STREET RE-NAMING SAGA: Obiano Reacts To Umahi’s Allegation Of Discrimination. by ANSOM: 9:19pm On Jun 24, 2018 |
The Governor of Anambra state Mr. Willie Obiano has replied Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi state, on allegation of discrimination against Abakaliki citizens living in Awka. A joint press briefing by his chief press secretary, James Eze and Chairman of Awka South Local Government Area, Mr Leo Nwuba, regretted that the renaming of a street had been given wrong interpretation by some people. Eze said: “Governor Obiano is the last man to put down a fellow human being let alone his own Igbo brothers. It is totally inconceivable that anyone could assume that the renaming of Abakaliki Street was done with an intention to spite anyone. The question to ask is, to what purpose, really? “Governor Obiano has always been clear about what he wants to do about the new Awka Capital City. The former Abakaliki Street and the surrounding area have been designated as the entertainment hub of the city. That is where you have the largest concentration of entertainment hangouts. “It is also a part of the city that never sleeps. We have a 24 hours life there. Government has provided adequate security, streetlights, road markings and everything that would encourage a 24 hours life in that axis. That district is gradually evolving into what might be called the Las Vegas of Nigeria especially on Friday nights”. He revealed that when there was an effort to rename the old Abakaliki Street as ‘Willie Obiano Avenue’, the Governor had quickly turned it down because he wanted the streets within that entertainment circuit to bear names that reflect the offerings of the area. “He is meticulous about what should be where. That is why he has mapped out an area that would be known as the Central Business District within the capital. Other areas are also being carved out and properly designated. So, there is really no such thing as an attempt to discriminate against anyone in Governor Obiano’s plan.” Speaking, Leo Nwuba said the state has long designated another street to be named Abakaliki Street within the Capital City. According to him, “The new Abakaliki Street runs from Club Road, across Queen Suites to Enugu-Onitsha Expressway at the Parktonia Hotel end of the road. The street has clear signs identifying it as Abakaliki Street on both ends” he added. Mr Nwuba expressed surprise that there was no attempt to balance the story of the renaming of the street with the announcement that another street had been also renamed as Abakaliki Street. He explained that the renaming of the former Abakaliki Street as ‘Club Road’ was part of the on-going efforts to interpret the Awka City Master Plan, adding that the plan was being tweaked to fit things into their proper places. 1 Like

Story! What an operatic perversion of righteous intent, but the strategy no matter how noble the rhetoric,is betrayed and inevitably, defined by the state govt's action. To be sincere its not really a good one from Anambra state govt to rename the road to 'club road' without inducing the sensibilities of our dear neighbor-Ebonyians after all, people have always know their way to the club houses without necessarily knowing the street name-Port Harcourt& Lagos for example . The gesture especially coming at a time when people really feels people from Ebonyi state and some part of Enugu are seen as lesser Ibos by their Anambra brothers makes it even more compelling I think. We from Anambra are guilty of this superiority complex around our fellow ibos that i don't like despite being an Anambrian! Lets be our brother's keeper 2 Likes

Mtcheeeeew! I careless about what happened to another state, all I want Umahi to do is to concentrate on delivering of good quality roads, health, water, education and above all agricultural equipment for farmers to produce more Abakaliki rice for the rest of country. Here in Abakaliki, we don't care what the name of the streets bears, rather we concentrate on our daily hustling. For the record we have ; Awka Street Nnobi Street Nteje Street Ekwulumiri Street Nnewi Street Onitsha Street Mgbakwu Street from Awka Odunakwe Street Spera-ndeo junction which the govt tries to rename it Akanu Ibiam round about but yet people still refer to Spera-ndeo junction. And host of others Anambra state and it's people have the highest number of streets in Abakaliki but it is the only one we have in Awka they decided to change. The name 'Abakaliki' irritate you guys, but there's nothing to worry about. Time shall tell. 3 Likes |

achi4u: So didn't you read the article well? It has nothing to do with discrimination but in line with the activities occurring in the street. I studied in Nnamdi Azikiwe University and during my stay in Awka, i always knew the Abakilikians as those who are mostly employed as farmhands by residents and some other forms of labor in exchange of cash or food items. The sojourn of the average Abakiliki man in not just Anambra but anywhere has it's significant economical and societal value. You can only allow people to discriminate you when you first of all discriminate against yourself! |

achi4u: If I were Umahi I would keep quiet and work very hard to upgrade my state and the quality of life ,instead of playing the victims card. Naming your streets after Anambra towns doesnt guarantee love but working hard to upgrade or become better than those who look down on you is the sweetest victory. However , remember Anambra is not resting on her oars....Let the competition begins but no matter what all fingers are not equal. God created some people to be above others in some areas what matters is how you treat these people. I wish Ebonyi the best and I hope they grow to become a well developed state that will employ her people and not have them running in the traffic selling face towels and Gala. My prayers is with Ebonyi ,may God left them but I also pray Omanbala becomes the pride of black Africa. |

All Igbos resent Anambra and accuse us of superiority mentality ,call us ndi ogwuego and mock the way we pronounce English words but we can never cower before anybody,we have tough skin thats the difference but when we hit back they cry blue murder. Umahi is not very smart ,little did he know know that bringing this petty issue up solidifies the inferiority complex people accuse Ebonyi of. To make things worse he is the chairman of south east governors forum...shame! 1 Like |

OMANBALA1:Which one is playing 'victim card'? God did not created Anambra people to be better than anyone, rather Anambra people were lucky to channel their energy towards buying and selling and it paid off, today if you come to Nkwo Nnewi, majority of Nsukka and Ebonyi people are importers of different goods, if fact every state in ala Igbo is highly represented. What I'm trying to say is that that business you claim to do, others are also into it heavily, so like you said, let the competition begin. Ebonyi state is highly favored in terms of modern development where houses, markets, schools are not dragging Road with vehicles and Okada. The street trading you guys always mentioned is fast fading, the street trading I know is more legitimate than many nefarious activities you guys always indulge in. We can never accept to be second hand citizens in Igbo land else everybody answer his papa name. 2 Likes |

OMANBALA1:guy nobody get time to resent you, the ogwuego issue is very true sha that why we have the highest number of imbeciles in ur area, every family produces one. However, the inferiority complex of an average Ebonyi guy is fast going into extinction because wherever he looks back home he will always sees many things to be proud of, at least ur city is not better planned than my own city etc.... You have N30 millions in ur account I have N10 million in my own account what is how I manage my life. These are the many reasons Igbos will not get Biafra easily. You see what we are talking about. Maybe ibeto, Coscharis, nestoil etc are a product of ogwuego. You guys have to accept thst ebonyi is cursed backward entity. Which city do you have that's planned when all Ebonyi people abandoned their to go and hawk gala in Anambra and Lagos. You made yourself inferior because you guys stands for nothing. There's nothing anyone can say that Ebonyi people are doing better than others. Absolutely nothing. It is the major reason you people are treated like shiit all over Nigeria. [s] achi4u:[/s] |

Kasy08133625633:Irony of life. Here in Ebonyi state Anambra indigenes living here equals Ebonyi people living in Anambra state. We are not cursed. We are not inferior to anybody, do not take our sincerity for stupidity, we hate anything abomination which ur kind takes pride in indulging in. We believe that hard and legitimate work pays, we believe that if you do evil to get rich - evil will never depart from your household. We consider all this things and refuse to live on the fast lane. Evil things can make an earthquake to happen. |

Ifeanyi shut up your dirty mouth. Ebonyi people living in Anambra are more than Ebonyi people living in Ebonyi. #FACT. You guys always feel inferior, if not why would your gov complain and whine over a name change in another state? It shows nothing but a feeling of inferiority complex. If a whole gov could do that then it is all over for you guys. I careless if Ebonyi decides to change any street name bearing any Anambra city/town, and my gov would not even notice it not to talk of going to the press to cry like gov Umahi did. You guys should live above self pity because that is one of the reasons people view you guys with disdain. achi4u: 1 Like |

achi4u: Firstly, trading is not the only thing Anambra do since you want to go there. Anambra has always topped in every life endeavor and it is God given not per chance. Anambra culture is what is presented as Igbo culture today. In education we have produced more super stars than any Nigerian state. Anambra has produced captains of industries back to back and it is your inferiority complex that attributes that to ogwuego....Onye ka mmadu ka chie, Anambra fulu uzo malu omenani. The Igbo culture and world view was developed in Anambra and we are the leaders of Igbo nation and that wont change because it God made. You cant stain the mighty name of Omanbala by insinuating we have imbeciles....I am holding back from placing an everlasting curse on you ! My fatherland has blessed you ingrates immensely just like America has blessed me and I will not fight against America but you dare disobey us....The land of Anambra made you a human and can unmake you...Watch your utterances. Anambra people has been traveling and making money all over the world when you were still eating lizards...Running in the street and selling Gala is what your people are none for. It was Anambra people that took you as servant and made you and Nnsuka people a decent human and now you think you can address me The bible say servants respect your masters and you have not done that...You have not shown obedience, Nwa Ebonyi. Lota na okwulu adi aka onye kulia. All the Anambra family I know has no slowpoke ,so, where did you get your imbeciles from....Your treachery will be dealt with. If you can't respect Anambra land ane our people why don't you move to your Ebonyi paradise ? But you cant because there is nothing to do there. You see , inferiority complex is a destructive mindset ....lol. Your governor is wasting money building projects just to beautify Ebonyi to fix your low self esteem neglecting the poor masses littered all over the highway of Nigeria hawking Gala....lol. Are you people actually inferior or what, I dont want to believe it but your mindset says so. |

achi4u: I dont care about any stupid Biafra if you will not respect the place of Anambra and roles we have played in lifting the spirit of Igbo man. If I have the power I will create Omanbala tribe which will be likened to the tribe of Judah. I have not insulted your people because I fear God but you are pushing it...You dont want to see the ugly side of me. I have many ways to destroy your self esteem but that is evil before God and I don't want to do that. But I will warn you , tread with caution. You have been throwing your little punches and I am just brushing it aside but I bet you cant take my hits. Ebonyi is growing at her pace and strength and we are happy for you hopefully you can all leave and find something worth doing in your Eldorado. Anambra is not competing with anybody because we have a different destination.... You want to beautify your state and,we want to grow a powerful economy....BIG DIFFERENCE! |

Its good another street has been named abakaliki street. Honestly though, i feel that club road is more suitable to that road formerly known as abakaliki. That area is buzzing maka chukwu. I was in nigeria during xmas and also during easter and i can testify that that area is of the shizzle. A lot happens there 24hrs a day. And there is always security. Kudos to obiano. |

OMANBALA1:OK point noted. I don't even know who I'm quoting and who is quoting. The other person(kasy007) was saying a very bad thing to me and my people hence the attack. Truly, Anambra made me who I am today (I can't deny that) but the derogatory situation(s) I faced then is not here. I'm sorry for going the other way, but please kindly advise ur people to respect our people at least in a very small way. Hope you are not whom I think you are? |

izombie:OK. Did people miss their way going to different clubs when the name of the street is Abakaliki? Will the governor deem it fit to change the name of that Street if it's answering - Nnobi Street or Okija Street or Aba Street? Who named the Street 'Abakaliki Street' before now and why did it named Abakaliki Street? These are the questions one needs to ask before commenting. A street can't just start answering a name for no reason. |
