A French appeals court has upheld a ruling denying an Algerian woman citizenship after she refused to shake the hand of a senior official.

The woman, who has not been named, said her "religious beliefs" prevented her from shaking the hand of the male official in the citizenship ceremony.

A government ruling said it showed she was "not assimilated into the French community" and denied her citizenship.

She appealed, but France's highest administrative court upheld the ruling.

The Algerian woman has been married to a French man since 2010.

At her 2016 citizenship ceremony in the south-eastern Isère region, around Grenoble, she refused to shake hands with the presiding senior official or a local politician.

In Islamic teaching, handshakes between unrelated men and women are usually prohibited.

The government then denied her naturalisation, saying she was "not assimilated" for avoiding the symbolic ritual.

This is one of the reasons the state can deny citizenship to the spouse of a national under the country's civil code.

The Algerian woman called the decision an "abuse of power", but the Council of State has upheld the ruling.

France's court of last appeal said the government has not "improperly applied" the law.

In 2016, a Swiss regional authority ruled that two Muslim pupils at a Swiss school had to shake hands with their female teacher, or face a fine.

Their previous exemption from the tradition had caused outrage in the country.

Extremist. Good for her. Those of them here who don't shake are bitter extremists.Their main reason for not shaking is not religious, but a hidden hatred for people who are of a different faith. The same constitution that permitted you to practice Islam is same constitution that mandated the hand shake as part of the ceremony.

It is like a man who allows you. into his home on friendly terms then you get there and try overriding his own way of life with yours.

Muslims should learn to realize that the constitution gave them room to practice in the first place and this Islam isn't the first religion but one forced upon their forefathers.

I wonder why some Muslims want citizenship of some "infidel" countries. Why can't they just enjoy themselves among themselves?

They exploit all the advantages that are available in liberal Western societies and yet they don't make Muslim societies conducive for non-Muslims. Till today, Christians, Buddhists , Jews and other religions cannot practice their religion freely in Saudi.

The religion is very intolerant. I will rather be in the Quranic Hell than be a Muslim.

I agree. If she wants to be French, she should assimilate. It is not compulsory, so she shouldn't be desperate too.

These fanatics sef. What's so difficult in shaking someone for a few moments? They think they'll goto hell if they do it? You want French citizenship but cannot behave like the Frenchman. Such a pity! It's like those terrorists who complain of the policies of the US and UK towards them yet they still want to go there.

The irony is that many of these fanatics are simply hypocrites.
