What Automated Machines, Robots Are Doing To Us – Nigerian Workers by Tuteebrain: 12:27pm On Mar 29, 2018
Nigerian workers under the auspices of National Union of Food, Beverages and Tobacco Employees, NUFBTE, has raised the alarm that automated machines and robots are increasingly taking over the jobs of members across the country, worsening the employment crisis in the country.

The union, which said it has already petitioned the Federal Government through the Minister of Labour and Employment over the matter, warned that if the trend is left unchecked, more Nigerians may be thrown into the unemployment market.

President of the union, Lateef Oyelekan, said the present drive by the multinationals operating in Nigeria to use robots instead of human beings, would soon boomerang as it would further increase the unemployment figure in the country.

According to him,
“Nigeria is not mature enough for automated machine or robots to be used in our local industry instead of people. Presently, we have the challenge of unemployment in our hands where half of the population of our youths are unemployed. We are insisting that it would further increase the unemployment problem in the country and more Nigerians will lose their jobs. This is because where 200 Nigerians are supposed to be working, with automated machine, we now have 30, and where 500 were working before, we have less than 50.”

The union, which called on the Federal Government to prevail on the companies already using robots to stop, argued that,
“countries with employment problems in the world are not using robots. If a country like China that manufactures robots is not using them, India is not using robots, even in our continent here, Ghana and Kenya are not using robots, why should Nigeria allow it then?”

Oyelekan also said though the directive by President Muhammadu Buhari that jobs Nigerians can do should not be given to expatriates, was commendable, he insisted that the government must urgently make a pronouncement on the robots issue.

“This is how Nigeria can develop. We commend Mr. President for that because in some companies, we have expatriates as line managers, sales managers, what does such a person know about our culture, our market and other socio-cultural values of our people?,”
President of the union asked.

Rubbish........why should I pay a worker N40000 monthly when a robot can do that same job at N10000. It's either workers agree to do work at the same price of robots or they leave.

Those that are protesting, ask them, if they were owners of companies and had a choice between using robots at N50 per unit output and humans at N200 let unit output, which will they choose? The former of course. They will be talking as if they won't do same if they were in the company's position, Rubbish...

The paradigm is shifting. Africa need to learn how to flow with the tides of advancing technologies. Let's learn how to make the best out of automation rather than negate it. Yes, it could lead to job loss but then we can't stop the tides.

That is why you should learn indispensable skills
Programming is a perfect example, its one of the things robots won't take over...No matter how advance they become .
Yes I know there is A.I that can write code, but a programmer/programmers are still needed to write code.

I am presently conducting a research that would help us better understand the concept of a robot workforce.

This is a huge lie .

China uses robots but they also make sure a lot of the work is carried out by humans.

Please look for the YouTube link on motherboards made in China.

Buisness isn't to make profit alone but contribute to the host nation. If you can't create job then the government will be willing to frustrate you.

Are you also willing to pay huge tax for using robots when there are available man power?

Nigeria has been frustrating businesses since 1960 , how far have we gone with that?

not entirely true, we have machines that write codes for other machines, so in the future programming is also going to be automated with minimal input from humans.

if huge taxes are placed on robots, then robots will b more experience than man power...... so to earn more profit, I will naturally go for manpower. It's about going for the cheaper alternative.

The Union and the workers are wasting their time. They ( can not) do not even have convincing arguments on why robots usage should be discontinued

I stated that in my post
Yes I know there is A.I that can write code, but a programmer/programmers are still needed to write code.
No matter what, programmers and software engineers are inevitable. They would always be needed....
You think humans would just leave AI alone to keep writing codes, without some sort of human intervention ? Ah , no na .Na apocalypse we dey take play be that.
Technology jobs can never go extinct, just like medicine, I have fears teaching might go extint one day, but it won't , it would just be transformed , very soon the whole world would be taking classes at home, with Virtual reality and all that.....Who would build all these ?, Electrical Engineers(Which I studied thankfully) and programmers(Which I just had to learn, because I love being creative).Programming makes you a demi god , you can create anything you can imagine .

This is why it’s being preached all the time. ACQUIRE SKILLS! Self improvement is the best gift you can give yourself. While you work in the factory, acquire skills that will elevate you. Why take us backwards?

What are they crying to government for? You see the problem? Nigerians want the country to improve but fight advancement when it affects them.

Good one. They should also create jobs or try own a company.

As another poster said Nigerians must learn how to code, build A.I. systems and robots or we will be left behind..

No business will refuse to save money via robots if it can use them. Lack of jobs is down to bad leadership and government in Nigeria..
