Applying for a Job? Stand Out – Don’t Be Generic

After some time searching for a suitable job, you’ve finally seen a job advert that suits your skills and aspirations. Great news! Yet, there is more to be done. For every job vacancy, hundreds or thousands of people apply. In order to ensure you are among the chosen candidates, you need to stand out from the pack. How? Simple; your CV is the first testament to your proficiency. You need to craft it differently from how others write theirs. Let your CV speak who you are, not just a piece of writing.

Tailor Your CV to the Role

In today’s business clime, companies are increasingly using software to screen out candidates even before taking a look at their CV. The meaning of this is that many people who apply for several jobs using the same CV will be disappointed as the software may not find certain keywords in their documents. Consequently, it is very important that you write your CV in accordance with each role or position you hope to fill. Therefore, take your time to tailor your CV to the specific advertised vacancy or position to be filled.

Include Only the Important Things

We need to get real here. Several times, one is tempted to include numerous previously held positions that do not add any value to the CV. This could be due to several reasons. Irrespective, you need to understand that including irrelevant information in your CV may do you more harm than good when applying for a job. More importantly, fresh graduates need to get rid of the idea of adding innumerable positions held during school days. One, most companies are aware that as a fresh graduate you are not likely to have lots of work experience. Two, you might later laugh at yourself when you imagine the positions you claimed to have held in school. If you have led a group toward an important goal or had a short stint in an organisation, those are the things you should include.

Keep Your CV Straight and Simple

Inasmuch as you can use any template to write your CV, you should endeavor to keep it as precise and concise as possible. This implies that your CV should both be brief and well-detailed. The simplest things are the easiest to remember, and the well-detailed ones carry lots of weight. The more extensive a CV is, the more prone you are to complicating your statement and confusing the reader. You don’t need to state that you have digital skills thrice in a single CV. Once is enough. One of the keys to ensuring you keep your CV straight and simple is by going over it again and again before you forward it.

Come with Your Own Questions

Without any doubt, you must have been told to anticipate the interviewer’s questions. You should do your research about the company, the hiring manager, the possible salary, and lots more. Well, you really should do those. Additionally, you should prepare your own set of ‘intelligent’ questions. Since you are an outsider, you cannot understand the company’s policies on all areas. This should give room for curiosity on your own part. Before going for that interview, have your own set of ‘intelligent’ questions. Your questions should be kept brief. This could be the catalyst you just need.

Don’t Defeat Yourself before the Game

In life, genius is rare. What is even rarer than genius is courage. Many job candidates lose the job even before applying due to factors they could have suppressed. Don’t let this be you. It is true that (good) jobs are hard to come by. The few ones that show up have huge requirements and/or will receive massive applications that make your chances even slimmer than it is. Yet, the last thing you should do is give up when you haven’t even tried. Put in your effort. Craft your CV in the best possible way. Forward it to the right channel. Draw up the courage, and relax your mind.

Think Win-Win

Many times, job candidates have the mentality that the job of the hiring manager is to screen out the unfit candidates. While that is part of the duty of the hiring manager, his most important task is to bring in the best. So, rather than thinking someone is out there to bring down your hopes and aspirations, you should see it more like someone trying to bring you to the realms of your dreams. Think of a win-win circumstance where you have what you need and the company has hers too. When preparing for a job interview, don’t hold the mentality of trying to avoid the axe. Rather, focus on being the best choice.

Know and Understand the Content of your CV

During the course of writing a CV, many will be lost inserting who they think/wish they are but are not. Many people would even write false positions they held in certain organisations withoutknowing the role of the position. Companies are not fools. Hiring managers have been in the game for years. Though not always, they can spot holes in your CV. While you may write fanciful things aboutyou (it’s your CVs anyways), you should be able to comprehend every piece of information you have included. A CV is the most perfect novel of anyone. Ensure your novel doesn’t put you in a mess.

Be Impressive, But Do not Lie

There is absolutely nothing bad in writing all your good attributes in your CV. That is exactly what is expected. However, in the course of trying to look good on paper, many write all sorts of things that do not in any way correspond with who they are or what they have achieved. Trying to make an impression and lying are totally two different things. For this reason, do not say you are (or have done) anything that you are (or have) not. Impress them with what you are able to come up with, but don’t tell lies.
