The House of Representatives voted to have a bill granting male workers in the country paternity leave thrown out, The Cable reports.

The bill, if passed, would have given fathers in both the private and public sector the option to take paternity leave.

During its second reading on Thursday, Edward Pwajok, a lawmaker from Plateau State argued for the bill, stating that a father’s share poof parenting has increased. He said:

As father’s share of parenting is on the increase, they experience similar challenges with women, such as their jobs and family duties clashing.

Making provision for maternity leave without provision for maternity leave is discriminatory against men.

Another lawmaker Nkem Uzoma-Abonta from Abia State, also said he was for the bill.

Most of the lawmakers, however, described it as unnecessary, with Kingsley Chinda from Rivers stating that it should be thrown out. He said:

What is the spirit behind the labour law? I think that this bill should be thrown out.

It seems these people who calls themselves senates don’t know their duties and responsibilities. Failed country. Their mates are busy putting standard law and orders in other countries while they fill their pot belly with public funds.

Why won't they allow men have paternity leave? To think we got more men there and can't seem to understand the joy of fatherhood or being home to support the wife is rubbish.Gender equality indeed.

this have impact on the number of women that will gain employment
Re: Lawmakers Vote Against Giving Fathers Paternity Leave by drkay(m): 12:30pm On May 04, 2018
This is a lose lose for women really because responsible men will be deprived of the privilege to render paternal assistance to their nursing wives thereby exposing the mothers to stress. In addition, most employers will prefer to employ men to avoid maternity leave.

In a society that is working, this shouldn't be an issue.
I remember when my boy came, I was in Romania and I was asked how I was going to use my Paternity and Parental leave. I told them we had nothing of such for men in Nigeria, they were surprised because in Romania, aside the 15 working days the father of a child has to stay at home after birth, he still can alternate with his wife if they choose to take Parental leave of 24 months. Under their law, within that 2 years, whoever chooses to take the parental leave will receive 85% from the mean of their net income within 12 months prior, but the amount cannot be less than RON1,063.00 (which is about N98,000.00). So, if the man likes, he can take 2 months off while his wife works and when he returns to work, the wife will continue to stay at home. The amount stated above is subject to some conditions which is no big deal if you ask me and they also have some other benefits too.
I sha don tire for this our Labor law, honestly, it doesn't favour the works in any way, especially when you consider what expatriates enjoy when they work in this country for the same company you work with.

It's not like they carried the baby for 9 months, they can bond with the baby weekends, nice move.
