4. Environmental Management System (ISO 14001) - OSS Certification, Australia
5. Quality Management System (ISO 9001) - OSS Certification, Australia
6. NEBOSH IGC - UK
7. OSHA Safety Specialist - USA

Also, I have the following Professional Membership Status and certificates
1. Full Member - IIRSM (membership number 305607)

I will really appreciate anyone who can advice or assist me in getting my ISPON membership.

There are diverse and various aspects of safety.

HSE Sciences,Engineering and Management also has specializations.

You may need to be a little bit more specific in your request.

That could be a browser or network issue.
Try changing your browser.

Alison is a good site.
The online tutorial is free. Upon completion of your course work and writing /passing the exams, you pay for your certificate to be mailed to you. There are also diverse HSE Related courses.

Can someone with HSC 1,2 and 3 and o level pay and write noborsh and work with an oil company

To start with, we believe you mean HSE

Health, Safety and Environment. This is the general or popular name the discipline is known by and not "HSC". In some companies there is a C which implies Community Relations/Laison. However, the general name is HSE.

Yes,with your O'Levels you can study for and write NEBOSH IGC (it is not noborsh). Also, with your background on HSE Levels 1,2&3 you are good to go. However, note that you must be grounded in your basics. NEBOSH is not a Nigerian Exam where you can pull any strings. It is marked overseas most times. You can never influence the result. So you have to ensure you are properly grounded in both knowledge and writing skills.

Working in an Oil Company is good, but you can hardly work for one with just O'Levels. Even those with MSc are finding impossible to get the jobs. Sorry but you can hardly compete with the graduates of today without a degree from a Tertiary Institution. Especially in Nigeria where it is common for most people to school till MSc and even PhD Level.

In addition, HSE Sciences, Engineering and Management is a multi industrial domain based discipline. You can work in Aviation, Shipping, Telecom, Oil and Gas, Energy, Transportation, Agriculture, Education, etc. It will be good if you remove the mental limitation that only in the Oil and Gas Industry can you apply HSE Skills. You can apply them in diverse sectors.

Also, note that the higher you go, the more you may need to specialize in an area of choice or of bias/preference. Some people focus on 2 areas while some 3. E. G. Someone we know focuses on Process Safety and CFD for fire and exposion consequences modelling.

Good luck.

GrAnDwEeZ:
what do you guys think about these hse programs that are being offered to corp members

The Nigerian system does not recognize a lot of the training schools. They only recognize the courses.
For instance you can do OHSAS and get your certificate from BolaChibeduAbdul Nigeria Limited. It doesn't matter. OHSAS Certificate is the same as long as the company is a truly registered training service provider.

So a lot of those in the NYSC Camps claim they are offering Levels 1,2,3 but backed by what body?

It is important to highlight here that in Nigeria, the most popular program is NISP/ISPON Levels 1-3. After which you can then go for OHSAS, NEBOSH etc. We see a lot of companies take 15-25 thousand naira from Corps members claiming a lot of things but with no real backing from any of the known HSE Regulatory or Examination Bodies. A few of them like Novelle have backing from a few popular bodies and regulatory agencies.

It is advised that if you have the funds, then attend these courses. No knowledge is lost (that is assuming they are teaching the right skills and knowledge). So you can do these courses as the basics. But by law in Nigeria, the HSE profession is governed by ISPON and the regulatory agencies of various sectors/industrial domains of the economy. E.g. NERC for Electricity, DPR for Oil and Gas, NIMASA for Martime/Shipping, FAAN/NCAA for Aviation, etc.

So you can do these courses. But note that it is just a foundation. Unless you do it with training companies that have the permit to offer training services from international bodies like OHSAS, BSC, NEBOSH, BISO, IRCA, INSO, etc. etc. To know which trainer has these certifications, you have to ask them to show their certificates, and sight it and verify their certificate number online,to be sure. Otherwise just do it for knowledge sake.

How much is nebosh and ispon?
Ispon and nebosh which is more recognised?

Because NEBOSH is:

1. International
2. Has a wider curriculum
3. Has a more honest /strict examination process
4. More intense
5. More expensive to acquire

It is generally considered the most popular HSE Certification. ISPON is local/national. However, we usually advise that you go for ISPON first as a stepping stone for NEBOSH. Remember that NEBOSH is more intense and broader in curriculum.

There costs are based on which of their programs /levels you are taking. Their costs isn't a flat rate. You will have to go to the ISPON site and the site of an accredited NEBOSH Training Provider to check the current prices.

Does anyone have any idea about online HSE training programmes?Urgent replies needed

There is currently no Nigerian institution or organization that offers online training.

However, overseas there are various degrees and certificate programs that can be sought, registered for and studied. A good place to start with is Alison and ILO Online Courses. British Safety Council (BSC) also offers online short courses on diverse areas in the HSE Discipline e.g. Working at Height, Handling Manually, and General Basic Fire Safety.
The materials are usually free. After reading, you take the exam and if you pass, you pay for your certificate to be sent to you.

You can check their websites or simply type "Online HSE Courses" in google and rummage through the search results.

HSE Professionals in the house, Goodmornin... please I'm a biochemist and I will love to go into the Health and Safety Field... I am a newbie, dunno how to start and all, I'm currently in lagos seeking for job opportunities but while searching, I don't mind training for an HSE course rather than staying at home idle. Please I need honest advise from you all, and the cost too... Nothing Too Expensive please, awaiting positive feedbacks from you all, Thank You!

The best way to start is to start from the basics. In Nigeria you are expected to start with ISPON or NISP. This is your road towards being a part of the Nigerian recognised HSE Professional Body. ISPON is to HSE what COREN/NSE is to Engineering.

Start with ISPON Levels 2 and 3. Then build up from there. Pertaining to cost, ISPON is one of the cheapest HSE Courses with a backing by a Professsional body in Nigeria. Unless you want to go for other courses from unrecognised/ unaccreditted trainers.

After your ISPON you can do other specific courses and then try to get field/professional experience. This will be based on your network of professionals (especially HSE Consultants) that you know. Then you can go for NEBOSH. Please note that Post-NEBOSH, there are various other high level applied courses on HSE that you can go for. But these are quite expensive.
You can visit the ISPON website or website of Trainers who are fresh graduate friendly in terms of cost.

So it pays to build from the basics/generic. That said, note that the HSE discipline encompasses Occupational Health, Safety and Environment (3 disciplines in 1). After the basics you might need to know of you are more of a Safety Person, Occuptational Health Person or an Environment Person.

Only few people can practise all these three. We pride ourselves to have done these including Quality and Physical Security in combination with Occupational/Public Health, Industrial Hygiene, Safety and Environment.

I did love to meet professionals who are so willing to help, advise n encourage on dz chosen field. I Read something abt ISPON on this Thread, need more info pls. kindly add 08187283702 to the Whatsapp group. Thanks

In order to boost your network you need to get contacts, attend conferences, register online at HSE blogging sites etc. ISPON is Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria. It and the National Industrial Safety Council of Nigeria (NISCoN) are the most recognised HSE Body in the country and ISPON/NISCoN is what COREN/NSE is to Engineers.

Currently there is a battle between the ISPON and another group Institute of Software Programmers of Nigeria over the right to use ispon.ng or ispon.com web domain. It led to the downing of the site for a long time. The software guys seem to have used their skills to beat the Safety guys on the matter. We all recall that ISPON used to be called NISP. Nigerian Institute of Safety Professionals (NISP). Perhaps we could go back to this or National Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria (NISPON/NIOSPON).

The executive of ISPON/NISP is currently not showing any level of seriousness in the matter. They are also not ready to go to court even when they were the first to set up a website using ispon. However, there are state addresses and contact details you can be provided with to know more about their programs.

No it is not necessary. Not at all. You can go straight for NEBOSH.

It is only recommended because professionals know that the NEBOSH program is more robust. They recommend ISPON as a preparatory course for NEBOSH. But it is not compulsory. Not at all.

It is like recommending you do a mock exam before the real exam. Secondly, for those who want to practise in Nigeria, it is eventually good that you have ISPON.

However, NISP/ISPON is not a prerequisite for NEBOSH.

There really isn't anything spectacular about ISPON besides the fact that:

1. It is our own. It is a Nigerian thing and they have a draft bill which grants them powers to regulate the HSE Profession in Nigeria.

2. To be a member of ISPON you need to go through General HSE and HSE Level 3 course, depending on your level of education etc.

HSE Courses are into 6 Levels generally. These are levels 1,2,3,5,6,8. Though some countries now recognize level 4 and 7. Even BISO now has a HSE Level 4 which is for Practitioners. All Level 1,2,3 course should be of almost the same content/modules and objectives. Generally, it then becomes a matter of prestige and whether your certificate has proper national /International Backing.

Also, it is a habit for professionals to advise prospective professionals to have their level 1,2 and 3 from ISPON or NISCN. This is because these are the main HSE Professional bodies in Nigeria. Nothing stops you from having both ISPON and BISO though. While BISO is a training company, NISP/ISPON is a professional body.
