In 2002...many French players were playing in European top teams...and naturally were exhausted from too much footy.(ok..na excuse...but some merit in it ). Plus some key players were injured.

In other words, none of the other teams that passed the group stages in 2002 didn't have many of their players in Europeans top teams.
