BY ANAYO OKOLI

UMUAHIA- COALITION of Abia women are seeking the assistance of the State Police Command in their effort to end increasing growth of evil business of baby factory, rising incidence of human rights abuse, rape, forced prostitution and trafficking.

The women lamented that these societal ills, including many other obnoxious practices against women seemed endemic in the Nigerian society.

They have therefore urged the Abia State Police Command to strengthen its Juvenile and Women Centre, JWC, by setting up a special investigation desk to ensure “speedier and thorough attention to reports and allegations of abuses and violence against women and children so that perpetrators do not go scot-free.”

The women made the request when they went on advocacy visit to the Abia State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Anthony Ogbizi.

Led by the wife of the governor, Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu, whose pet project is championing the campaign against abuse of women’s rights and other ill-treatment against women, the women explained that the visit was to “encourage the police for speedy investigation and prosecution of incidences relating to women and children; encourage the police in the fight against teenage pregnancy, child trafficking, baby factories and obnoxious widowhood practices.

“The incidences of human rights abuse, rape, baby factories, forced prostitution and trafficking seem endemic in our society. More and more of our young girls are being drawn into prostitution, baby factories and rape, while women are being abused, beaten and sometimes killed even in their homes.

“We believe the police are doing their best but need encouragement and support to do more in order to bring perpetrators to justice. It is sad that sometimes criminals who perpetrate these crimes go scot- free. Most times, it is as a result of lack of evidence, refusal of witnesses to testify or simply inadequate investigation and prosecution,” the governor’s wife who spoke for them said.

According to Mrs. Ikpeazu, her pet project, Vicar Hope Foundation, has been trying to empower the women to take them out of poverty, the main reason some of the women were easily lured into these social ills.

“We are aware that you have an existing outfit, the Juvenile and Women Centre, JWC, however, our request is that you set up a special investigative desk, or whatever you may call it, to give speedier and thorough attention to reports and allegations of abuses and violence against women and children, so that perpetrators do not go scot-free.”

To encourage the police, she donated a desktop computer with accessories and some books on human rights of women, among others.

In his response, CP Anthony Ogbizi commended Mrs. Ikpeazu and her delegation and promised that the command would look into their request for the good of the state.

Earlier in her remarks, the chairperson of Police Officers’ Wives Association, POWA, Mrs. Catherine Ogbizi-Ugbe commended the governor’s wife for embarking on the project and assured her of the support and collaboration of POWA.

What should really be done about this baby factory menace in Igbo land,it's getting out of control, maybe it's because the poverty level in Igbo land is on the increase and the young ladies see it as a quick way to make money since there is no job in Igbo land

It is sick and cynical to sell babies like cheap commodities,. I stand with these ABA women no hiding place for criminals to wrongly deal on innocent vulnerable babies.

The Abiah women have taken a very good step towards eradicating this problem which seems to have been embraced as a norm in the region. I would love to see more drastic steps being taken by security agencies to stamp it out just as they've been doing killer "herdsmen" threat around the middle belt.

Babyfactory business is just as much a crime against humanity as mass murder.

God bless Abiah women. Ibo Amakah. smiley

That is my fear. Don't be surprised if some people arrive here to wail that the government is trying to stiffle business activities in the region for daring to contemplate checking this crime against humanity.

The mass murder u re talking about has turned ur state into a ghost land. While the Abians still go about their normal business as if the factory doesn't exist. keep comparing instead finding a way to erect a Batcher and take ur people out of that IDP camp
