Going natural is a big step in achieving healthy hair, and healthy hair is the best hair. First let me inform you of the dangers of relaxers/perms:

Breakage
Next, another related issue, using relaxers has a tendency to cause breakage. Given that relaxers permanently alter your natural hair texture, your hair will become weaker and more likely to break. Over time, this can cause serious breakage to various areas of your hair, if not all of your hair in general.

Scalp Infections
Another fairly common issue among those who rely on relaxers for hair straightening, scalp infections are very serious and can cause massive and irreversible. In fact, several consumers have had to file lawsuits to attempt to rectify the issue. These serious infections can cause permanent bald spots and often have to be treated by a professional.

Respiratory Issues
The number one reason why relaxing your natural hair is dangerous for your health, they can literally cause health problems. Filled with very strong chemicals (such as lye), the chemicals in relaxers can affect both hairdressers as well as the ones receiving the relaxers. Breathing in the chemicals on the regular basis or even periodically, and over time, can cause symptoms such as prolonged sneezing, coughing, wheezing and other respiratory issues. These symptoms can be all the more damaging to those with pre-existing respiratory issues.

Are you scared yet?

Moving on, before you even consider going natural you should think of how you are going to do it. Will you let the under-growth of your natural hair keep growing and then you cut off the relaxed/damaged hair at the end, cut away the relaxed hair and grow out and maintain whatever is underneath that, or you could just shave your head completely down and grow your hair out all over again. This all depends on you and what you think is the most beneficial.

After you have decided upon this, the next step is to identify your hair texture. The type of hair you have will dictate the type of products you can and can not use. At the bottom of this page is a hair texture chart if you are not sure. Most black people tend to have hair texture ranging fro 3a (curly) to 4c (kinky/coily). Type 4 hair tends to absorb a lot more moisture than looser hair textures do therefore they need to constantly be moisturized. Never let type 4 hair become completely dry. I repeat, NEVER LET TYPE 4 HAIR TO BECOME COMPLETELY DRY OR YOU SHALL SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES! When Type 4 hair is dry it starts to tangle and then you will have to detangle and it will become painful.
Type 3 hair is similar but not completely the same. Type 3 hair doesn't need as much moisture to be maintained. In fact, when there is too much moisture in type 3 hair it becomes crinkly and smells a bit odd. You don't want smelly hair.

There are many things you can do with your natural hair such as dreadlocks, sisterlocks, twists, braids, braid extensions, and you can still straighten it without chemicals. I personally have had sisterlocks (tiny dreadlocks) for the passed 5 years and they grow long very quick in my own opinion. You can also still wear a wig with your natural hair under as long as you have a protective style under. A protective style such as cornrows/braids is good to have under your wig cap.

If you have any questions please comment and I would be happy to answer! grin

My original post about that was just a joke, as in humor. And a compliment shouldn't overstep boundaries of the person on the receiving end, therefore it is no longer a compliment if I feel uncomfortable, defeating the purpose of the compliment.
