Finally finished watching Black Panther.

There is a saying in my place: Don't look too closely at the anus, otherwise you will see a lot of rubbish. grin

That said, I will not come down too hard at the movie for the simple reason that for once, Africa is not depicted as a starving, corruption ridden continent at war with itself. Like someone pointed out, it is movie that gives a middle finger to racists like that Professor Hugh Trevor-Roper, who infamously described African history as 'darkness'- the ..."unrewarding gyrations of barbarous tribes in picturesque but irrelevant corners of the globe..."

This is a Hollywood production, and the past years have seen producers doffing their hats to minorities in productions Coco that saw an all Latino cast for the first time ever, and Black Panther is one of these bold forays into uncharted Hollywood territory.

While it is flawed in many aspects (let's not even go there), the saving grace of the movie is the depiction of Africa and Africans, although it is even faulty in that aspect. Seriously, most African societies have a system of checks and balances that can prevent even the most autocratic leaders from completely destroying age old traditions. Even if he succeeds, it can't be done overnight. A stranger cannot ascend the throne and in a blink of an eye destroy a kingmaking practice that has been on ground for centuries. The movie producers got it wrong there.

Be that as it may, I love the music and some of the action sequences. The acting is average and the gaddem fake accents distracted me from the dialogue, but I simply enjoyed feasting my eyes on that eye candy, Chad Bosewick. Chocolate! Meooooow wink grin

My favourite line in the movie is..."don't scare me so much, colonizer!" cheesy

7/10 is my verdict, and I'm sticking to it angry
Let me go and watch it first but i have a feeling that no matter how good it is, i will be underwhelmed because of the hype that the movie gas garnered. I've not met a single person who has had anything bad to say about the movie and that's why i'm scared because i tend not to really like what most people like. I hope i'm wrong.

It's not bad really. Just not all that is hyped to be. The people raving over the movie are mostly the western media

Genre: Horror

If you enjoyed the movie IT then you'll definitely like this one, cos they're kinda similar. Though, this one is very graphic & certainly not for the faint hearted

Your favorite line was condemned by foreign blogs.

Just like you talk about check and balances.

America never colonized any country, and the techy Shuri must've known that.

So why call an American man a colonizer? Because he is white? Now that's just racism.

Though i also feel the writers shouldn't have made Killmonger challenge for the Throne, but they wanted to make him a total villain.

(We all grew up watching Hollywood and feel the joy when Actor prevails over the Boss which is equal to happy ending for the movie, movie critiques and our increase in knowledge due to internet now see most of us root for villains in movies)

This is a guy with a family connection to his Wakander origin, and it was clear his father taught him a lot.
He referred to Queen mother as 'Aunty', called Zuri 'Uncle James', T'Challa he called 'cousin'.

The boy had a rough childhood, and you know how all these 'tokunbo' children behave as if they are better than children back home, because they were born abroad.

He just wanted a family.

The elders in the throne room should have calmed him down when he challenged to take the throne. Try and make him feel welcome, while T'Challa also will apologize on behalf of his father, since he also know that what his father did was bad.

Then bring Killmonger into the fold, so that him and T'Challa will join forces together to defeat the villain.

Now, they need a villain to sacrifice, and the villain should have been Klaue. They should have made Klaue all powerful and defeat him in the end.

Dude met his dad dead at the hands of his uncle, then dedicated the rest of his life to seeking vengeance. And you think he was looking for warm hugs? As long as his backstory remains unchanged, that outcome is highly unlikely. And they would also have to give Klaue more depth if he's to be the primary villain

Are you sure you've been on the internet since February? Cos haters (I can't bring myself to call them critics) have just been whining unnecessarily about how overrated and overhyped the movie is. I remember having to deal with people who just jumped on a bandwagon without looking to see where it was headed during the cinematic run. I'm not going to stress myself this time. Haters gon hate.
My advice: If you didn't like Spiderman: Homecoming, then don't bother watching Black Panther.

On the subject of the accent, the cast really tried in replicating a decent Xhosa accent, as the language used was also Xhosa. I don't know any Xhosa personally so I can't say how spot on they were. But I wasn't put off by the accents.
Next, Killimonger didn't do away with the king making tradition. He destroyed the heart shaped herb. You could still challenge for the throne but you wouldn't receive the power of the Black Panther if you win. That's assuming he accepts your challenge.

Go and watch Half of a yellow sun or Beast of no nation(all the kids in this movie performed ten times better than anything black panther cast(Jordan excluded) had to offer)
also watch City of God.

Are we discussing half of a yellow sun/beast of no nation? Those straight to DVD/streaming bombs about more stereotypical STRIFE IN AFRICA?
Go to Europe/south america/Asia or even here in Africa &ask people there if they've ever watched/ever heard of the movies Half/Beast.
Many wouldnt have because the films weren't mega hits/widely distributed but black panther was.
The post I first quoted on this thread claimed black panther was an oyibo film and I simply stated, many black people were involved in the movies' production so saying we are excited because oyibos financed, produced & are praising the movie is complete hogwash.
Now you quit projecting your reality on me by referring to my earlier post as emotional

The power of the Black Panther is part and parcel of the king making tradition. Batu or whatever gave them thebknowledge at the beginning of time.

Killmonger destroyed an age long practice of bestowing a new king the power of the BP.

I found it amusing.

They can condemn it but the colonialists had white skin, regardless of his origin. Besides, i viewed it in a different light because Americans and Europeans are still colonialists in their own way- economic colonialists. They influence and in covert ways control the economies of many 3rd world countries through loans and so-called 'foreign aid'.

Abeg let's not even get into that territory.

Bro it's possible, even rape victims forgive rapists over time.

The forgiveness arc is possible if they wanted to explore it.
It was T'Challa father that did it, so why was he hellbent on destroying his son in return?

Why did he want the throne? Was his father's death as a result of throne tussle?

He was just a disturb radicalized boy who needed affection.

In fact if not that W'Kabi is at loggerheads with T'Challa for not catching Klaue, he wouldn't have allowed Killmonger in like that.

Destroying the heart-shaped herb means distortion of the king-making tradition because during the process, the vibranium power is magically removed from the king and he fights without his power. This means after the destruction of the herb, during the next king-making fight, the winner will have no power returned because the herbs has been destroyed. If Nakia hadn't stolen one of the herbs, T'challa wouldn't have gotten his power back and be healed.

Do you read or follow comic story lines?

A large number of movies are based off particular story arcs.

Eg old man Logan is loosely based off of Logan

The dark nl Knight is based off multiple story lines with Knight fall in particular. Anyone who read Knight fall would have wanted to see bane break batman's back.

The first iron man movie is a modern retelling of the iron man origin movie.

Nice twists you've got there. Killmonger is too good a character to kill off immediately. If they had joined forces against a powerful enemy in the guise of a massively strong Klaue who had injected Vibranium and became a badass, the ending fight would've been more brutal and enjoyable.

Another reason why I'm not too harsh on Black Panther is the same reason I defended Wonder Woman when some people wanted more action and fight scenes from her.

Both BP and Wonder Woman are just the beginning of their stories. They're the part 1 of their coming sequels, so the like the part 1s of other superhero movies like Captain America, they're not great during their first production. Basically, the directors are trying steer the movie towards an intended target, so it's more like storytelling, giving us a glimpse of who the acts are. I'm sure we'll see a much improved actions in the subsequent sequels.

I thought Predestination was the magnum opus of mind-twisting for me till I completed Memento few hours ago. Good God!! This movie is the pinnacle of mind-fuckîng so far for me.

With Predestination, I understood about 80% of the movie before reading up on the final 20% to fully understand the movie. But Memento? I was confused all through. Never have a movie got me confused all through its duration like Memento. It left me dazed. Two happenings occurring sequentially, involving the same characters, in a chronological and reverse order, before reaching an amazing climax. When I read the various explanations and fully understood the movie, my jaw dropped. Amadeo, I doff my heart for you. You sabi good movies. Damn!! Christopher Nolan is an amazing director.

Memento, for such a brilliant script, I'm giving it 10/10.

That's why I said his backstory would have to be changed. If he needed affection, he would have hesitated before killing his girlfriend or he wouldn't have killed her at all. He would have accepted to atone for his crimes in jail over death. The Killimonger we saw in the movie was past redemption. A Killimonger from an alternate universe might need affection, though. grin

https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Old_Man_Logan

https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Logan_(2017_film)

all you had to do was google. it cannot be too hard

https://www.wikiwand.com/en/The_Dark_Knight_Rises

The film's storyline has been compared with the Batman comic book series' story arc "Knightfall" (1993), which showcased Bane; the mini-series The Dark Knight Returns (1986), in which Batman returns to Gotham City after a ten-year absence; and the story arc "No Man's Land" (1999), which depicts a Gotham cut off from the rest of the world and overrun by gangs.[68][69] The nickname "the Dark Knight" was first applied to Batman in Batman #1 (1940), in a story written by Bill Finger.[70][71] Nolan confirmed the Joker would not return in the third

people making movies based off comics are lucky or perhaps unlucky because they have decades of material to choose from

the next x-men movie is going to feature the dark pheonix saga - hopefully this time they will get it right

a lot of the criticism of comic book movies is more towards how really badass villainsa re dumbed down. if you watched batman and robin you would have wanted to shoot joel schumacher for what he did to bane, one of the most popular and deadliest villains in the batman universe.

your modern marvel or dc superhero movie takes large parts of its story from character, places and events in the comic storyline.

they may adapt it to modern times, but it is still the same story

the original iron man story had tony stark imprisoned to make a weapon. every batman movie references the death of his parents as a child.
