Y0ruba:Hahaha. Yoruba that is synonymous with weakness that you compare to mighty Benin. If Oyo or Yoruba is strong why then is Yoruba always regarded as WEAK? It’s a trait you guys possess. On the other hand Benin is synonymous with strength and might. You call Oyo an empire but yet it’s influence was only towards its western side. An empire should spread in all directions. Benin’s influence spread to North (Igalas), East(Igboland), West (Yorubaland up to Togo).. that is a true empire. Lastly how come all notable historical African heroes who resisted imperial whiteman are from Benin kingdom (Niger-Delta) but Yoruba as big and strong like u claim couldn’t resist.. Please Yoruba you guys shud continue to hug your weakness and leave Edo alone. |

Moneywomen17:Igodo was the first....but Obagodo was also another name for Igodo. So the nation was named after Obagodo or Igodo as Igodomigodo. |

Y0ruba:We are not shooting down his works, he is our son and we are proud of him. Yes he made some errors and no one is above it, what we are saying is that, because his work was the first work written by an Edo person concerning the Edo nation, that doesn't mean it should be the judge of all other subsequent works written by other edo historians. It doesn't mean it discredits the work of others. Everything Egharevba said is the ultimate truth and no other truth can be discovered. I know most of the things i know today because i am a voracious reader of historical works. I love history so much, especially ancient history. I read things online, in libaries both owned by schools and persons. I don't tend to throw the works of people away because it doesn't make me feel good. I read it all, soak it in and make my decisions. I might not be an eloquent scholar like you are, that's because i base in the sciences but i know for sure, when it comes to the history of my people, i can talk about it and to me, it is an achievement. It was nice having this discussion with you. I learned alot, thanks for your citations and references. |

davidnazee:You seem knowledgeable but there was no need for the insults I for one, a Yoruba man, view Benin kingdom with a lot of pride. I have a respect for what our fathers accomplished there I do pray people move around this country more. And out of the county also A clannish supremacist mindset is not the best way to live. I for one am proudly a Yoruba son, but I am also proud of Benin kingdom, as a black man I can appreciate our collective heritage. Why can’t you do same ? |

davidnazee:Your words attempt to make me disappointed and ashamed of my ancestry but it failed because the Yoruba culture has so much good in it that I am proud of Your words will also not make me hateful to Benin kingdom, A civilization I’m equally proud of. I will take solace in the fact that you are not the spokeperson of Edo people and there might be progressive people from Benin who also admire my civilization and culture The people on this thread are well read progressive minds, we should be linking up to share, build, create and prosper, not tear eachother down with insults and abuses |

davidnazee:Good thing that it appears that dude seems to have taken a walk. He was just promoting falsehoods painted from the Yoruba side of the equation with dubious references. The Chinese tell their own stories, likewise the English, the Japanese and all the others. The Yoruba are telling their stories even though its filled with lies and all manner of revisions, its still Thiers to tell. Bit not for them to now want to tell Edo stories by themselves, that's bull. The Edos would tell their stories themselves based on thier own perspectives and whether the Yoruba like it or not, that's how it would be. |

Y0ruba:am glad u decided to stop arguing. U argue with facts and reference why the other people argue baselessly and there is a say a foolish person will always beat u at being foolish. For any person who wants to learn objectively the information u provided will be on your side so kudos. One guy even said that nupe conquer oyo for 100 years and it was Benin that free oyo or that Fulani still conquer us till today with no facts whatsoever to back his claim so that should give u an idea of the intelligence of the people u have been arguing with I also realize this too late but once I did I back out immediately too. OBA OF BENIN PUTS THE RECORD STRAIGHT AGAIN!!! Tribune - Nigeria's Most Informative Newspaper When Oba of Benin visited Ooni of Ife When Oba of Benin visited Ooni of Ife By on May 1, 2018 It has been 36 years since an Oba from Benin visited the Ooni. Tunde Busari, Oluwole Ige and Paul Omorogbe cover the various aspects and the significance of Oba Ewuare II’s visit to the Ooni of Ife. Oba no dey go transfer,” is a Pidgin English saying popular among people in the Edo/Delta region. It simply alludes to the fact that Obas of Benin rarely leave their palaces where they preside over the day-to-day running of the Benin Kingdom. Indeed, it is on record that 37 years have gone by since an oba of Benin paid left his palace to pay a visit to a traditional ruler. Therefore, the news of Omo N’oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Oba Ewuare II’s impending visit to the Southwest caused ripples among all concerned in the region. How the Oba was received Traditionally, the oba will not just travel to any place directly. He will be met by a regent in that area who will accompany him into the place. On this occasion, it was Chief Godwin Edobor, Obazuhwen of Benin Kingdom and the representative of the Oba of Benin in the Southwest, who was the man for the job. He led a contingent of cultural dancers, the Bini Community in Oyo State to meet the Bini Community in Ile-Ife to await the oba’s arrival. Chief Edobor told Nigerian Tribune, “It is my duty as the representative of the Oba of Benin in this region to receive the oba first, and lead him to the Ooni of Ife’s palace and to see the governor.” The waiting spot was at Roundabout Bus Stop, Ondo Road, Ile-Ife. There was singing, dancing and merriment from a cultural troupe, with various socio-cultural groups like the Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Edo and Delta Development Corporation (BRACED), Edo United, Ile Ife, among others were present. Mr Aifuwa Igiehon, President of the Bini Community in Oyo State speaking on the significance of the oba’s visit to the Ooni said, “He is coming to meet his brother. There is a strong relationship between Ife and Benin; it is very important. Apart from the cultural and historical relationship, it is important they meet and share ideas to bring progress.” The Oba of Benin and his entourage soon arrived, in a convoy of no less than 50 vehicles, comprising jet black SUVs, saloon cars, buses, and the oba’s iconic white Rolls Royce in the midst. “This is more than a governor’s convoy,” one observer remarked. Oba Ewuare’s entourage, numbering not less than 200 persons, comprised of the oba’s siblings, his daughter, Princess Osayuwamen Ewuare, royal courtiers and body guards, and palace chiefs. The entourage also included dance and theatre troupes, along with the palace drummers. The Visit to Ooni The atmosphere all the way from that point to the palace was electrified, and residents were out on the streets to behold the spectacle of the epic visit. Excitement over the Oba’s visit was heightened because it coincided with the Olokun festival which had been on for a week. If there was a time to see the fullness of Yoruba tradition ‘from the source’ on display, it was on this day. Apart from the captivating cultural displays by Oba Ewuare’s troupe, consisting of royal princes and princesses, including traditional payment of obeisance by Isoros of Ife, the duo of Oba of Benin and Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi (Ojaja II) confirmed the historical record of Oranmiyan, the last son of Oduduwa, who migrated from Ile-Ife about 1, 184 years ago to become the first Oba of Benin. Findings by the Nigerian Tribune indicated that before the advent of Oranmiyan, traditional heads that governed Edo or Benin natives were referred to as “Ogiso”, the title said to be derived from the description Ogie n ‘oriso (meaning King in Heaven) which evolved from the wisdom and knowledge of managing the local affairs of the people. But, Oba Ewuare, who arrived the palace of his host, located at Ile Oodua, Ile-Ife around 1.23 pm on Saturday with his large retinue of aides was received by his host, as the two foremost traditional rulers entered the private residence of the Ooni for discussion. Oba Ewuare was received by Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, along with a retinue of traditional rulers. Prominent among them was the Orangun of Ila, Oba Abdulwahab Adedotun, among other important rulers from in around Ile-Ife, including Ekiti. The richness of the cultures of the Yoruba people of Ile-Ife, and the Edo people of Benin were in full display at this occasion. The Edo State Arts Council Dance Troupe, and Inneh Theatre Troupe from Benin, made presentations. From Ife, Ijala, Arike Ade, Osirigi, Alagbon, Elewo, Ogunde National Group among others made presentations to the delight of the jam-packed audience in the hall. In his speech at Ooni’s palace, Oba Ewuare had this to say, “We are indeed appreciative of all the commendations and the remarks you said, moreso the support and working together so that our kingdoms will get closer and closer. “I want to say it gives me great pleasure to visit His Imperial Majesty today in countinuation of my nationwide thank you call to traditional rulers, and other eminent personalities that graced my coronation on October 20, 2016, which by the divine grace of God is also my birthday. This visit has long been planned but due traditional and other palace engagements in Benin, it is coming at this time. My post-coronation thank-you tour commenced with a visit last year to President Buhari and the Sultan of Sokoto. I thank God for making this visit possible. “This visit is to appreciate Your Imperial Majesty for the honour done to me and the entire people of Benin with your personal presence at my coronation. This visit should provide us the opportunity to re-awaken the cordial relationship between our two kingdoms which seemed to have unfortunately hitherto cooled off since my father’s visit to Ile Ife in the reign of Oba Sijuade, for reasons I am not too sure of. It is my prayer that this visit of mine will restart the cordial relationship which, because of the historical affinity, should exist between our two kingdoms. We should explore and tap into what unites us rather than what divides us, for the advancement of our cultural heritage and socio-economic development. “It is gratifying to note that you and I have already been in regular communication even before this visit. We must increase visits to each other because such will augur well for the desirable close relationship between our two kingdoms.” He used the occasion to highlight “three major issues of national concern. They are the persistent herdsmen/farmers clashes, human trafficking, and the socio-economic under-development of the country.” He said there was a “dire need to improve on the security architecture of the country” mentioning porous borders as part of the issue. While commending President Buhari on tackling the issue of insurgency in the Northeast, I want to on behalf of all traditional rulers in Edo State, join al traditional rulers in Nigeria, appeal to the President to as a matter of urgency intervene in these other threats to the unity of our country.” Having introduced members of the royal family on his entourage that included his bother Prince Aghatise Erediuawa who is Executive Director of NDIC, Princes Ehiose and Omoregbe Erediuawa and his daughter, Princess Osayuwamen Ewuare,Oba Ewuare II also personally introduced one Chief Oliha. He said, “Those of you that know the history know that the then Oliha came to Ife to ask that Oranmiyan be brought to Benin. There are details in history books. I am cutting out the details. It’s all in the history books and you can research that. He (the then Oliha) was the one that successfully won the right to escort Oranmiyan to Benin to become the first oba of Benin.” He mentioned the creation of a foundation called the Oba Ewuare II Foundation to help tackle the menace of human trafficking, noting that the issue was not peculiar to Edo State alone. He said Oba Ewuare II Foundation would work with the House of Oduduwa Foundation in Ife for the betterment of the people. In his response, the Ooni of Ile Ife, responding said, “It is a great joy and honour to have you in Ife today. We are very excited. The excitement has been in the air since the 24th of this month, Because we are so inter-related. We have common ancestry, we are so linked by virtue of blood, and our two kingdoms have a common ancestral history. I am very happy for the warmth and love you have extended to the kingdom of Ife. On behalf of the house of Oduduwa, we are very honoured for you to be in our midst today. He said that but for time,“We had a lot planned for today. We wanted to take you to the place of our common ancestral background where Oranmiyan still rests till date. Because he is still alive in our midst. All we need to do is propitiate the spirits of ancestors, and he will hear us READ FULL GIST HERE.... http://www.tribuneonlineng.com/amp/when-oba-of-benin-visited-ooni-of-ife |

Olu317:Your kind of people are the reason why the last Oba basically severed relations with Ife because of deliberate distorters like yourself. They say one thing, you come out to quote a different thing entirely. What you are here busy contending is post oduduwa interaction between both groups and that isn't even an issue in itself. What isn't in contention is pre oduduwa Bini society, and that is what we are telling you Yorubas to keep away from. |

If you arent sure , Oba Ewuare II affirmed it on his coronation day ,that Oba was imported word to Edo land from Yoruba land . It is not contestable....As simple as ABC. |

Olu317:Please where did Oba Ewuare say oba is an imported word from Yoruba land? He only said Oranmiyan was brought to Benin to become the first Oba. Was Yoruba using Oba for their rulers at that time?? Also Oba Ewuare said “Those of you that know the history know that the then Oliha came to Ife to ask that Oranmiyan be brought to Benin. There are details in history books. I am cutting out the details. It’s all in the history books and you can research that” Our Oba showed great wisdom and grace by not going into details else he would have made his hosts look foolish. Unlike Yoruba that busy themselves with untrue stories of our pasts Obas head brought to Ife, showing pictures of dilapidated building as burial place of obas of Benin. I even wonder why the Yoruba elders brought that story up at the meeting. Stories that have no substance and not true. Foolishness!! |

odigbosky:Obviously you fall within the category of people that claim what they have no knowledge. I reaffirm so that it sink deep to your head; I am Oranmiyan's descendant,so stop this unproven assertion that belong to only the LIARS from Edo. We descended not from Edoland and stop this emotional astute because it is all fallacy after the Edo beneficiary want to take a glory that belongs to Yorubas. Heterogenous People that struggled with her neighbours during ancient era that lost few places they try to manoeuvre with total Area; 17,802 km² (6,873 sq mi). And If divided with the four major ethnic groups; namely Edo (Binis), Esan, Owan and Etsako. How many landmass would Edo–Aka–Udu –Igodomigodo control? It means Edo–Bini will control 1718.25 sq mi.. Why I am the 40th Oba of Benin Kingdom? History also reminds us of the importance of the present time which is the only opportunity we have to take the different and too often fragmented components of our collective past to prepare the foundation for a unifying and collective future. A long line of succession of kings in the Kingdom known as Benin, started in the 12th century by modern recording. There may be some different views about the origin of some of our ancestors, but there is unanimity in the shared heritage between the people of Benin and lle lfe in identifying Oduduwa as a forebear of kingship in many kingdoms in some part of Africa and the part called Nigeria today. Historians all agreed that Oduduwa sent his son Oromiyan at the request of elders of Benin to return to them as ruler of their realm. Oromiyan staying in Benin may have been short, but before he left, a child was born to him, who was later crowned Oba and he is known today as Eweka the 1st. ; Oromiyan’s time in Benin, however short-lived, he was an Oba and so he was the first OBA after the Ogiso dynasty came to an end. Oranmiyan was the first Oba in Bini...As simple as ABC. N.B: Better keep off on Yoruba issue as regard Odua or Oranyan and kindly go to romance section or other sections to showcase your talent that suit personality as yours! ![]() |

@davidnazee Your side argument with Olu apart, Yorubas have been using "Oba" for as long as Ife has existed. It was used by the previous leaders Oduduwa conquered In contrast to Bini that used "Ogie-so" before the first Oba came |
| Re: Oba Of Benin Visits Ooni Of Ife by davidnazee: 1:44pm On May 03, 2018 |
Olu317:The place you said had huts and uncivilized was regarded as the most advanced and developed of all ancient African cities/states.. more developed and advanced than Ife which was the only Yoruba state existing at that time. Moreover you cannot deny that Great Benin kingdom conquered and ruled all Yorubalands east of Ife, shaped and installed your monarchy. Benin influence is still felt and seen in those territories till today. |
| Re: Oba Of Benin Visits Ooni Of Ife by davidnazee: 1:48pm On May 03, 2018 |
OlaoChi:That is your opinion. Nobody can say what is true or not because there is no evidence of it. It’s all lost in myths now. But what is an everlasting truth, witnessed and felt and documented is that Great Benin Kingdom once ruled over vast part of Yorubalands and people. Yorubas should swallow their pride and acknowledge that.. it was all in the past, nothing to be ashamed of. |
| Re: Oba Of Benin Visits Ooni Of Ife by davidnazee: 1:51pm On May 03, 2018 |
Olu317:Wether Benin was a small piece of land doesn’t change the fact that Benin kingdom conquered and ruled your tribe (Yoruba). Soon your Oni will acknowledge that truth. |
