As of now, it’s Messi.

Unless the Ballon d’Or is a award given for participating in the UCL final.

Ronaldo’s terrible performances in the UCL Semi finals and the final aren’t going to help his case.

Salah and Liverpool have gone trophyless. He shouldn’t win it. Though he has high chances of coming in top 3 or top 5.
Neymar as of today isn’t top 3. But if Brazil wins the WC, his chances will skyrocket.

As of today, if the Ballon d’Or is given to the best individual performer, Messi has to win it.

Not only was he the prime reason for Barcelona winning the double, he’s also won the Golden Boot. And he’s the player to have scored the most goals for club.
On the individual basis, Messi has been consistently fantastic throughout the season.

He has the most goals AND assists across Europe. How he is not everyone’s first choice baffles me. Maybe he needs better PR.

He’s had ONLY one bad game (vs Roma). Likewise, Ronaldo had bad games from the start of the season up until December. Ronaldo then had a good turn in form from January, which ended in the semifinals vs Bayern. He played terribly in the semis and final vs Liverpool.

EVERYONE has bad games.

To me, Messi has to win it, or the Ballon d’Or will become a joke of an award.

[Yes, Ronaldo’s comeback after his poor performances at the start of the season is an argument for him. But he’s been inconsistent. You have to be consistent to win the BDO.]

Ya. As it stands, it’s Messi. World cup will determine but Messi may still have an upper hand. Egypt won’t go far (Salah may not play). I personally think Portugal doesn’t have it in them.
