The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) is a Federal Government agency that issues weather and climate forecasts for the safe operation of aircraft, ocean going vessels and oil rigs. The forecasts helps governments prepare for natural disasters (like floods) and also assists farmers to plan for the planting season. The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) is a Federal Government agency that is tasked with provideing information on the status and trends of the nation’s water resources including its location in time and space, extent, dependability, quality and the possibilities of its utilization and control, through the provision of reliable and high quality hydrological and hydrogeological data on a continuous basis. NIMET and NIHSA have issued alerts and forecast the possibility of flood in 5 LGAs (KadunaNorth,Kaduna South,Igabi,Soba,Kaura) of Kaduna State. That storyteller guy in one of the twitter reactions asked the same question I had in mind. Can there be more specific timelines even though it's a forecast  Looks like the job of being specific has been delegated to the residents when the tweet advises residents be vigilant.  NIMET's job is to forecast. It's the job of federal, state and local governments to take action to reduce the effect (evacuations, clearing drainages, etc.). NIMET has done its job. It's now left to the government to do its job.[/quote] Just to add; it is now the job of the media agencies (Hausa, community radio or conventional) to disseminate this information to the people. NOA Kaduna should start sensitizing people on what to do. Same with NEMA. Better we are proactive this time. |
