Oath Inc today announced that it is shutting down the once popular Yahoo Messenger come July 17th 2018. The service was once a very popular instant messaging apps back in the days, before the coming of WhatsApp, Viber, Facebook, Twitter and many others. The company says while it may be shutting the service down, your Yahoo ID remains intact for other services like Mail and fantasy sports.

Before now, Oath had also shut down AIM’s AOL Instant messenger back in December last year. Although the company gave no reason for the action, but it can be far from the dominance pose by the likes of WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and other chat service.

The company has been testing its new chat service call Squirrel for months. It is believed that this may be used to replace Yahoo messenger.

Yahoo messenger that made me ditch my GCE lessons back then (had already made my waec though). Always found myself at a cafe chatting.
Result finally came out and I told dad that it was seized. His response was stunning "I had a dream about something like that happening, don't feel bad"

Still keeping in touch with few friends I made back then through yahoo mail though.

Was very good then, however, just like trium & Alcatel, couldn't meet up.

July 17 is my birthday. I'm grateful that Yahoo recognizes my contribution to that platform and decided to honour me by shutting down on my birthday.
