What Are The Things To Consider Before Buying A Naija Used Car?? by inikamoze(m): 11:36pm On Jun 04, 2018
To the Motor Experts in the house, I am looking to buy a Nigerian Used Toyota Corolla 2004/2005 or 2006 for use as UBER and I need concise tips on what to look out for before buying one. I have seen many offers online, looking very clean, and the sellers claim its in 'Top condition,Good engine, gear, AC bla bla bla"
I need your candid advise on how to tell a very good used car, what to check out in the car before buying, questions to ask the seller and what one needs to do before/after buying to ensure its not stolen and its hassle free.
PLEASE HELP!!!

Am not a car expert.. But from my experience with maintenance of my car ... my brother one thing for sure ,take mechanic with you to check for sludge in the engine.. Nigerians in general have a bad maintenance culture.. Most Nigerians cars do have sludge due to using wrong engine oil ...if you see a sign of oil sludge, carry you two legs and run for dear life ..it is a red flag indicating that the engine has been abused ..

First, be sure it is not a stolen vehicle. That is the most important thing.

Second, you are not a mechanic. Take a trusted mechanic with you. He knows what to look out for.

Op, these are my contributions/

-Confirm the car isn’t stolen. U can do this by visiting a police station/FRSC office

-Scan the car for any fault

-Have the mechanic confirm the engine has no leaks, hasn’t been ‘ringed’ or changed and is in good condition

-Check the chassis for major accident involving the front and back

-Check the airbags are still intact

-Check the positioning of the seats, gear, wiper etc to ensure it’s not right hand car that was converted

-Check every other fluid and containers to ensure there are no leakages

These are basically all. Every other thing like torn leather seats, tyres, broken rear lights etc are prosthetic and can be fixed. Just tell him you are gonna deduct it from the balance.

Did I help?

Go with a confirmed mechanic since your are not knowledgeable in detecting the slightest scam in a car.

Also don't allow any contact btw your mechanic and the car seller for your own good except you can trust him 100%

Check the mileage. The lower, the better. Any car that has travelled 400,000 km should be destined for the scrapheap, not your 'new' car.

lies

Meanwhile

Op firstly check the genuineness of the car to make sure its not stolen. Try to investigate the ownership history and check for the papers available

Secondly take your mechanic. Pls make sure the mechanic is trustworthy. Not the one that will ne cutting eye with the car seller....Make him check the engine. Let him check that the oil in it is not muddy. If it is just know the engine is on the way to RIP
Also check the transmission. The engine and transmission are the two main headaches in a car. If both are good then less worries

Thirdly. Make una still drive the car small. Pay attention to noises. And while doing that switch to all the gears and observe they are working flawlessly

If all the above is done with no qualms. Op buy your thing

dey there dey shook yourself.

Who tell u say millage is the chief matter for here?

So, a 1999 model of a car, used, and bought by another in 2018 no reach 400k millage since? E dey hibernate?

Constant maintenance of the body parts is the key...

Millage could be reset!!!

It depends on how much u have. U could get same car for 2m,2m or even 500k, if u do not allow greed to overide ur sense of reasoning, u should know what to do

lies the mileage can be adjusted

Although mileage signifies workload but it doesn't mean the car is weakened. A well maintained car with a high mileage could be better than a poorly maintained one with low mileage

.

Is it true that the mileage can be reset to a lower figure to reflect that the car has been fairly used?? My friend told me this &i did not argue much with him since I know nothing about it.

To begin with verify it's not a stolen vehicle by checking the vehicle licence and car papers, see if it's the same number you'll see with the ones engraved on the car mirror or elsewhere, then go with an experienced and RELIABLE MECHANIC (not the one that will tell you everything is ok and the car is good just to go behind you to collect money from the seller And then you find out the car had bad engine ), check the body to ensure it has not been worked on so much that all you see is contours as a result of body-filler and bad painting...the reason for going with an mechanic is because, since you're the one buying the car, you may not be patient enough to check all the necessary things you need to check. I think with that you'll be rest assured of getting a Nigerian used car that you'll not shed tears every night for.
