It beats my imagination how Lagos is so blessed with an abundance of water, and then we choose not to explore that means of transport.

Imagine the immediate reduction in daily traffic if we had an effective and attractive waterways system in the state; the private sector should be engaged in this process, not just the government.

In summary, diversification of the state's transport system is key; by this I mean embrace the opportunities of rail and water transport. The focus on road transport as a solution has proven for decades to be futile, especially in a state like Lagos with its ever increasing population.

Most of the traffic congestion in Lagos is simply caused by road ethics, major roads are in good conditions. Address road ethics and Police extortion points and you'll have a good driving experience on Lagos roads

Lagos needs an efficient tramline system, no amount of buses will solve it's traffic crisis, our people are not ready to park there cars yet and jump into buses..

According to a 2016 survey by the World Economic Forum (WEF), Lagos is the fastest growing city in the world.

The report also states that 85 migrants from other states enter into Lagos state every hour.

In other words, the population growth of Lagos metropolis is much faster than that of London and New York with a rate of 9 and 10 persons per hour respectively.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in Nigeria, over 80 million Nigerians move around using public transportation.

In Lagos alone, even without standard facilities, at least 12 million persons use public transportation every day. This translates to 15% of Nigerians, who have no other option than to commute using public transportation.

Sadly, Lagos has a terrific deficit in mass transit infrastructure.

And then comes Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

https://i65.tinypic.com/2psimnq.jpg

In early 2017, the Ambode-led administration inaugurated the Bus Reform Initiative (BRI).

The idea behind the BRI is to seek to find a lasting solution to the legendary transport challenge that Lagos state is notorious for. The project also seeks to formalize the state’s transport sector. All these were intended to usher in a new era in the state’s integrated transport management system.

As part of the BRI project, at least 13 new bus terminals and transport interchanges were planned for Lagos state. They include the Ikeja Bus Terminal along with other major terminals that are currently under construction in Agege, Ojota, Berger, Oshodi and Yaba.

In addition to these, 300 new bus stops and three bus depots are currently being constructed.

https://i65.tinypic.com/2r2q49i.jpg

And things get even more interesting.

There is a plan by Gov. Ambode to inject at least 5000 new BRT buses on different routes in Lagos before the end of 2018. This is part of the grand plan to phase out the regime of the infamous danfos from the streets of Lagos.

No doubt, all of these put together are fantastic ideas.

However, a pertinent question that begs for answer is this: will the new bus terminals, bus stops and the planned introduction of the 5000 new BRT buses ease Lagos of its legendary transport challenge?

Sadly, the realities on ground does not seem to agree with that plan.

https://i63.tinypic.com/xeqydk.jpg

A visit to most BRT bus stops, especially during rush hours, will prove that a reasonable solution is not in sight. At such times, a huge number of commuters are seen at these bus stops spending an inordinate length of time waiting for the arrival of BRT buses.

Note that the delay in the arrival of BRT buses is not due to the lack of the BRT buses. Instead, the delay in their arrival is because the buses are stuck in traffic somewhere.

In all of these, also note that, new roads have not been built in Lagos state. Instead, so many of the old, inadequate and extremely busy roads have been segmented in order to accommodate the dedicated BRT lanes, thus, further reducing the road available to other motorists.

Indeed, the construction of new bus terminals, bus stops and the planned introduction of 5000 new BRT buses are all brilliant ideas.

However, except there is an equally aggressive plan to diversify into other means of transportation – e.g. waterways, metro lines, etc. – Lagos state might just be going round in circles.

I deeply appreciate this write-up. Very revealing. However, I want to proffer some permanent solutions that will likely curb the traffic menance in Lagos.

Some of which are:

(1) The relocation of Head Offices/Key Administrative Offices of some irresistible or attractive firms to neighbouring states like OGUN, ONDO, EDO, DELTA, and so on.
Sadly, this might not be considered considering the fact that majority of Our political leaders have 100% interest in most of these firms(that encourage influx of people into Lagos on a daily basis).
Until Lagos state is made less attractive, the population explosion that inhibit free flow of traffic will Continue to be on the rise...

(2) There is need to diversify the means of transportation and thank God, the Vision of the Lagos State Govt is firm and focused here The various railway project should be closely monitored and fast tracked to completion, devoid of Political delay and Corruption. For instance, the LIGHT railway is taking so so long to complete and this is not encouraging. Sea Transportation should be tapped too.

(3) The importation of Cars and other movable Vehicles should be closely monitored. If the Government can put a fixed number of vehicles that should enter Lagos daily and enforce this rule, I think THE MAD CRAZE FOR ACQUISITION of 20 Cars by a Single Family will stop.

I wish some major stakeholders can find this very useful. I don't mind giving more solution, if contacted personally..

Year in, Year out, the huge gap between the perfection of the London Bus service versus the Lagos transport system keep rising.

I'm sure the long-term goal in Lagos is to eradicate severe go-slow, and create more time-saving means of intra-city transport.

The present problems, like you already know, include; Excessive amount of private cars on the roads, Very few BRT buses, and the badly-mannered Yellow Danfo buses.

The present successes are: Widespread eradication of Okada riders in major areas, and Provision of new 5000 buses in Lagos.

Short-term Solutions to Perfect the Transport systems are:
1. Create policies that charge car owners a yearly tax to pay for each car they drive. This fund can be used to Perfect the state òf the major roads. This will definitely discourage Lagosians from owning more than one car. The Rich will pay more money to drive more cars. This will definitely reduce Road traffic by almost half. The middle and lower class will be encouraged to take the air-conditioned buses at a discounted price, which is what we do in London.

2. Ensure the BRT buses go to more destinations within Lagos. This can be perfected by introducing mobile applications to track their buses, the scheduled time for each journey, and update them on any changes to their journey. This is what we use in London via Google maps.

3. Introduce the MOT system whereby the physical state of each car has to be tested yearly by the Transportation Engineers. Several cars in Lagos produce huge amount of smoke and noise which destroys our ecosystem. We need to ensure that only healthy cars are capable enough to enter our roads. This will make Lagos a beautiful place.

Long-term solutions are:
1. Professionally train the Danfo drivers on how to properly drive BRT buses, so that the government can employ these persons to professionally drive the BRTs.

2. Create intra-city trains. Unlike cars, Trains don't experience traffics beyond a few minutes. The London Underground trains have reduced road traffic by a very large extent. With trains, you can go from Lekki to Okoko within 30 mins. Lets stop procrastinating, this is 2018 already.

Please spread this vision. I hope it eventually gets to Governor Ambode.

Management and personnel would render all these good works useless in no time. If you've used BRT at Fadeyi and Ikorodu you will understand.
When everything is padi padi, wat do u expect? I knew of a qualified driver, who applied at brt and was to be given d job bt the employer asked for bribe, which he said he will never bribe anyone to get job, in d end, they push his name below and offer job to someone else that bribed his way through... Same is with management, so, wen all u get is half baked professional, nothing will work... Sometimes, i ask myself, does brt operator have engineer or maintenance team at all? They need to sack dem all... They are useless

Unplanned Route system and over population is the reason for traffic in lagos. More buses would not solve the problem. There ought to be a rail system connecting island to mainland instead of that bridge alone. A railway system plus internet of things technology would solve this problem by almost 80 percent.

Gov. Ambode to a great degree means well for Lagos as evidenced in the various projects he's commissioned, and the ones he's working on. Kudos to him for the urban transformations he's brought to Lagos. However, I must say the several hundred newly acquired buses won't solve the chronic transportation problem in Lagos. Lagos has one of the worst traffic jams in the world. So, when those buses are added to the thousands of privately owned commercial buses already plying the roads in Lagos, the traffic situation would be greatly exacerbated. In my opinion, for Lagos state to overcome the worsening traffic jams beleaguering it, the gov't must do three things. First, the gov't should build more roads to ease vehicular movements on some of the busiest roads in Lagos. Second, Lagos state needs trains - monorail and meglev. Who needs to ride a bus when he can get on an intra-city train to any part of Lagos? Thirdly, ferry services should be improved. With it, residents of places such as Mile 2, Apapa... can get to the Island easily. I love Lasgidi no be small! Eko oni baje! (I hope I got that right )

London and New York have had underground and metro lines for several decades.
Buhari cancelled Jakande’s metro project in 1984!
Since 1999, Tinubu, Fashola and Ambode have failed to revive and deliver
this mass transit mode unlike “clueless” Jonathan and PDP who revived the railways and built the Abuja light rail plus the Kaduna - Abuja railways. Trillions and trillions in budget and revenue since 1999 have been stolen by the APC rogues in Lagos state who pretend to be fighting corruption.
Can one conclude that any Nigerian comparing Ambode’s Lagos state to London and New York, which are run by local government chairmen aka mayors is one of the uneducated youths who are sitting around waiting for free oil money huh

For me, what is more important is that Lagos state has initiated the course to solving its most worrisome problem which is transportation.

I believe that with proper planning, yes 5000 buses will relieve the stress a bit. How long it would go to that effect I also believe would translate to positive growth, much encouragement to the government about the idea which I also believe more buses and better ideas.

In the end, I hope they get it right. Its not just about more buses, I believe there are enough buses to move people around Lagos but the roads are not enough while some of them need to be fixed.

One thing about great ideas is that they have to logically connect to work.

Ambode is a great gov. because we can see his vision. He is a man that knows that Lagos can work. And it most work.

I see Lagos as a prototype of Nigeria. We have to establish that Nigeria can work if we have good leaders that have good vision.

We must decide to move forward for the sake of our children. We can't allow them to suffer even more that we would have.

May God help us.
