Australia's oldest scientist, wearing a top labelled 'ageing disgracefully', has left the country for Switzerland to end his life at the age of 104, saying he is resentful that he must go overseas to die.

British-born David Goodall does not have a terminal illness but on the grounds that his quality of life has deteriorated he secured a fast-track appointment with assisted dying agency Life Circle in Basel, Switzerland.

He got on a plane in Perth late Wednesday surrounded by friends and family saying their final goodbyes, including a heartfelt farewell from his grandson, euthanasia advocates told AFP.

Assisted suicide is illegal in most countries around the world and was banned in Australia until the state of Victoria became the first to legalise it last year.

In a recent interview, Dr Goodall said he had the full support of his family in his wish to end his life, and hoped others would also understand.'I am 104 years old so I haven't got much time left anyway,' he told theABC.'I might as well not have it (my health) getting worse and worse, making me unhappy as it goes.'

Exit International, which helped Goodall make the trip, said it was unjust thatone of Australia's 'oldest and most prominent citizens should be forced to travel to the other side of the world to die with dignity'.

It launched a GoFundMe campaign to get plane tickets for Goodall and his helper upgraded to business class from economy and quickly raised more than Aus$20,000 (US$15,000).

I choose to ignore all yee trolls who mentioned me with unpalatable comments.

Euthanasia no matter who legalized it is a crime against God. This grandpa didn't create the life he's about to terminate and he's therefore bound to attract God's judgement and indignation.

It's cowardly and smacks of dignity to say the least.

This makes me so emotional. Life is just so shocking! It just dishes whatever it pleases to us all. Imagine one fighting to end it while another is fighting to keep it.

Dearest Lord, please give me the grace to WANT to keep living. Let me not lose the people/things that make me happy. It is well.

I pray daily for a world where we all will appreciate the sanctity of human life, a gift to be treasured above all.

I pray that even the aged may learn that life itself is a gift, whether it is in sickness, indifference or health and even a dying man so far he is alive is of powerful potential.

His children and grandchildren do not love him at all. If he is receiving lots of love from his children and grandchildren, he wouldn't want to leave them or cause them any grieve.
They call us shithole, but we Africans are the best. Even at an age of 150 years we never wanna die...

Heartwarming - not heartbreaking.

I am most assuredly pro-euthanasia. Maybe even pro-suicide. It doesn't only have to be about depression - but so what if it is? I say it is considerate and the ultimate expression of free will. It is doubly cathartic and the sum of all romantic endings. It is dignity.
