Other than degree, what is the difference between the ignorant and superstitious killing an innocent owl because they mistake it for a "witch", and a gullible fanatic killing his own mother because some self-appointed "prophet" has blamed her "witchcraft" as the source of all the young man's problems? What is the difference between all of the preceding and Islamic fanatics in Borno State massacring innocent villagers in the name of God?

As much as various groups of Nigerians like to point to others as impressionable zealots without an iota of common sense, this same absurd, irrational worldview is shared in common by at least 95% of the population, all of whom are far more concerned with "spirits", "witches", "destinies", "angels" and other such intangible nonsense than they are with thinking rationally about practical means of solving their societal problems. Even just looking at this forum, ridiculous religious threads get far more traction than any to do with science, technology, engineering or any of the things that have actually made human life better over the last 500 years, just as tribal threads inevitably overshadow sensible discussions about economics and politics. Few Nigerians would know what a rational post-Enlightenment worldview was like if it bit them in the a**, but the same irrational hordes somehow expect all the material benefits of that worldview to accrue to them by praying to (or committing atrocities on behalf of) invisible entities none of them have ever seen or heard other than in dreams or states of intoxication.
