Universally accepted fact is Great Benin Kingdom conquered and ruled the Yorubas for about 500years..
Benin Kingdom was more advanced than any Yoruba Kingdom.
Oduduwa is an Edo prince.
Better still for us Edo is that the whole world knows this fact as witnessed and documented in early times, unlike the Yoruba history that just started yesterday.

But in this thread facts don't matter.. The Yorubas will not accept the truth about their past as a conquered and subjugated tribe.. So lets leave facts out of it and just stick to name calling and insults.. I have abundance of that for the Yorubas.

For the Yorubas please tell me, why does other Nigerian tribes see you people as a very Useless and Cowardly tribe?
Nobody fears the Yorubas at all..
you don start again ..Nobody fear yoruba yet we control Nigeria..the day Yoruba say we are done with Nigerian the country will break immediately

the record that is there shows that the name has no Hausa origin except to edo fools and ibo fools too. Post ur research any one that shows the name Yoruba has any Hausa origin u won’t cause na fraud but na Yoruba name ur land ile bini cuz so long oranmiyan don know so u boys na angry folks and till today u bear such name.
Okay see what your learned Yoruba brother found when he researched the origin of the name Yoruba.. He even confirmed that it on record in "European" archives.. Even Europeans knows meaning of Yoruba. Thank God he no lie like una. He even compared your acceptance of the name to the Igbos rejection of the derogatory word Hausas tried to give them. Shame on you Yorubas.

[b][b]"I asked a lot of people to define Yoruba, nobody had a clue so I decided to return to history and I delved into what Yoruba scholars of the past centuries had written. Slowly I began to unravel the mystery of our name.
The first hint I got was from an ordinary search which spouted Yoruba. What does that mean?? I carried on, I moved on to the always ready Yoruba dictionary written by Samuel Ajayi Crowther which defines ‘Yoruba’ as a bastard and deceitful person.

Another came from the one I found on a scholarly written journal of Dr Taiwo Ayanbolu who insisted Yoruba is a name derived from Hausa language which means deceit. He claimed he found the definition at York Museum in England dating to the 19th century.
Before I go further here, I would like to stress how the name came aboard. It has been recorded that the Hausa-Fulani who had been in contact with the Yoruba even before the rise of Oyo Empire had for some reasons chosen to call us Yoruba, or Yaribansa.

The Igbos had cleansed themselves off ‘Yinmiri’, a name the Hausa-Fulani had technically given to them. The igbos have today refuted Yinmiri to be a derogatory word, however, the reverse is the case for the Yoruba. From findings I have made, Yaribansa is a Fulani word meaning Bastard. An extremely derogatory word in Yoruba discourse.
I read one of Professor Ade Ajayi’s book “Yoruba Warfare in the Nineteenth century” where he insisted that during the indirect rule era, it was necessary for the imperialists to give a unique name to the entire towns and people who spoke Yoruba language.

Somehow, they settled for Yoruba. Yoruba is a deviation of Yoruba which the Yoruba people of that century rejected. The Ijebu, Ijesa and Egba rejected this name vehemently but because during the Kiriji war (the Yoruba civil war) where the collapse of Oyo Empire commenced and the signalling factor the imperialists used to prompt the rule over Oyo from covers. The name Yoruba was foisted on Oyo and Ibadan mainly on documents and slowly the name Yoruba was enshrined in our culture and hence, our appellation.

Research shows that the Egba were the last to accept Yoruba as their appellation, reason coming from facts emanating from the first newspaper published in Yorubaland in 1859, goes: Iwe Iroyin Fun Ara Egba Ati Yoruba. This indicates that the Egba refused the name Yoruba as at 1859.

Furthermore, I have read the Odu Ifa and I have familiarised myself with many Ogede Ofo, Iwure and Ewi of the past generations and I have never heard where we were referred to as Yoruba, rather, as Omo Kaaro Ojiire, Omo Oduduwa or Omoluabi.

I am penning this for us to know the origin of the word Yoruba, it is a bitter pill to swallow especially now that the name has travelled far and wide, should we try to augment our appellation Yoruba? certainly too late to make any sort of modification. We might as well just carry on dealing with it.

shut up there fool another lie made popular by u and ur fellow edo fools. The name Yoruba was first written down in the treatise written by the Songhai scholar Ahmed baba way back in the 16th century when he visited oyo empire to refer to the people of oyo. The oyo told him they were Yoruba and that’s what he wrote down not the other way around. U tell strangers who u are cuz strangers do not name u. Yoruba is only a degrading name to a edo fool like u.

That is a compelling read, david

I am impressed with the depth of your research, never seen this before

I never felt comfortable with the name Yoruba

A name without meaning in my own tongue

I remain an Oyo

Respectfully

True royalty

Ife is also a royal state, and my brothers east of Oyo should adopt the name

We are related linguistically and probably by bloodlines, yes

But independent

Do you know not all "Yorubas" claim ancestry from odduduwa?

There are factions

P.S I also know davidnazee does not mean the words he says; He is only defending his culture best way he knows how

All is fair in love and war

Fire for fire

P.S My South-Western Nigerian Kinsmen....

Dead the beef

Build bridges

We need the brothers in the south more than those in the North as at RIGHT NOW CURRENT STATE OF AFFAIRS

I say that as a so called "Yoruba" with northern blood

If you know, you know

You are my brother

Relax

I know the north more than you do

My mum is northern

They see us as an ever available and willing appendage

To destabilize the south

The other tribes in the south are easier to dialogue with if push comes to shove

How many houses in the West have been burnt by Igbos?

I was born in the Edo territory and I was oppressed, we fought, we bled, and we broke bread

There was love in the end

The north's love is purely conditional on you bowing or being islamically inclined

You truly do not understand the mess we Yorubas are in

And the earlier we admit we have been infiltrated the easier

MKO

Awolowo

When will we ever learn?
