On June 12 – Lest We Forget by OAM4J: 12:58pm On Jun 07, 2018 |
I was a young boy in June 1993 but I still remember the events leading to that day and the days that followed. I remember the long queues and the eagerness to send the Military back to the barracks. I remember hearing the first set of results that followed and how MKO Abiola was cruising to victory. I remember like yesterday how our HOPE 93 was dashed with the election cancelled, just like that, with no justifiable reason given till today. I remember the tears, the disappointments, the anger, the protests and death of many protesters that followed. The protest made IBB to step aside and he left us with an interim government which the court subsequently declared illegal, but rather than enforcing justice, the military came back full force, jailed MKO for years. I remember how many of the democrats including the likes of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and many other were forced in to exile. I remember how Kudiratu Abiola and many others died in the struggle of actualization of June 12. How Can I forget the joy and how Hope 93 was rekindled with the death of Abacha? We were expecting MKO to be freed, followed with negotiation that will bring him up as the head of state, but before he could smell freedom he was killed. Hope 93 killed, and forever. Because of June 12, South West had the two leading presidential candidates in the 1999 election, though SW proffered Olu Falae, Obasanjo won. And the least that was asked from OBJ was to recognise June 12 as authentic democracy day, rather he ignored it and proclaimed May 29 as democracy day. If we are going to be honest with ourselves, we know that there would never have been May 29 ceremony for OBJ if not for June 12. Yes I supported Buhari government coming to power; I have had some disappointments with his government, though I have no regret supporting the end of “Stealing is not Corruption” legacy. But this that Buhari has done gladdens my heart. Now we have a proper, decent and befitting closure to June 12 struggles. When our children’s children ask why we celebrate June 12, then this story will be repeated in their ears and they will appreciate Aare Bashorun M.K.O Abiola and all those who died and suffered so they have can have democracy. 4 Likes 4 Shares |

Same people who rejected it when Jonathan named Unilag Abiola University. If y'all like him that much why did you protest about Unilag being named after him? 1 Like |

Last week Buhari was extolling the govt of Abacha, this week he's honouring Abiola. You either serve God or mammon, it can't be both. Whose side is Buhari on? With Abiola or with Abiola's killer Abacha? 2 Likes |

This is "symbolic rubbish"( still searching for a better word). Democracy is a means to an end not the end in itself. Democracy as a system of government is supposed to give everyone a voice and a chance but this government has not shown it understands what democracy means or even what it means to govern. When our children’s children ask why we celebrate June 12, then this story will be repeated in their ears and they will appreciate Aare Bashorun M.K.O Abiola and all those who died and suffered so they have can have democracy. Only those who are alive would be able to tell a story. What is the hope of those in Benue or Taraba? This action and many more has shown that this government is all about scoring political points than making people's lives better. I don't think Gani Fawehimi would like to be honored by a government that continues to flout court orders and abuse the rights of its citizens. 2 Likes |

I remember all the political jingles of that election. Some years back, The Nation newspaper gave out some VCD/DVD that contained all that transpired in the June 12 election and subsequent annulment and crisis that engulfed the nation. The demand for democracy during the military regime of Abacha and Abdulsalami, was always in reference to June 12. That is how important June 12 is. 1 Like |

bounty007: Yes, he caused the toppling of Thomas Sankara, Kwame Nkruma, Patrice Lumumba, Samuel Doe and more. He financed Maitatsine, Boko Haram, Fulani Herdsmen and the like. He was once spotted seating Abacha presidential jet- facing him. He organized the 'One million-man march' for Abacha to transmogrify to Civilian regime... 2 Likes |
