant when you try to accelerate from a stop, know something is wrong.

3. Your car starts losing power while driving uphill or towing a load:
When the fuel pump start failing, certain driving activities like climbing uphill seems to be tug of war. You start having that feeling of your car struggling to take 50 bags of cement uphill; whereas, it's not carrying anything.

4. Your engine starts surging:
You may find your car suddenly accelerating even when you did not depress the gas pedal of your car.

5. Your car won't start:
This is the final bus-stop of a failing fuel pump. This is the end result you get after ignore other warning signs of a failing fuel pump. When there is no life in the fuel pump, it can never again supply fuel to the engine. Imagine what happens when there is no flow of blood from the body to the heart. That's what will happen to your car.

To be sure it's fuel pump, check your car’s fuse box; a blown fuel pump fuse is another reliable symptom of a failed pump.

If in any way you start noticing all these symptoms, have your car checked.
It's good you know that there are other car faults that can bring about these symptoms. So make sure you have your car checked by the right people.

i've been driving with a malfunctioning fuel gauge (the indicator on the dashboard) for over two years and as such can't really tell my fuel level. This implies that my car sometimes stop abruptly while on transit. what might be the after effects of this.? It's a Toyota 4runner. I've worked on it more than twice but it still hasn't been rectified. What's the cost of a new pump for a 4runner

My fuel gauge is also bad from purchase.. Wish to know if it can cause early damage to my fuel pump too.. My own observations are whenever I turn at a bend or on motion.. I experience sudden drag and after applying pressure on the gas pedal, the engine comes on again.. Pls all the fuss about

fuel pump is more about the engine strength and not the car brand 1.8L, or 2.0L or 3.0L
your car should be a 2.0L engine 4 plugs ?
the fuel pump will be around 5k in ladipo or ojuelegba but be careful and get it tested before paying oooo

Pls I need help, my eod 2004, has been giving me some issues over a year now, while driving mostly when am driving slow maybe traffic or bad road, the gear goes off, i will have to off the car, and start it, before it picks, at first was sure the gear has gone bad, but I noticed when my mechanic tunes the steaming down to slightly below 1, it never occurs, but when the steaming is high thats when it occurs. My question is this, is my gear faulty? Or is there something else responsible for this, i have had this problem for over a year now.

Thanks for this piece, it's so timely. My car exhibits all of these symptoms and I had the mechanic check it yesterday. He confirmed it's the fuel pump but said to change it 6,000 while there is another for 4,500 but he advised I get the 6,000 for durability. It's Toyota Corolla 2004 model, please help authenticate the price before I go ahead and pay him. Thanks.

This is n interesting read.

I need you help please. My car (2007 Toyota Corolla) does not exhibit any of the symptoms disclosed in the post however, I have a hard cold restart on the car. When ever I start on a cold engine, the car delays in starting. I only succeed to start after the 3 cranks.

The check light is not on and it does not read any code. I was advised to change my fuel pump. Do you think the fuel pump may be the culprit?

Thanks

Someone should help me out here, I met this dude online and he showed me a car Toyota Camry 2000 and that the car is going for 300k. Just that the only problem is the AC. That it needs to be refilled.

Some questions I need answered by my professionals here

1)How much does a AC Camry cost
2)is there any possibility that I am going to be scammed. Because the dude sounded so genuine

The car is in Ogun State meanwhile I told him I was at Lagos. (Am abt Edo)He even insisted I come for inspection. I no wan waste money and time

Is the proposed seller saying that the A.C compressor, evaporator, condenser, pipes needs to be changed before the A.C is fully restored? Purchasing all of them plus refrigerants and labour wouldn't cost more than 100k.

The market value for that vehicle, Nigerian used is not less than 750k (going by car listings on Cheki ).

The market value for the engine(Belgium) is around 120k to 140k depending on the grade and supplier.

Based on the above facts, we advise you not to waste your time and money.
