Ok guys. So today is the first time I ever did enjoy driving my car since I got it in November 2017! I want to say a Huge ‘Thank you’ to all the contributors on Nairaland who give quality advice on Car Matters. I have silently been reading, reviewing and correlating different contributions and these have helped me in recognizing anomalies that could be present in a car.

Ikenna always talks about Lions, lol (Peugeot)! Mine is just a Kitty Cat! How do I know? This is because, today we helped him to become calm . . . Now he purrs very nicely, instead of the previous distressed roaring (when he is not a Lion).

I drive a 2009 Corolla (US Spec). When I got it, I didn’t know the ride’s radiator fan was connected directly (that is, they by-passed the fan control module). Every time I start the vehicle, the engine would roar to life, and keep roaring (I diagnosed and got error codes saying “timing is over-advanced”). Of cos it was over advance! Unlike non-sensor cars that you could just adjust the throttle cable, tinker here and there to get the right setting, I didn’t want anyone tinkering here and there on my Corolla, lol. I asked mechanics for explanation towards possible solution till I got tired. Then I encountered Nairaland contributors (Worldwide famous cc Gazzuzz, cc Ikenna, and many other popular resourceful contributors). I learned here that by-passing the ‘fan control module’ is not a good thing to do (Meanwhile, 96.888888888% of our mechanics (As you guys funnily call them “Kazeems”, lol) believe they are saving the world when they advise motorists to trash thermostat and connect fan directly!) That direct connection had been my problem all along! At car start, my engine always struggles to attain optimum temperature for efficient performance, but the constantly running fan won’t let it! In order to counteract the fan, the engine would trigger an advanced timing in order to get the engine to heat up and attain optimum temperature. This in turn caused my car to roar, guzzle fuel and make me feel dissatisfied overall.

Today, I decided I would get a good electrician to revert the status quo. Guys, the eleco who came highly recommended turned out to be a KAZEEM! He started with the whole ‘As your fan be, na the best. Naija temperature too hot!’ I tried to get him to see reason, but he argued on behalf of Africa! Two other people I met were stuck on the same false argument. Eventually, I got one to do my wish . . . And Voila, Advanced Timing is no more!

Thanks so much guys, I really appreciate you guys. And please, there’s got to be a way that the sea of unqualified mechanics can be salvaged, on behalf of the unsuspecting Nigerian car owners. Maybe, if mechanic associations exists, group training can be given on workings of recent cars! Just saying.

Reverted my Sienna 2007 to factory connection and the drop in fuel consumption was obvious.

I congratulate you and appreciate your good sense of judgment.
The problem is we are too close minded as a society, there is this belief that since it's 'worked' so long for people around then it's gonna keep working, and most car users are scared to take risks. Please ensure to use coolant in your car.
The mechanics are just too stubborn and will never hear anything different. I believe they even tell themselves to remove thermostat in their associations.
Don't be surprised of you interview the person who revered the connection did so just because he needs money and sees you as stubborn, so he wants you to learn your lesson the hard way.
Congrats and stay safe sir.

I remember trying to reinstall thermostat and revert fan setting about 4yrs ago on my brother's Honda accord 95, nothing the mechanic and electrician no tell me, the thing I told them was, "na my car, do wetin I tell you, if e overheat na my wahala". Till today the car runs smoothly and hasn't overheated ever since.

Similar thing happened when I bought my babyboy almost 2yrs ago, this time I didn't have to say much before it will reversed to factory setting

Glad to see you have found the light, I had mine reverted many, many moons ago and much like you I had to go through like 4 mechanics before I got one that begrugingly rewired it. I really wonder why most mechanics defend shallow beliefs so dogmatically. Frankly, I find it quite frightening grin

Op if your car has a thermostat (which i believe it does). It will take the same amount of time to get the engine at its optimum temp regardless on whether fan is on all the time or when needed. Reason is simple. Thermostat only opens to allow cool water at a particular temp and will open and close when coolant is hot and cold so the disadvantage of running your fan directly is increased wear and tear of fan engines and maybe a slight rise in engine performance to accommodate fan running always

Hello Namzy. You see you mentioned "slight rise in engine performance". From my post, I mentioned exactly that, except that I don't know what you would consider 'slight rise'. My engine was over advanced! Even when driving, at 80 km/h, my Rev-meter would be at 3000 Revs/min shocked! This is not slight rise Bro. My engine is waaaay-quieter now, and I have peace. Peace be unto you to bro, wink.

My experience since I returned connection to factory settings is this:
1. Without AC, fan doesn't come on. During driving, fan comes on intermittently.

2. With AC, fan stays on.

That's just how the car behaves now. Please experts in the house. I hope that how it's supposed to be though.

I used my toyota Sienna for 2years with the thermostat after i bought it as tokunbo, then i started experiencing over heating, my rewire bypassed it and have been using it like that for past 2years. Does it mean the thermostat is bad and needs replacement or what is the best solution. I will need my car to also work at its best performance because the most time i enjoyed the car was that first 2 years..

I need your support the autoguru in the house
