That was how these Firs people forced my friend from SA to shut down his business, everyday different bills. Some of them were even telling him how much he's making as if they were the ones patronizing him, the truth is in that shithole called Nigeria the rich would never want to see the poor survive. Am not against paying tax though, but why accusing the woman that she had a turnover of N18M . Na dem dey chop the food. Mtcheew.

The only thing I will advice businesses to do is submit your company's tax returns on a timely basis. Maybe some Nigerian company/ business accounting expert in the house should talk us through the legal duties of a Nigerian company Director.

Re: Restaurateur Cries Out After Being Confronted With Bills Worth Millions By FIRS by benfluleck:
I can relate with this post as I have an uncle who owns a hotel and is about to shut it down, unfortunately, a lot of you commenting do not own businesses that is why you are making assumptions.

You can pay your tax every month of the year, that doesn't stop FIRS or LIRS coming up with their own figures after their inspection (yes they come and inspect businesses). So people who are not in the know let me tell you who you have to contend with if you want to attempt to start a business in hospitality.

I can't give exact figures but this is some of the figurea we have to contend with

Local Government - 500,000 a year for an entertainment license, road, water
FIRS - 500,000 approx
LIRS - 500,000 approx
Environmental and Health - Levy - 550,000
Lawma - 220,000
Lassa - (I can't remember)
NEPA - 12M a year: The light is terrible but what can you do.
Disel - 8.6 M a year
Tourism - (can't remember this amount
Land Use - (definitely over a million)

All of these agencies will come uninvited for their inspection and all will threaten to close down your business. All of these agencies are justified in a reputable environment however they never use concrete figures but will use arbitrary figures based on assumptions of how well they think you should be doing.

An example:
They told my uncle he was owing about 4Million for Payee. However when we checked their calculations we found the figures we gave them for our payments had been doctored, In their figures, it showed we had multiple cleaners earning about 5Million naira a month (for a hotel in Nigeria how huh). We are still contesting this figure.

Where is the profit going to come from look at the NEPA bill

Paying taxes, rates, bills etc is not often the problem of the majority but getting commensurate value, on time and with predictable regularity undecided

Chai, entrepreneurs are suffering untold hardships in Nigeria, startups/SME's are worse off, yet the Senate, the executive and the military find times for all their catch-a-mouse-&-let-it-go anti-corruption & Alaba Mkt Prison Break games, it's sad.

Seeing how a private business is run has been an eye opener for me.
I work for a new establishment in ilorin and I am always aghast at the number of so called government officials we see monthly.
They are like ants trying to swallow up the nascent business.
From them demanding payment for water bills despite non existent water pipeline to our facility
To those demanding extra payment because our billboard has adverts on both faces
To ministries that couldn't get their shit together sending different personnels]to us every other month despite having resolved their issue the priviuos months

And then when I see the cost of power in running the place, I question the managers sanity in leaving the comfort of his blissful life abroad instead of coming to this hellhole. The sunk cost for power is mind boggling. He had to have solar, inverter, and the old bastards nepa just to get by.
From its inception, the establishment just barely breaks even.

This country is a mess
This country has gone to the dogs

Walahi if I own a business, maa da si rough fun won ni.
What has the govt ever done for me.
My brother, they're like sand. imagine even the electronics in the office, there are agencies for it.. we have to pay 15k quarterly for using electronics in the office.
environmental would come, water would come, NEPA would come, firs would come... can't remember all of them. I was like how much exactly do they think one is making? it's annoying. sometimes I'm force to fight them I swear

It's just sad that these small businesses are squeezed dry and the dangote's of Nigeria get massive tax breaks

eezeribe:
A Government that cannot provide steady power supply, good roads and security for its citizens should not be thinking of collecting tax...
Taxes that are wasted by politicians to fund their extravagant lifestyleshuh
I know that big investors like Donald Trump have a way of evading taxes by doctoring their annual reports and frustrating external auditors;but the small and medium scale entrepreneurs don't have these shenanigans at their disposal. The best thing for them is to form strong unions that would be assaulting these tax officers whenever they come to their premises and if possible, burn down their offices until we begin to see the evidence of our tax payments.

Our wonderful Port Harcourt! First of all, it pays to get a prepaid meter. I use N2500 worth of unit every month. I don't doubt the 75k nepa bill. My neighbor is a fashion designer without AC, they brought bill of 63000 last month for him. Port Harcourt is an expensive place to do biz, i feel her pain.

My advice to anyone in business or proposing the idea. The most important thing to know after how to produce is how to manage your tax affairs.
It can easily render you bankrupt and worse in prison

I am convinced that they do this deliberately so that the business owner will be forced to 'settle' the matter unofficially. Maybe your friend was paying the correct amount of taxes without any 'extras'. The FIRS officers hate that even more than somebody who does not pay any taxes at all. They will show you who 'know book' pass if you insist on paying the correct taxes. If you like, carry ICAN president go there.

Forget that nonsense and focus on the issue. These FIRS and other arbitrary levies by sundry other government agencies did not start from president Buhari's inauguration. They will not end when he leaves. Buhari is not the reason your beans got burnt.

I hope one day, Tithe payers will cry out collectively just like these ones....

Often times we ve tried to Sensitize them about how the govt officials spend the taxpayers money frivolously.....

But their (taxpayers) "I don't care" mentality made all our advice fall on deaf ears!!!

Now they are feeling the heat!!!

As much as I frown at multiple taxation, one should also frown at the average Nigerian's aversion to paying taxes.

The tax collection rate is about 4% of GDP which should be around the worst 10 in the world.

Businessmen and the self employed are not conscious they have to pay both company and income taxes.

It is important that tax rates are business friendly and are streamlined. Also important that the company tax rate is reduced from the ridiculous 32% (if you include education tax) to nothing more than 15%.

If the government is serious about collecting taxes, it should also ensure the economy is booming as this will boost revenues to be taxed.

A tattered economy will leave the government with battered tax collection figures

Being a Nigerian is an automatic ticket to heaven, cuz one can't go to hell twice.. in fact there's more rest of mind in hell than in Nigeria.

if I leave this country ehn? nothing go make me even fly by hm airspace talkless of coming back. I die where I go. cuz I believe God sef Don comot him hand for Nigeria matter.
