The road to shitty Easleigh - which is lower middle class in Nairobi - where most Somalis stay

Nairobi - South C - Somali middle class estate - next to Nairobi National Park

Nairobi middle class - is typically like this --

Upper class - is typically like this

Lower middle class - are typically storied apartment blocks.

Slums - built on forest, valleys and along rivers -

And slums are being upgraded to this

Even in the middle of CBD - The Green City in the Sun - will always have some greenery.
That right there is the middle of old CBD - otherwise called Naiobi City Center

Sadly Nairobi is expanding to coffee plantations - and we are producing less & less coffee!

Nairobi - is expanding in all directions - the good thing - slums are not expanding like NIGERIA smiley - they are restricted to the same old 5% of old Nairobi.

Nairobi - the ONLY UN HQ in developing world.

Nairobi greenery is infectious - UN couldn't help but plant trees inside the building

Nairobi & Kenya upper class - live in leafy suburbs - rich suburbs are mostly distinguished by amount of greenery - not amount of concrete you can pour like Nigeria oil baron smiley smiley.

Had to copy this...INDEED NAIROBI WAS SO PLANNED SINGAPORE & MANY CITIES COPIED IT'S MASTER PLAN.

I saw this article and surprised by its erroneous assumptions and misrepresentation regarding Nairobi. Nairobi is a City of 4.3 million people. The notion that Kibera is the largest slum in Africa is a media and NGO created fallacy and fundraising strategy. Kibera is a slum that is less than 2 km across with 160,000 inhabitants according to the last population census. No where near slums like Alexandra, Orangefarm and Kyayelitsha, Cape Flats, Inanda, Tembisa etc in South Africa. The other smaller informal settlements in Nairobi e.g. Mathare, Kwamaiko etc have a combined population of less than 100,000. The Eastern part of Nairobi has quite a number of neighborhoods that are densely populated e.g. Huruma, Dandora, Kariobangi, Kayole, Zimmerman, Githurai etc. These are not slums however neither are they informal settlements but largely dwellings of lower income working class with apartments owned by rich local landlords. These neighborhoods are hubs for small businesses and trade and some are literally 24 hours awake. Its quite erroneous hence to claim that majority of the 4.3million Nairobi inhabitants live in slum. I think Mr. anengiyefa should do himself a favor and visit Nairobi and see for himself a genuinely African built economy and city.

The idea that Nairobi was built from scratch by colonialist is completely erroneous. The pre-independence Nairobi was a collection of few government buildings and hotels (Norfolk, the stanley and Ambassador) and hundreds of indian shops a complete contrast to the Nairobi today. Most of Nairobi CBD skyline has been constructed in the last 40 years of independence. Infact by 1969 Nairobi was seen as one of the best planned city in the Southern Hemisphere with city authorities from as far as Singapore visiting Nairobi for learning purposes. Then for your information whites and asians are less than 1% of the population of Kenya. Post independence Nairobi has been built by locally owned and driven initiatives and plans with most of the skyscrappers coming up in the last 30 years. For your information also, majority of buildings in Nairobi are owned by local businesses and individuals mostly prominent politicians and businessmen as well as the state.
The following link has very good photos of Nairobi in the 60s and just before independence: http://www.mccrow.org.uk/EastAfrica/Kenya/Kenya.htm. Post independence Nairobi skyline is well documented and you can easily google. Note that Nairobi is the only African Country in the top 10 most intelligent cities in the world for two years consecutively. Mr. anengiyefa kindly visit Nairobi and show us those large white/rich asian owned parts of Nairobi.

Even at 160000 people, kibera is too big and ugly.
Re: Kenya Is Ahead of Nigeria In All Aspect (Facts Don't Lie) by rvp20182: 11:16am On May 29, 2018
Most of Nigeria cities with their rusted ironsheet roofing look at lot like Kibera. Kibera is being upgraded and also roads & public toilets are being provided. Makoko I think is the worst..

Typical Kibera - has clean piped albeit illegal water, mostly legal electricity 24-7s, some tarmac road and are close to cbd. This way better than middle class in Nigeria who doesn't get any of that.

Slums occupy only 5% of Nairobi - mostly build several year in illegal gov reserve land - they are not expanding like Nigeria mega slum cities.

Here is Kibera lying next to middle class estate of Ngumo. Unlike Nigeria who raze down illegal slums - in Kenya the slum dwellers have rights - and have to be resettle or relocated peacefully and humanely.

Makoko is very insignificant as it contains less than 1% of the population of Lagos and the majority of it has been destroyed. So, it is inconsequential and completely indescriptive of the living conditions of the poor people of Lagos.

How did they destroy it? Any pics?

Now that he has showed you pics of people boarding the train, what else do you need?

The way I know Nigerian stations, I'd expect a hell of a lot of people crammed up there, some serious pushing and shoving, some even standing inside the trams. But those ones just look like a media thingy. And the smiles! Most of you Nigerians are stone faced when travelling.

That is very lame - Kibera as far as I know is better than most of Nigeria - because every Kibera person enjoy 24-7 electricity, has TV , pipe water and some roads.

Even the Kenyan Somali prefer to identity with Somalia and Eastleigh has many Somali immigrants. Remember the Shifta war?To many Kenyans, Eastleigh is affluent since they can't afford to live there. grin

Somalia is their motherland they can always identify with ancestral homeland. Its true there are many Somali immigrants in Eastleigh, especially illegal ones. Almost any Somali from Somalia or any part of the world wants to settle in Eastleigh once they land in Kenya. Just for the convenience. So the influx raises property prices around that zone to senseless levels. But if you look at the place it just looks wacky I myself would never live there! The economics of Eastleigh doesnt make sense in very many ways. One of the things is the immigrant population which comes with a lot of 'pirate' money. A tycoon from Somalia (mostly involved in criminal activity there e.g charcoal selling, taxing locals etc) can come with millions of cash and use it to buy something that is worth a few millions from fellow Somalis. Just to get a guaranteed business asset because Eastleigh is in many ways the safest place Somalis can invest. You find property worth 10 or 20 million the guy purchases it at something like 100 million and over. Just to kick out any competition. Not your usual demand-supply economics. Nothing is affluent about Eastleigh, the thing is that there are thousands and thousands of businesses going on which get taxed and give a lot of money to the city. And they all revolve around a few common things, apparel especially.

We dont have monorails but I think its better to have none than to have them lying in waste. If indeed its true the thing works as your brother posted, can you point me to a social media page or something like that where Nigerians get regular updates? Where maybe we can get further proof that what was posted wasnt a one off event like a test run ?

Hmmm, makes some sense. But is that why the corrupt Kenyan Police has turned Eastleigh to an ATM?

Mostly when terror attacks arise, the Kenyan police will misbehave in that area. Especially for Somalis without any identification documents, they turn them to cash cows. Its even worse when a Somali cant speak Swahili! You understand how emotions rise during terror situations, police take full advantage. Sometimes I think our policemen are Nigerians tho grin
