The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State, Mr James Eze, released a press statement after the state exco today, disclosing the state plan to ban Okada riders in two major cities.

Read below

Commercial motorbike (Okada) operators in Onitsha and Awka, the capital city of Anambra State have been given until July 1, 2018 to change to another trade or vacate the two cities for good.

This is one of the many resolutions from the meeting of the Anambra State Executive Council today, Tuesday, May 22, 2018. The ultimatum given to Okada operators in the two cities is part of the overall strategy adopted by the state government to deepen its crackdown on crime and restore sanity to Onitsha and Awka.

Similarly, residents of some make-shift structures on the banks of the River Niger stretching from Onitsha to Ogbaru have also been given until August 1, 2018 to relocate from those places along the waterfront as they have been marked for demolition. This is also a part of the campaign against the men of the underworld in the state.

The deadlines given to Okada operators and the shanty-dwellers are intended to offer them enough time to make the necessary adjustments in order to fit into the emerging socio-cultural scenario in the state.

Other far ranging resolutions of the Council include the establishment of a Committee on Environment with a mandate to clean up Anambra State, clearing out garbage dumps and overflowing drainages and demolishing illegal structures that are either obstructing the way or ruining the aesthetics of the Anambra environment. The committee is expected to sustain the on-going campaign to put an end to roadside trading that often leads to avoidable traffic congestion and return sanity to the roads and highways of Anambra State.

Re-inforcing the hard line posture of his administration against street-trading and erection of illegal structures across the state, Governor Willie Obiano specifically commended the agencies behind the on-going demolition exercise in the state, urging them to sustain the momentum until the state begins to wear a better look. He also sent a note of warning to owners of illegal structures along the famous Awka Road in Onitsha, saying that very soon the demolition team would sweep through the area.

He frowned at the current practice by Awka residents who sometimes dump their waste bins right in the middle of Zik Avenue and warned that anyone caught doing that would pay a heavy penalty.

The governor further announced that important public places like the Prof Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre, Alex Ekwueme Square and the vast premises of the Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) would soon be given a facelift and properly remodelled to fit into the dynamics of the day.

According to him, the Amphitheatre of the Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre would be redesigned to serve as a stadium and completed as soon as possible.

The governor also frowned at the spate of daring encroachment on government land in the state by speculators and warned that there would be severe consequences for anyone who wanted to flagrantly break the law.

This is a good decision but palliative measures should taken to give the okada riders soft landing.
They feed mouths with their current businesses.

The people I pity most are Nnewi merchants that deal on Okada and its spare parts not those Uncircumcised abokkis and igalas riding reckless Okada in Anambra state and putting people lives in jeopardy.

All those abokkis that sleep in mosques and 302 Artillery barrack should go back to their Boko Haram ravaged dusty villages in Arewanistan

How can Anambra be better with this mentality? Okada was stopped in PH and Aba, haven did not fall. It will be stopped in Anambra and nothing will happen.

Onitsha have some big streets that you can't take Keke or bus to like venn road south and others.people who stop at upper iweka flyover when coming from other towns or states are we to enter keke to our streets when its not pliable by Keke.I don't think there is any small city with huge commercial tendencies like Onitsha and without okada it will pose a problem
i think the government should first address what commuters will take as alternative mode of transport and the roads they will ply.I don't like okada as they constitute nuisance but armed robbers use Keke too and if you can be able to fight off one criminal okada man you can't fight two or more robbers in keke

Good development. Afterwards over 99.9% of these riders are not even Anambrans. They should take the bikes to their states.

Abokkis and irritating Igala people should take that thing to their dusty villages, I'm happy the population of Abokkis constituting nuisance in Anambra will reduce by 90%.

Politicians will always be politicians! When they need your vote, they can even tell you to come and dance on their head but ones they have gotten it, they now remember what is good for the state.

I remember during election year in Anambra, Obiano asked business people to stop paying any form of tax but immediately after election, he even asked them to start from where he asked them to stop. Si unfair.

We don come Nigeria already so we go face am as e be.

Security in Anambra is topnotch. If you do anyhow in Anambra you go see anyhow. Who should provide alternative for them? Did anyone bring them to Anambra? They chose to come so it is time to return to their state if they can't adapt to the new development.

The difference is that Anambra has banned it in its 2 major cities while others just banned it in just their capitals.

I passed Aba just last week on my way to Akwa-Ibom and I saw okada all the the place. I noticed also around ariaria because I stopped to buy mobile bank. They may have pronounced the ban but didn't enforce it because the govt understand that the roads are not in place yet particularly in Aba.

This is bla bla bla.

If I travel for greener pasture elsewhere I will abide by the rules in that place. You don't have to bring your nuisance from your state to another state all in the name of greener pasture. Besides the ban is just the 2 major cities, though the 3rd may follow later. Rural areas in the state is still open for such bikers but no longer in the major cities.

so okada is stopping Anambra from being better?

so you're comparing Anambra the heart of igbo and the commercial center of SE and definitely Nigeria to those cities you mentioned.

do you know how it will inconvenience a local trader in main market or that struggling mother in Ose?
do Keke na pepe ply any route in onitsha or do you expect a struggling trader in onitsha to be able to chatter Keke about #500 to his/her short destination when okada of #100 will go the same place faster.
the cities that banned okada is their crime rate lower than Anambra state or don't you hear scores from criminal in Portharcourt almost every day.

do you know how many igbos living in anambra this will render jobless or how do you expect that trader at nnewi that borrowed millions from the bank to import motorcycle spare parts to cope?
and the list go on
mr man I am an Anambarian from onitsha precisely
but i don't support this move
yes i support banning of okada operations from 7pm but not total banning.
do you know that criminals operate with Keke now in onitsha at night and they're are more stealth than before.

so don't support any government moves just because you're benefiting from the government or in the government.
if Willie thinks of security he should equip and employ more local vigilantes

You are not from Onitsha, because an average Onitsha indigene is very well enlightened. You are sounding like some of this immigrant okada riders. It is time for them to go back to their states with their okada, we don't need it anymore. Govt has been clearing the roads around main market of street traders so that buses, taxis and keke can run through the markets for ease of moving goods and services.

Over 99.9% of those okada riders are not even from Anambra, so why should we allow immigrants from other state to come and break our rules while leaving their states.

If you cannot abide by the new rule/policy of the govt then relocate elsewhere and continue with your okada.
