Almost every university worth it's salt have Scientists and Technologists who have one patent or the other.
Some of the researches were actually carried out and funded by their student but hijacked by their Professors and lecturers who are aspiring to be professors.

The problem is not acquiring patents everywhere, the issue is Commercialization of the patented products that is where ALL universities in nigeria have failed.

Here in Aussie, universities have a relationship with companies who help to fund research and then commercialize the products.

A biotech companiy is currently funding universities in a bid to produce pills that will possibly elongate the lives of humans by adding another 50 years of life by fighting aging at the cellular level and eliminating tissue damage and 'scarring'.
Now imagine how much potential billions that could bring for the company when research is completed.

Covenant University Receives Patents For Integrated Dual Automobile Engine and 7 other products

Six researchers at Covenant University have been granted patent rights for 8 products, with the Head, Product Development Cluster, Professor James Omoleye, being a sole recipient of one of the patent rights and a co-recipient of 4 others
Professor Omoleye, a Professor of Chemical Engineering, was the sole beneficiary of the patent for the ‘Production of wine Brand from Hibiscus Sabdariffa’. He and Dr. (Mrs) Modupe Ojewumi, a faculty in the Department of Chemical Engineering, were joint recipients of the patent right for the ‘Production of Protein Nutrient from Parkia Biglobosa Seed’.

The patent right for ‘Integrated Dual Powered Electric Automobile Engine’ was awarded to Professor Omoleye and Mr. Olusegun Igbamerun, a Senior Technologist at the Covenant University Centre for Research, Innovation, and Discovery (CUCRID). Both were also jointly awarded the patent right for the invention of ‘Violation Self Reporting Vehicle Speed Limiter’.

Also, together with Mr. Ifeanyichukwu Ekem, Professor Omoleye earned a patent right for the ‘Production of Dry Fermented Ogi from Corn and Guinea Corn’.

Professor Francis Idachaba of the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering (EIE) was awarded patent rights for two products. They are ‘Pipeline Leak Inhibitor Tool for Onshore and Offshore Crude Oil Pipeline networks’ and ‘Offshore Pipeline Monitoring Tool’. Another faculty from the EIE Department, Dr. Victor Matthews, received a patent right for the invention of an ‘Intelligent Executive Chair’.

The National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP), an Agency of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology, facilitated the award of patent rights to the Covenant University researchers. NOTAP, amongst other functions, promotes innovation, patenting and intellectual property; offers technology advisory and support services; and commercialisation of Research and Development results.

Oil and gas is here to stay for a very very very very long time, it doesn't mean research in other areas won't progress as man itself is just an adventurous being.

But there is more to how the world economy is designed.

A classic example is in the case of nuclear power where you have the uranium and thorium.
Thorium is more safer than uranium, more abundant in nature and produces more energy than uranium but please explain to me why thorium is not being used instead of uranium

Once you understand that there is a world order that dictates affairs of the world you will understand well.

Presently around the world, oil fields are been explored further by the same people doing the solar research (TOTAL is at the front end of solar power) but same TOTAL brought egina FPSO to produce their crude from your father's land. You just need to wake up

Yes, thorium is thrice as abundant as uranium in nature, but you are overlooking a very important fact, economically harvestable thorium is about the same amount as uranium, so that means industrially they even out in abundance. except you are streamlining your source to seawater where uranium is actually way more abundant than thorium, we all have sea water, so thorium is less appealing when it comes to extractable abundance.

Even if thorium were actually more harvestable, it still wouldnt have been in use, this is because unlike Uranium, Thorium doesnt produce plutonium which is essential for making nuclear warheads. You remember nuclear research started as a military escapade with a sole interest for making bombs and killing ourselves. So that was how Uranium got picked over thorium and the entire nuclear technology ended up revolving around it. The nuclear industry is a very conservative industry where folks are not so willing to try out what they have less experience with. Moreso, thorium isnt ideal for some reactors , it is more lethal than uranium in the short tem, and harder to prepare as a nuclear fuel.

Though one would expect that these days that it has become necessary to differentiate a civil nuclear project from a military one, research would shift to thorium so countries could be mandated to use thorium rather than uranium for their energy needs, thereby saving us from the deceit.

i dont see a world order having anything to do with it, yes there has been conspiracy theories of fossil fuel majors having something to do with the lack of interest in thorium but we all are too eager to forget that it is cost prohibitive to convert a commercial uranium reactor to thorium. already china is aggressively researching thorium for its future nuclear plants, so there may be a shift in the future.

I agree petrol engines would be around for longer than we think, especially due to its versatility and safety. electric cars and green energy may lead to a huge surge in demand of petroluem but virtually all the products used in manufacturing are by products of petoleum. Oil is not going anywhere soon, we may only cut down on our carbon footprint.

But the guy you replied has a very good point, investors wouldnt want to bother themselves with commercializing Ogi especially if the money maths doesnt add up, and i dont think it would since everyone makes it already.

If we were to be counting patents and rights by so many researchers in other (public) schools we would not leave here today.

The reason why you see their naming topping Webometrics rankings of universities in Nigeria. They are everywhere on the internet showcasing their acheivements.

Other schools should learn from this.
