Nobody bashed Bidexii for advocating for a new Air Defense System. In fact everybody agrees Nigeria's Air Defence needs a total overhaul.

What is wrong was to give a "No" answer to the question of whether Nigeria has a functioning Air Defense system. Yes, we have an Air Defense System irrespective of the state it's in.

Didn't an obsolete Syrian Air Defense SAM shoot down an advanced Israeli F-16I fighter jet over Israel?

Have we not seen videos of manpads shooting down SU-25s and Attack Helicopters over Syria?

Haven't AAA's targeted and in a few instances hit/or shot down Syrian fighter jets? The L-39 of the SAAF was shot down with AAAs?

So, how exactly is Bidexii's comment correct that Nigeria does not have an Air Defense System?

You throw around requirements and risks because you don't chop off your hand because your finger has an injury. It is the educated thing to do, not an emotional rant.

As a result of that threat assessment in the late 90's and early 2000's, attack helicopters were purchased. This was because the top brass found out due to the unavailablity of attack helicopters in Liberia, our air campaigns had serious shortcomings. As a result in a LICW environment which we would find ourselves we cannot perform optimally without AH's.

Providing fact based assessments is not a crime. Jeez!!
I think it would be disingenuous to:

A. Compare your GBADS to Syria's. Some of their systems may be old, but they have a vast array of deployed systems which are well integrated - having multiple sensors, command posts and redundant systems.
B. To mention AAA when talking about air-defense systems.

Frankly speaking no one in sub-Saharan Africa has any decent GBADS. South Africa has enough systems for SHORAD point-defence at the Brigade level. Some other nations such as Angola and Ethiopia have limited area-denial capabilities, at a tactical level. That is about it.

There is nothing wrong with saying Nigeria has no meaningful GBADS. It is simply a fact and facts are neither good nor bad, they simply are what is.

- what's "very little time left" our Gripen are still good for another 20 odd years if we continue with our upgrades(through SAABs contract) they could also be upgraded to E/F if funds allow...... As for the JF17 block 2..... I'm not sure if block 2 could be upgraded to block 3......

- "as long as running costs are with the range of your budget." exactly!!!!!! If your defence budget is increased to let say 2% of gdp then yes I agree it will not be a problem fielding 1-2 squadrons of mig35 but with your current allocation i don't think it will be possible imo.

-agree fighter trainers could wait for now!

- yes!!!!! 100% agree
Buy the trainers first.

1. You can start training a new crop of pilots on 4+ gen platforms
2. You can use them in combat immediately. They will be much better than the F-7's and Alpha jets

According to a report i read some times ago, Nigeria wanted to buy 30 units of Roland ADS but lack of funds prevented that. That means that as of then our defense planers believed that what we needed to protect Nigeria was 30 units.
It really bothers me when people say stuff like this.

"You only have X to cover a country the size of Y"

Your planners bought 30 because they planned on deploying a force of a certain size and 30 was the number required to protect that force.

Off-course, Syria has an advanced Ground Based Air Defence System.

I wasn't referring to Syria's entire GBADS, i was picking a specific system.

Yes, Nigeria's GBADS is very obsolete, however it exists nonetheless.

Wrong.

Buy the 4+ Gen fighters first before the trainers.

For a country like Nigeria with a very developed Air Force, you go for the advanced platforms first.

The Tucanos and Alpha jets exist for the sole purpose of light attack.

So why invest additionally in LIFT when you already have a good crop of experienced pilots?

Pilots can be trained abroad in the interim.

* I keep saying it, irrespective of what the Nigerian budget says, the possibility of Nigeria buying a new fighter jet is very very slim.

Anybody who disagrees should point out where the Super Tucano is, in the Nigerian Defence budget, yet we have completely paid for 12 units including related infrastructure and ammo.

The thinking might be to look elsewhere, possibly lift platforms and additional utility helicopters.

Anyway, we have purchased 4 more AW-109s from Italy.

NIGERIAN AIR FORCE RECORDS NEW FEATS IN RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT, BOOSTS AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE CAPABILITY

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has recorded new breakthroughs in its Research and Development (R&D) efforts, leading to further enhancement of its aircraft maintenance capability. This became apparent when the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, in company of the Chairman House Committee on Air Force, Honourable Samson Okwu, visited various NAF units in Makurdi on 23 June 2018. The R&D feats included the reactivation of the Communications Control Unit (CCU) of the trainer version of the F-7Ni fighter aircraft. The CCU, which enables instructor pilots and trainees to communicate with each other and the control tower while on training missions, had resulted in the grounding of the aircraft thereby hindering training of fighter pilots. Ordinarily, the CCU costs about two hundred thousand dollars (about 80 Million Naira) and would require a minimum of 10 months for delivery to the NAF. However, through the ingenuity and resourcefulness of NAF engineers and technicians at the recently established NAF Central Avionics Overhaul Calibration Centre (CAOCC), the faulty CCU was repaired locally in a record time of just one week. The Commander NAF CAOCC, Group Captain Osichinaka Ubadike, while briefing Honourable Okwu, the CAS and senior officers, stated that the Centre was able to repair 3 units of CCU at the cost of three hundred and fifty thousand naira.

A similar feat was recorded by the Engineering Wing of 101 Air Defence Group (ADG), where the old, unserviceable Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) Rear Cockpit Head-Up-Display (HUD) of the F-7Ni aircraft was replaced with a modern Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) HUD at a cost of One Hundred Thousand Naira, as against about Two Hundred Thousand Dollars (about 80 Million Naira) that would have been required to procure the same unit from abroad. Group Captain Precious Amadi, Commander of 101 ADG, accompanied by one of his officers, subsequently conducted a test flight and performed some aerobatics with the FT-7Ni aircraft to demonstrate the efficacy of the repairs/modification on the two aircraft systems. At the 131 Engineering Group (Engr Gp), the Commander, Air Commodore Pius Oahimire, revealed that the Unit’s recently reactivated Machine Tools Workshop had helped to modify the Battery Cart for the F-7Ni fighter aircraft. Hitherto, the cart always broke down after about a year of use thus requiring significant lead time to replace the batteries from overseas vendors. However, the Unit was able to modify the cart by fabricating accessories that would enable the use of local and readily available batteries, thereby reducing cost and downtime. The 131 Engr Gp had also designed and constructed a Foreign Objects Debris (FOD) Picker that would help to clear all ferrous FODs from the apron for enhanced safety.

While in Makurdi, the Guest of Honour, Honourable Okwu, seized the opportunity to commission two recently completed projects. The first was a newly constructed and furnished block of 10 x single room flats for single officers, which was named after the immediate past Chief of Training and Operations (CTOPs) at NAF Headquarters, retired AVM Ahmed Iya, who was also present at the event. The second project was the newly constructed and equipped Cancer Screening Centre at 161 NAF Hospital. The Centre, which was named after a deceased former Director of Medical Services (DMS), late Air Commodore Emmanuel Nkanor, is equipped with modern diagnostic equipment and support infrastructure. In his remarks during the commissioning, Honourable Okwu stated that the two projects were testimonies of the sensitivity and responsiveness of the NAF’s leadership to the welfare needs of its personnel. He urged the benefitting officers of the SOQ to ensure they maintained the accommodation and charged them to rededicate themselves to accomplishing assigned tasks. He said he was excited that the services provided by the Cancer Screening Centre would not only impact positively on the health of NAF personnel but would also be accessed by the citizens of Benue State. He also expressed great satisfaction with the level of results achieved by the NAF in R&D.

Earlier, the CAS had commended the Air Officer Commanding Tactical Air Command (AOC TAC) and the various Commanders for the R&D feats, which he noted had further enhanced NAF’s aircraft maintenance capability. He stated that these were evidences that the Nation had the necessary capacity to provide innovative solutions to most of its challenges, if we all are, individually and collectively, committed and motivated. Air Marshal Abubakar further stated that his desire was to enhance professionalism by meeting the welfare needs of NAF personnel, being cognizant that the human being was the most critical element in any working system. He disclosed that Cancer Screening Centres were being established in NAF Hospitals across the country to provide effective and affordable avenues for early diagnosis, screening, treatment and palliative care to reduce the scourge of the disease. He stated that two more Centres would soon be established at the NAF Hospitals in Benin and Port Harcourt. The CAS restated his commitment to ensuring that Benue State, and the country at large, is liberated of all forms of criminality, which adversely affect our economic, social and cultural wellbeing.

In his welcome address, the AOC TAC, AVM Oladayo Amao, thanked the CAS for always attending to the needs of the Command and consistently taking action to address areas of infrastructural deficit in NAF Base Makurdi. The Air Commodore Nkanor Centre is the fourth of such Centres that had been established by the NAF in the past 3 years, the others being located at Abuja, Maiduguri and Bauchi.
