The students of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, have on Thursday the 5th of April 2018 staged a sit-at-home protest to kick against the above 100% increase in accommodation and other fees by the management of the institution. Presently, the fees paid by a Clinical medical student is #33000, with #21,000 designated as 'school fee' and #12,000 as 'clinical levy'. Accommodation fee is #14,000 per individual, in a 2-man room. The proposed increase includes a newly introduced 'Professional Training Levy' which will cost #100,000 for the first year, with a view to yearly increments for the next three years; #40,000 as accommodation fee for the same rooms while Clinical levy and School fee remain the same. This implies that Clinical students would go from paying about #47,000 to paying about #173,000. It is reported that the increase has been justified by the Provost of the College of Medicine, Prof. Olapade Olaopa as necessary, due to the scaling down ofd subventions alloted to the University and by extension, the College, by the government. He claims that the medical and dental students pay 'peanuts' relative to their counterparts in developed countries and even other Nigerian universities. #SaveIbadanMedicine See more photos from the protest here: http://www.sisisalewa.ga/2018/04/university-of-ibadan-medical-students.html
