My thoughts exactly. Or is “Joromi” a trademarked word?
If it is, or if he invented the word, then he might have a case, if not, veterans should stop intimidating the new generation with copyright copyright sue sue sue.

What should KSA now say to the no of artists that have remodelled his songs

For those telling him to go and sit down or to respect himself or he is seeking relevance, I pity you. This man is a professor, former commissioner and owner of a well renowned and popular museum cum art gallery in Benin (Revelation Tourist Palazzo). He is in fact very wealthy both in knowledge and materially. Before Simi, Davido and the rest you had the GUITAR BOY, Sir Victor Uwaifo. I believe he must have trademarked "joromi" well before now. intact the road which leads to his gallery is called joromi. He knows what he is talking about.

More troubling is the glaring hypocrisy of nairalanders, if you go back to the thread on copyright infringement involving tekno and danfo drivers you would be convinced of the level of hypocrisy, on that thread everyone of these kids were calling for tekno's head, one even volunteered to hire a lawyer for danfo drivers, buh in this case it is a different tone... they are all berating Sir victor uwaifo cos simi is their beloved treasure.....sickening I must say

go educate yourself please. is it the word Joromi that Uwaifo is claiming an infringement of or his song 'joromi'?

is 'Hello' not a word? is 'Hello' also not the title of two different popular songs -one by Lionel richie and the more recent one by Adiele?
i tire for nigerians.

the veterans are not intimidating no new generation. those men were youths when they worked their brains and came up with something unique and beautiful. the new generation should stop copying. work your brain, task your mind. and if you must copy get into proper legal arrangements and agreements with the original right holder and give credit to them fir their hardwork and creativity. no be to dey copy people work dey use am shine

I don't agree with him mused but i will never descend to the level of calling him a mumu. This is a musical legend in his 70s we're talking about here, show some respect!

It is just a word! Do you know how many artists have used the word 'Bootylicious' in their music since Beyonce sang it? Do you think they all paid her to sing with it? Even Oxford incorporated the word in their dictionary and paid her nothing for it. No court is going to award settlement to an artist because someone else use a word they coined or used. You can only have a case if your lyrics or beats get used without permission as in the case of danfo drivers vs Tekno saga.

Some posts here are childish. Infringing on someone's intellectual property can result in a serious court case that no right person in his mind would want to get involve.

The word 'Joromi' came alive as a result of the song by Sir Uwaifo, the same word used by Simi. The two songs also has a rhythemic resemblance that you will think is a remix. Simi should have sought permission for the use of Sir Uwaifo lyrics.

Oga the song doesn't sound alike at all

What a disgrace to Nigeria. Please how many presidents do we hear always leaving their country to another country for medical checkup.

Nigeria president going for checkup in UK is a big shame to the country as a whole. If the Nigerian president is not confident about the health care system in his country, then I wonder about the masses that can't even afford a trip by bus to neighboring countries.

The number one citizen of a country finding better health care outside his country and leaving those he rules to die in the country.

We are coming for all politicians soon. We will end all corrupt lives by all means. It is a greater war than that of the child's play Boko Haram and Fulani herdsmen are doing but we know we will be fighting a greater course.

All level of government will be wiped out and the humble shall rule.

We are getting ready to what has never been seen before in Nigeria. No Level for any useless cabal from the presidency.

This is just a brief information for what is expected.

I support you but no killings of ordinary citizens

Simi Is In Trouble For Stealing From Me - Prof. Uwaifo

Days after her boyfriend, Adekunle Gold, called out Nollywood for using his songs without consent, legendary musician, Sir Victor Uwaifo, has said singer Simi is in trouble for "stealing" his intellectual property, 'Joromi'.

Professor Uwaifo's recognition soared when his song 'Joromi' became a hit in 1969. However, he says the song has now become a victim of intellectual property theft as Simi failed to give credit to him when she released her own version in 2017.

Uwaifo made this known in an interview with SaharaReporters at the Annual General Meeting of Copyright Society of Nigeria COSON, in Lagos.

The former commissioner for arts and culture in Edo State described copyright and Intellectual property theft as a very serious issue in Nigeria, saying it must be dealt with urgently as it is reducing the creativity of the new generation of musicians.

According to him, the process of making music has now significantly changed from what it used to be in his time, as “more mediocres” are now in the game.

Apart from the name of the song, the composition itself has no similarity at all to Victor Uwaifo’s song. There are no intellectual property rights in song titles. Baba should go and speak to a lawyer first and stop embarrassing himself. This isn’t the first time he’s said this.

You guys should stop showcasing your ignorance nah. The only similarity between the two songs is the song title and song titiles are "hardly ever" protected by copyright. Moreover Sir Victor Uwaifo did not create the name Joromi, it existed long before him. He popularised it, yes. But he did not create it.

Keep ranting! Plagiarism is plagiarism. Let's even leave the implication of such, if committed with the academic world.

Remember 50cent? He almost gorged out eyes of a "bootlegger" when he saw him in a New York club.

I had a friend who was barred from entering the U.S.A, at JFK Airport because he was found with photocopied 'instruction guide' of AUTOCAD SOFTWARE--98 version. They were mad at him. Those people don't take it lightly when you VIOLATE THEIR PATENT RIGHTS.
What of the Italian instrumentalist who sued Michael Jackson for part usage of his instrumental notes? He won and was paid US $18M then!

Sir Uwaifo has a case against Simi. When her ilk won't stop releasing songs after 2mins sessions in their studios. Just release noise, softened with mixed beats. Days of yore was LYRICS-CENTRIC not these noises. John Drille harped on a chord which could draw their quality men of oldies to him. Lovely country vibes from him.

Lil Kesh need go internship before mapping his own label.

God bless folks.
