Baru passed this instruction few hours after an NNPC station was shut down in Abuja by the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) for selling petrol at N181 per litre.

The Group Managing Director, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Maikanti Baru has asked Nigerians not to buy petrol above the government-approved price of N145 per litre.
Baru passed this instruction few hours after an NNPC station was shut down in Abuja by the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) for selling petrol at N181 per litre.

Baru added that some oil marketers are cheating on the public, though they are carrying NNPC logo.

Baru spoke on the sidelines of the induction of the Founder/Group Managing Director, Arco Group Plc, Alfred Okoigun, as an honorary member of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering (NAE) in Lagos.

He said the NNPC has sanitized the supply and distribution of petroleum in the country.

"We have brought back sanity in the fuel supply system. We have over 2.1 billion litres of petrol in-tank at the moment and people should be calm and be sure that the right quantity is given to them at the filling station at N145 per litre that the government has approved to be the sale price of PMS.”

He added that Okoigin is a remarkable entrepreneur and that his service to the market is important. Also, he guaranteed indigenous companies of the corporation’s support.

He said “What it takes to run the economy is to have entrepreneurs who are ready to bring innovations to the market. The Nigerian market will have a lot to benefit by bringing to the market the various inventions. The fact that they are going to set up manufacturing plants and equipment and produce these inventions to be used locally will have a multiplying effect.”

Okoigun said the fellowship award would aid him to give more support to the engineering profession. “This is an encouragement for me. It is a challenge that I should do more and it also represents the excellent work that Arco is doing.”

According to the president, NAE, Mrs. Joana Maduka, the academy is putting all efforts to increase investors/inventors’ rapport.

Look...NNPC , Government , and Nigerians should stop decieving themselves.

1.We don't have the capacity to manufacture/refine enough fuel for domestic consumption in this country...so we have to import. Result=higher prices.

2.We are not earning enough forex to subsidize fuel, and to import enough for our domestic needs, and to keep current refininf production running. Result=higher prices.

3.Think Dangote and all the small new refineries will save us? Think again! Dangote and co are businessmen, not charity workers. And when their refineries come on stream...they have to MAKE PROFIT...to pay for the new refinereis, and also to pay workers, pay workers, and build that new mansion in Switzerland. Result= HIGHER PRICES...

4.The only way for us Nigerians is to face reality....and allow marketers to sell fuel at the price they want to sell.

Yes...petrol is going to cost N300 per liter...and lots of poor people are going to suffer (especially those with side chicks, but what do i know)

Once they do that...the prices will eventually come down via competiton, and also FOREIGN INVESTMENT will flow into the downstream sector, meaning NEW facilities, NEW jobs and NEW sauces of kudi.

EVENTUALLY....prices will crash drastically. Not immediately, but they will

It happened with GSM...(in 2003...my pater bought a sim at N10000 now it is N500).

We better wake up. The poverty myth is keeping us from developing.

What a useless directive.

You expect people to sit and wait for the pump price to drop or drive around on an empty tank looking for the right price?

What has reduced when fuel is N145? Fuel was N87 under Gej. Maybe you don't know what is true reduction.

With which money, dear boy?

Where is the cash to subsidze the fuel to N87 per liter.

That is what GEJ tried to tell you people in 2012....when he increased prices from N65 to N140...that the subsidy cash was running out...and we won't be able to keep it up. You jokers protested...and GEJ brought it back partially....reducing it to N97...but by 2013...N97 was only applicable in Lagos and Abuja..because forcing marketers to sell at that price made them sell at a loss. And it was a big part of the reason why we could not save much under GEJ's regime...we were throwing money down a bottomless pit in the name of subsidy.

If Buhari lsitens to you and forces the price of fuel back to N97....it would be a big economic mistake. Essentilaly, all petrol markleters would be losing as much as N30-100 per liter of fuel sold...which would be a disaster. Jobs would be lost...and the only source of fuel would be the black market.

Face facts....Bubu may be a bad economist...but criticising him for refusing to tell people how to sell their wares in the market place? Hmm...you need to go and reread your economics, son.

No it isn't...it is even way too low.(It costs N170 to import one liter of fuel right now!)

And even IF we refined all our petrol at home...all the owners of the refineries must MAKE A PROFIT...and forcing them to sell fuel to marketers at low prices in the name of subsidy is economic disaster in the making.

Allow the marketers to sell fuel at the price they want to sell...and eventually competition and foriegn investment will crash prices at the pump. Simple.

Fuel prices at Minna in 2014 was N170, in the SE was N200 and above, and in Zaria was as high as N180.
It was only in Lagos, Abuja and some major marketers that you could get fuel for N97 per liter...and that after queueing for long hours.
You obviously don't own a car.
And no, I am not defending Bubu....I think that if GEJ had been allowed tokeep fuel at N140 in 2012...things would have been much better price wise.

OK....try to get government to force food sellers to sell rice at N5000....you would say it is flawed economcis.

So, why are you trying to force guys who import fuel at N170 per liter to sell it at N145...loss of N25 per liter?

And right now..we don't have the cash to subsidise fuel until oil reaches $140 per barrel (not in our times!)

Best solution...marketers sell fuel at their price, and eventually competition does its work, and brings prices down. And we even get new JOBS!
