@onye babe thanks alot for pointing me in the right direction, all ur contribution means alot to me and i wil have to look for a way to research these area properly. i must confess some of the things i hear and read make me cry. children, youth and the elderly are not properly represented and cared for. a typical example is my mother who earns 30,000 naira a month and have to care for 7 children in the university what if i was not here in the uk, what if i have not waited for them to graduate before i start the pursuit of my degree they would have taken to the street becos when children are not given options in life then life will would have given them wrong inspiration and this is what makes them take to stealing and crime. i know its a bit like stating the obvious but it is so sad.

Lagos Actually pays well. They have passed the Prision reform Bill and need a lot of Social workers to coordinate child and community services.
FCDA pays reall well too. Hospitals like National Hospitals pay well.
@all, if you dont know somehing, try to find out, broaden your knowledge. How can you say there are no social workers in Nigeria? Maybe we do not make a lot of noise but there are over 10000 registered social workers in Nigeria, Go to any major hospital and ask for a social worker. Please learn to know

@ Poster

Please note that there are lots of Social Workers in Nigeria. For the fact that it isn't a well recognised and known profession in Nigeria doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. We've got people who read Social Works just like you did. The problem we have is that most of our NGOs in here do not seem to place much importances on the need to employ them except in Federal and State Social services such as Remand Homes, Hospitals etc. Some weeks back I was opportuned to meet a very passionate Social Worker in Child Life-Line Centre, Owode-Ibeshe in Ikorodu. And, he told me that the professional body of Social Workers are working towards enforcing that most NGOs employ the services of qualified Social Workers.

Well that's good to hear, but if many do not know they exist (As social workers)
It shows how well organised they are.
It's not about noise making it's about 'reach' We definitely need more people like the OP.

Not everyone can be a Doctor, Pilot or Social worker. If you are bothered about our population you can take a second degree or masters in Social work and make it 10001

social work and nigeria = oxymoron, there are more pastors in Sokoto than social workers in Nigeria

says a lot about God fearing people doesn't it?

social work is a good profession if for selfless reasons and it exits every where in Nigeria.

It is like the op is trying to buy the idea of setting up an NGo, good, this is deviation from his social work. i love niger for life and live in US .i want to remind the op to do something that will create job instead of advocating for motherless, handicaps and so forth that the govt that has not taken care of salaries should come in and take care of this burden.even in America, haven't you heard that social security is almost finishing? Please don't waste ur time ,start thinking of Ngo instead of social work;these are two different things.

I agree with you. Besides you dont just start an NGO, i worked in 3 different organizations before i gathered enough experience to start mine. Even with all my experience and connections the begining was very very hard, but when you are real and you in for the right reasons and not money things will add up, a lot of NGOs spring up but die off after some months of donating items to orphanages, it takes real willpower and courage for any organization in Nigeria to survive talkless of one that does not produce money or profit. A lot of NGOs which started with mine have died off even some that were led by very powerful women becuase they were in it for recognition and for people to praise them. This our work is as selfless as anything, when you start helping peopole and start developing the GOD complex then you loose it, God does not share his stage with anyone, you have to always remember that you are just a vessel and God can use anyone.
The good part is that Nigerians are learning to be more aware of the poverty and suffering around them and private citizens are learning to do more for pople who are not so fortunate. 60% of our funding comes from individulas, some who do not even work but make it a point to donate every single month. That keeps me going. I sent the poster a mail, try to reply when you can we will talk more.
Congrats on making a 2. 1, keep the flag flying

Social Work is good and meaningful abroad, because the Govt there knows their impact in the society, the society abroad can not survive without
these Social Workers, not to talk of employment generation the people benefit from such scheme, but in Nigeria the reverse is the case, Even if the Nigerian Govt doesnt encourage such scheme, because Govt dont appreciate their impact , some of the social workers too are not honest in the way and manner they operate in nigeria, many of them cover up in the name of social work to perpetrate EVIL, ranging from CHILD TRAFFICKING to CHILD SLAVERY etc
.??

If you wouldn't mind, I would like to contribute some of my xperience to some of your project activities in order to broaden my scope. Pls, I'm not interested in the money. I'm only interested in the exposure and opportunities such things bring. my email is mailay2day@yahoo.com

Thank you dear. There are thousands even better than me. mrs. Edoh of FCDA social welfare services is one woman that makes me marvel, she is a widow but her house is a temporary camp for abandoned babies, she will go to Marababa at 6am not minding the traffic with her own car if they inform her that a baby has been abandoned there. I met here during one of my cases, he comitment pass my own, a civil servant oh, and she has been doing this for 20 years she never tire. Then the ones in National Hospital are something else, everybody has feeding bottle and pampers in thier locker and homes, because if you are on duty and someone runs and leave her baby, your home becomes a temproray home before they can find an orphanage for the child

I'm really impressed with this thread. The problem with Nigeria and Nigerians is that we do not take the time to look for information before we comment on issues. I've always known that there are social workers in Nigeria since age 6. It is just that the government has not promoted the idea of asking people to be social workers. Unlike Nigeria, Social Workers and Social Care professionals are highly cherished in the western world. I don't know of any Nigerian University that offers Social Work as a degree. However, I know a proper research through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board [JAMB] might reveal one or two Higher Institutions offering the course under a different name.  A lot of NGO's in Nigeria failed because the people behind them did not really know what they had got themselves into and were not equipped with the patience and skills that sustains such projects. I hope more publicity will be given to Social Care work in Nigeria and that a bill will be passed by our senators to make Social Work a noble profession in the country.

@Aisha2, keep up the good work. I admire people who follow their dreams with a passion. Cheers.

Thanks dear, one of our board of advisers who is also in the National assembly has sponsored a bill on that, bill has passed second reading.
University of Jos, Ibadan, Ile ife, ABU and a few others have courses in Social work. It is not a money making profession, its more of a calling so people shy away from it. being a social worker takes so so much, not everyone may be able to cope with the challenges and most times we are not appreciated. when we see babies abandoned in dustbins, or girls who have been sexually abused, and children who are victims of abuse no one asks how what happens after, we just comment and go to sleep, the social worker to make sure that child has an oppurtunity for a good life. I personally have had to initiate arrests of some parents who involve their children in street begging and get the children transfered to an orphanage. We all have a role to play, stop giving child beggers money, most of these kids are trafficked from villages and brought o town to come and beg. Like i wrote in one thread, a deaf corper serving in Abuja got invovled in the lives of some deaf and dumb begge=ing kids and realised that they were trafficked from the south west, one was even kidnapped and he had the papers where she was declared missing with him, he brought down the whole trafficking syndicate because he had the courage to go and inform the police. The master of the syndicate stays in a big hotel in Abuja, they go beg and bring him returns he was arrested with a briefcase full of money, loads of money, he also sexually harasses the girls. One of the girls about 13 was preganant.
You see we all have our part to play, dont turn your eyes away when you see evil, say something , get involved, Nigeria may have its problems but let us try to do our own part.
Social work is really hard work, if you are in it for the money yes you may get an NGO and rake million but the aim is defeated, its more like a pastorial calling, you may not access Gods blessing that comes with it

AIsha i have sent you an e-mail i must confess the lessons i have gotten from this thread i could never have gotten it from any university or colleges all that have been said is true, the reason i choose to be a social worker is becos i believe some days you and i will be able to influence policies that cateres for what we know as pies (physical intellectual emotional social needs of our children. here in the uk there is act known as every child matters and it is upon that every benefit given to a child is drawn from. reason is that the government understand that the salaries or earnings that parents gets may not be enough to cater for children and if they struggles and becomes depress it might put the children at risk and becos of that they introduce the provision of sure start, play park, health visitors to visit families with children just to make sure they are ok and even the parents gets vouchers for vegetables and milk as well as child benefit all from the every child matters act.

my sister aisha i sat down one day and i decided i dont want to read law any more that i want to read a course that puts me in a position of care, the reason is that i have seen how mothers and children suffer in nigeria and maybe if i do social work i might be able to help in my own little way either by working as a social worker in nigeria or work with people like you and try to fight the inequality we suffer today in nigeria.

aisha my sister i know this is not an easy task and if it was easy i would not even think of it, how do you make sense of a mother who earns 23,000 naira monthly and yet has children in the uni to take care of not only that he is got to pay is rents even though she is a graduate she cant even get well enough salary to look after their children and pay her rents let alone transportation. please if any one is reading this tell me why we will not have a generation of thieves and criminals. and yet you have people who have thesame numbers of head receiveing hundreds of millions where is the equality. so i think that the whole system is not fair.
this is where we social workers come in policy making et al.
we can not get those who read agricultural science, political science, banking and finance to sit down in one place called national assemblies and dictate what and what will not happen to our children. becos they dont even have a clue.
here in the uk every ministry have a child unit be it police, army, any thing you can think of. so i think we should be able to resisit some things that are happening and challenge them. enough is enough we must be able to represent our children in every level. people may start thinking that i have no idea what naija is like, i do know as i

aisha exactly what i am doing, i do have some experience though as it is parts of the criteria to study social works here in the uk, but i am already working as a qualified social worker and i get paid alot for my service as a graduate i earn about 500,000 naira but money is not everything and i am just not happy doing this here dont mind receiving peanuts to work in a country that is mine if you know what i mean. i am so glad i have your e-mail andplease with ur permission i will call you from time to to for advice, help and guidance. and when i finally come home then we can talk and share ideas.
but i am starting to think that social work practice in nigeria is quite different from that of the uk. i think it is highly influenced by culture. thanks aisha. i hve learnt alot from you and others, if u dont mind what uni did u get your degree from. i got mine from university of brighton, uk.

our aunties and neighbours are your social worker in nigeria, do another degree or stay in host country for a while?  it's not your fault tho but then social workers aid is the least of all their problems in nigeria now, pothole is still killing people.  the closest alternate job is a prison counsellor or something in that field of people behaving badly, goodluck

In that case my mum, God bless her soul, was the best social worker that ever lived! She cared and cooked finger-licking dishes for many, even people that were from various tribes, for free, so much much that her house was always full. Not least as she had the habit of doing "sara" (free for all food) regularly. We get the reward from GOD now.

I have realised sadly and painfully that most Nigerians will run down anything and anybody for no reason.
@Disguy, Define Government regulated Social workers? People who have gone to school earned a degree in social work, registered under a body of social workers and are employed in the field of social work in Organizations. Those staff I mentioned are Officail Social workers in National Hospital, due to the strain and difficulty of our environement they have to be proactive. they have those items in supply because sometimes hwne a cild whose parents have abdoned him/ her is ready to be discharged from the hospital and logistics of being transfered to the orphanage have not been totally dealth wth, someone has to take in the child for the interim. These are Governement trained and regulated workers, so they take in these babies and keep them for some days before the child will be transfered to an Orphanage. I know what free will charity workers are and i know what professional social workers are, This is my life, some people do business, some people do contracts but this is all I do, I was a charity worker since i was 10, and i went to university to major in socail work, i graduated as a professional, and after a brief stint with a bank (Barely 2 months) i left to continue my calling. This is all i know how to do, so please dont insult my inteligence i beg you
