The person you quoted is being factual but you are being politically sentimental. In this democracy of ours, worse has happened. legislators do not have immunity, they can be sent to jail while in office when they are found wanting. It happened to Facrook Lawan during GEJ. It is unfortunate that you guys worry about issues that affect the elites more than they worry about issues that affect you the masses. Many innocent people are awaiting trial, many are dying in jail, many are being killed by police and soldiers; have you heard the senators crying over it.

For once, let them feel what extrajudicial really means. Let one of them suffer what the poor people are suffering. Democracy has always been threatened since Aristotle and the system still exist.

My advice for you is to sit down and sip your chilled kunu while the drama unfolds. When they are done, you can clap and analyse with your friends. It gives you more peace of mind

This has been our problem all along! There seems to be a set of laws for commoners while the priviledged Elite class are governed by a completely different laws.

In civilised climes, the law is no respecter of persons. Have you really thought of the fact that our political elites are half of the reason crime and criminality escalated to the point it is today?

So if truly Dino is involved in the supposed jailbreak, he shouldn't be tried because he is a senator?

What rule of law?

Do senator's enjoy immunity or what are you saying?

The allegations against Dino are weighty and many a Nigerian has endured the same justice system.

Dino is no better than other Nigerians that have been there.

EdificationBoss:
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara, has urged the police to prioritize the health and safety of Sen. Dino Melaye before prosecution.

Dogara made the call at the plenary on Thursday in Abuja after a personal explanation was raised by Rep. Sunday Karimi (Kogi-PDP) drawing the attention of the House to Dino’s plight.

The senator is currently facing a seven-count charge of criminal conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearms in Kogi State.

The helmsman of the green chambers, however, said that anyone who committed any offence must face the law.

The speaker said he had not seen any country where anybody had been arraigned in court on stretchers.

“I have not seen in any country where someone is arraigned in court on stretchers when he or she is not fit to plead guilty or not guilty.

“If anything happens to him, (Dino) the responsibility will be on the security agency,” he said.

Earlier, speaking under personal explanation, Karimi said in the process of arresting and transporting Dino from Abuja to Lokoja by the police, the lawmaker was involved in an accident and was hospitalised.

Karimi said that he counted no fewer than 36 policemen guarding the hospital where Dino was receiving treatment.

He said Dino, who had yet to fully recover, was being tried while still on stretcher.

According to him, Dino is being persecuted for his political believe and what is happening to him can happen to any of us.

“I appeal to the house to look at the issue and make sure due process is followed,” he said. (NAN)

Throwback:
How many people have died in police custody, yet the House or Senate never did anything about it? How many have died in prisons while awaiting trial or judgment?

Why is it that only the political class of Nigeria are citizens with rights and privileges, while the ordinary tax paying Nigerian does not even have his fundamental human rights respected by the organs of government?

Let Dino Melaye go to Prison while on trial, as a fact finding mission, and use that firsthand experience to promote civilized laws in the national assembly, for the good of all Nigerians that will have any encounter with the police, the courts and the prisons.

Or why is it so hard for our political leaders to realise that Nigerians are being treated as victims in their own country? Why is it so hard for Dogora or Saraki or Buhari to demand that a certain John Doe who has died extra judiciously in police custody or even in illegal military custody, is an aberration that must never be tolerated in a democratic republic?

The day government leaders would care about the rights of the unknown Nigerian, that is the day the country will work for all such that Dogora would not need to remind the police of the rights of a notable politician.
You have raised a very good point, but if the police go ahead to kill Dino, trust me, it will only get worse for the common and unknown man out there.

Mr Speaker, are you speaking from the point of the constitution or from your perspective bland loyalty to your gang of thieves.
Legislators are not respected because of any exceptional or honourable behaviour but by virtue of being in the hallow chamber. It is good the criminals among them are treated as such no matter their state of health.

Throwback:
An injury to a serving senator is not the test of the efficacy of our democracy.

Rather, an injury to the unknown yet responsible Nigerian citizen is the test of our democracy's efficacy.

Have our political and government leaders cared to make this democracy work for the regular Nigerian citizen who have become victims while the leaders are the only citizens in the setup?

A serving senator being a public servant, should be treated as the ordinary Nigerian is treated by the police like a criminal despite no conviction, humiliated daily in civilian public by the military, treated as a statistic by the courts who remand and adjourn without regard to humanity, and easily lynched by the barbaric mob who have embraced their status of not having rights.

The day the ordinary Nigerian is treated well in a republic and a democracy, an accused senator can also hope to be treated as well as the Nigerian citizen.

The day the ordinary Nigerian enjoys the rights already duly accorded by the constitution, then will our democracy not be under attack.

If an accused senator feels under attack, let his cult of fellow selfish and uncaring lawmakers make laws for the benefit of all Nigerians who daily experience such attacks.

Our democracy would be better because all enjoy rights, and not because a senator already accorded the courtesies not afforded the proletariat, attempts to extend such rights as being above the law after suspicion of involvement in breaking the law.
God bless u
