About a month ago one of my prodigies in Nnewi, (south East nigeria) opsudei1 informed me of a new finding he just experienced. It is the norm for us to share info over our small network of technicians spread accross the country.

His information went thus. A ruptured heater core in the honda accord 2005, causing coolant to contaminate and damage engine ecu. Now he claimed he had seen it twice in his workshop, but I was yet to see one in 4years of opening shop, so I said thank you and kept the info in my memory archives.

5days ago, a loyal client called in about issues with his honda accord 2007 I4. Problems experienced were blinking immobiliser light. I ask if he had a spare key, he said no, I told him to take out the battery terminal and leave car alone for a while. He messaged 30mins later that the car started, but engine was making funny noises and in his words, jerking violently . I reminded him about the battery terminal that should be removed. Seems my guy had parole that evening so he called in kazeem to have a look at it. Next message I got on my phone was that kazeem said the engine had hooked I still reminded him to Take out the battery terminal.

Next day I offered him a spare car to use (premium client package) , as I was unable to come to his location to look at vehicle. By tuesday he reminded me it was a public holiday and I should pls find time to come look at the vehicle.

so I armed my self with basic tools and went to location.

So I asked client if this was normal, and he affirmed it was very strange.

Any history of overheating, he said no.

Got into car, and placed key in ignition, immobiliser light (green key notification) was blinking with ignition on, I turned the key to see if engine was frozen stiff, it rolled just fine, but didn't start.

first thought that came to mind was a leaking heater core, so I went straight for the engine ECU

It was looking discoloured with pink substance...

I took out the engine ecu and it was wet with coolant. At this point I was 100per sure the heater core had ruptured.

Opened it up and it was a horrible sight

Sadly we had to replace the engine ecu, reprogrammed the new one, but car took a very long time to start.

I bypassed the heater core line back to the engine, vehicle will do without the heater core for the time being.



After replacing faulty coils and a set of spark plugs, and car ran as good as new.


For clarification
The main function of the heater core, being of course a part of a vehicle's heating system, is to provide heat to the passenger compartment. ... Engine coolant flows into the heater core and the heat contained in the coolant is transferred to the fins of the core.

Thanks Gazzuzz for this. The many problems of using water in the cooling system.

Guys should also watch out for water and poster colour mix sold as coolant! My brother got this once.

The truth is that genuine car maintenance costs a lot, but many people choose to compromise.
