It baffles me the way some of these learned governors behave, I am sure he benefitted from free education, of a truth some people does not deserve to rule. Shame on you Rotimi Akeredolu. As you are toiling with the future of these students, may the future of your children be tossed about like a coin, may your reign not know peace and above all, tears flowing like a river will always be yours except you reverse the increment, amen |

At the end of the day, the Government will reduce the fee to #100,000 which was the original plan. |

Adekdammy:1.Akeredolu benefited from free education at a time when the number of students in school was far less than what it is now (in 1979...there were 80000 university students, whereas there are more than 3million students now). 2.Plus, students in universites paid tuition fees by the way back then. 3.Can you adequately fund a school on just fees of less than $100 a year? ie 25000 naira? Even the N137000 is just about $381. Meanwhile in 2013....the previous govt told ASUU that the N3 trillion in extra funding agreed in 2009 was not possible anymore. Hence the fees increase. 4.Am sure you that is complaining will gladly pay $22000 or more to do postgrad course in US or Europe. 5.And by the way, I am not supporting APC, nor do I back PDP. I however am for facing reality. And the reality is...either the federal government takes N3trillion at least to fund UNIVERSITES (from a budget of N8trillion)....or we take another loan, or we increase fees. 6.This is the time for things like grants, scholarships, student loans, etc. |

elprince09:As much as I know that Akeredolu is a failure, I still won't pick Mimiko over him cos they are not different. Road projects shouldn't be celebrated. Did he reduce the unemployment rate? No. Did he establish any industry? No. How did he affect the private sector positively? A man that was comfortable owing workers in his state for 6 month should never be celebrated. If we keep celebrating road construction, street light and Co then it will take us hundreds of years to reach where the developed countries are today. We are way behind! |

| Re: Akeredolu Hires Pro-govt Students To Counter Protests Over AAUA Tuition Hike by Nobody: 8:22am On Apr 12, 2018 |
HigherEd:Correct. I would add that fee rises were inevitable when Jonathan told ASUU the truth in 2013...that govt could not give universites N3trillion naira in extra funding. It was a harsh but unfortunate truth...meaning fee rises were promptly a matter of time. We have to face reality. I myself hate it that poor students are going to suffer...I REALLY REALLY HATE IT. God knows...in my old university we used to pay N2000 back then AND EVEN THEN some guys could not afford it....and as for facilties...we did not have adequate facilties, and the hostels...which we paid N90 for were a mess. ABU's VC recently said that his overhead costs for the unviersity (which includes two campuses, and several other institutions) cost N50million a month....and what he got from the govt for overheads was N120million a year. Tell me , how are unviersites going to keep on surving.? Is it by taking another loan from Maman IMF again? And if care is not taken...the children of the rich are going to port to private unis, and overseas...get better education, and come and be chasing the poor kids from poorly funded unviersites off the job market. |

HigherEd:As much as i agree with your reasoning.......... Govt is still to be blamed, if they really want to get it done properly they can do it.... even with their "claim" low finance. There was a time university education was free in this country...... U may want to argue that population is few! Remember there was no cash as much as we hv now. Govt can provide what we need if they are sincere and not corrupt. We hv the cash and resources! |

lekahm:1.University education was never free in this country. At all. 2.It is going to cost N3 trillion per annum at least to keep fees low. This is according to the 2009 FG-ASUU agreement. Our budget this year was N8trillion. 3.Corruption NEEDS TO GO...but we still need to raise fees. Sorry...but reality must be faced. Or we take another IMF/WORLD BANK loan.... |

I beg to differ with your analysis sir. You forgot to add fees students pay per annum to the list. Let's say the students pay 40k per annum and assuming the total number is students in ABU is 30k, which I believe is way more than that. 40k X 30k = 1.2billion naira. This is the least ABU would make per annum. 50million Naira overhead cost per month is 600million per annum, which is small compared to what they make from Students fees in a year. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Cromcruach91: |

HigherEd:Goan sit down bros...Akeredolu is a useless man He has crippled virtually all Mimiko put in place before leaving, with no single project to show for it Free delivery for pregnant women is now 25k,50k for surgery...no more payments of WAEC for secondary school students, over 500% increase in AAUA school fees, still owing salaries, the whole of Akoko still has no road, government secondary school fees now is more or less the same as private school fees...infact,alot is happening Akeredolu is so clueless and useless! |

HigherEd:Lagos state university pays 25000 as s hook fees since 2015 ,and the school is progressing building infrastructures and is now ranked the best state university in Nigeria, better than most federal universities .Its all about priority and focus, why oppress the poor because you want to raise the standard of education. |

Acidosis:They will keep succeeding as long as students don't put a united front. I was in Lasu when the proposal to increase school fees happened I participated in protests was even arrested even though I could have pretended that it was none of my business u was already in my final year. Bit because students didn't show a united front, not before long, divide and conquer set in and now what do we have? What is the state of industry in Ondo state that an average parent would be expected to cough out 180k to pay tuition? I understand you have a point of view though. but the soldier ants, the termites individually are weak but together they achieved alot. |

Sharmeenator:Overhead is not the only cost you know... Facilties need upgrading. More staff need to be trained More facilites need to be built....training, accomodation, etc And some of the unviversity's companies need funding too. Cost: way beyond 1.2billion. You see the problem. Overhead takes care of things like light and water bills. It costs 300000 per annum to train one university student in Nigeria...(ASUU/FG Agreement document 2009). |

AK481:Is your tax half your salary...because that is what happens in germany and denmark...education is free....in return for half your salary in taxes. Nigerian taxes are0-24% of your income...plus if your monthly income is less than N50000 you don't pay taxes. |

The governors are hiking school fees, yet there is No quality education. But come to think of it, are governors never tired of stealing? All this hike is for their stealing to go high, is not that they care if the children are having quality studies. What is this dirty bearded man still doing in Ondo state? |

HigherEd:education - is a fundamental right... and in today's highly technological society - citizens need to be educated. so the stands of increasing school fees will diminish the idea of a sophisticated society and increase inequality to a large extent. government should cut cost on most of her nonviable project(her big cabinet for instance) for now and sacrifice that large chunk of her wealth on education if she want a progressive nation . education is an investment which yield fantastic reward . the higher the government school fees, the lesser the enrollment of brilliant student (especially those from less privilege home). i do not buy the idea of leaving out first class standard to private universities only, however i encourage her to support government mission to ensure education is both affordable and accessible . variety of educational opportunities brings competitiveness but with very robust and adaptable system. The standard of a quality public universities should not be determined by public pulse rather it should be taken as the basic right of a country aspiring to be prosperous. A semi developed country like ours is in a very disadvantage stage and therefore needs robust education to cover the gap she is missing, if Kuwait and Qatar can avoid free basic education to PHD LEVEL without taxing their citizens, what is stopping us. we are both oil producing state. well, you may want to argue they have less population? you should also note that we have a bigger GDP. In my own opinion, education should be Free or cost very less except for private universities which shouild also offer a very Fair market value. I believe it is in the interest of every facet of society; economic, cultural, corporate, military, government, and what all else to ensure that the next generation is smarter than the last. Expensive tuition fees will not do us any good.it will rather create a mess i remember when Governor okorocha announced that the state is offering free tuition to every indigine of imo state who will enroll in the state institution and as well as scholarship for brilliant mind. it was a thing of joy to me and this as someway push imo state in education sector above many many states in Nigeria . |

HigherEd:I think the public uni system has been derailed by corruption. Given the fact that Government cant pay for all locals seeking admission, The right direction is to make them go through a selection process but this selection process has been corrupted such that the rich and greedy folks who don't make the cut use bribery of few hundred thousands to penetrate the system and leave some poorer but smarter folks at home longer than they are suppose to. It is cheaper to bribe 250k into a public uni and have govt pay about N1.2M over four years than go to a private uni where they pay N500k/yr. |

vaxx:1.It is ok to talk about rights....when you have the money to fund such rights. 2.According to ASUU/FG agreement, it costs N300000 to train one student in a Nigerian university as at 2009. This was factored into the N3 trillion that was promised in the same agreement...which GEJ told ASUU was not possible in 2013... 3.Sokoto can afford to declare education free because it does not have that many students in university to fund. Once the population of students increases, states become very selective in how many students they fund. 4.And yes...Okorocha is offering free education. How much is he offering to spend in upgrading the state institutions to standards equal to that seen in US, or Europe ? (Zero). The cold reality is that unless you can find N3trillion per annum from the budget and spend it on universites sans corruption...fees have to go up....or we keep on taking loans. |

Cromcruach91:Education is a human right and not a privilege. when you monetized it, it becomes privileged. A human right is a right that is given to anyone, no matter their personality, gender, ethnicity , color, religion, language and so on. A human right can’t be given or taken away from anyone. ''Human rights are the foundation for freedom, justice and peace in any given society''. A nations like ours is still staggering in most of the facet of life because we have less educated society. Nigeria government expense is one of the most wasteful in the world, ex governor peter obi gave a speech as of 2016 on how state government incur wasteful expenditure(things that are not viable)The total amount came to a remarkable N1.3 trillion in one year. and likewise Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the cash recoveries made between May 29, 2015, and May 25, 2016, including recoveries under interim forfeiture (cash and assets), amounted to over N3. 4 trillion. However, Nigerians are yet to see the effect of these funds. If these monies are truly within the coffers of the government, then these funds should be deployed towards developing the country. this same lai also said that $9 billion is been held by the governments in frozen accounts. where are these money? you should note my information is two years old , apart from the money recover in 2017. At least we all can see the benefit of free education in imo state . imo is doing well as compare to other state in education sector. if sokoto plans ahead , the policy will continue. sokoto state can initiate a tracking system where the graduate of the benefit of the free education policy can reimbursed back into the state pulse. my opinion though. my current university have something of such to keep her scholarship program intact. the former beneficial of the scholarship program are still the one funding the current scholarship. |

vaxx:And we still need N3trillion to make sure fees stay low annually. Just let that sink in.Our budget is N8trillion. Yes, corruption needs to go, waste needs to go...but beyond that we need 3 trillion every year. to keep fees low. That is where the problem is. Combatting waste will just make things slightly better, but it won't solve the main problem. |
