Good day house Has any one had experience with Wind Turbines, I noticed no one has ventured into it on the thread. The reason I'm asking is coz in PH now that it's raining season getting Sunshine is a major challenge. Last week it rained for 3 straight days with little or no sunshine. So I have been thinking if it would be best to augment the solar panels with wind turbines so when there's no so the wind turbines can charge the battery or at least reduce the discharge rate till sun kicks in. 1 Like |

I think you need a minimum wind speed on a regular basis in your location for wind turbines to make sense. Oga Pranil has done a live windmill install to augment his already very robust PV system and he is well placed to provide you support in this area. Sometimes you may just have to oversize your PV array for the rainy days such as these. CC Oga Pranil hardywaltz: 1 Like |

hardywaltz: I GUESS COST is part of the problem, and low wind speed in most parts of southern nigeria..save for victoria island axis. TAKE THE 600W HORIZONTAL BLADE WINDTURBINE, IT PRODUCES ITS MAX POWER AT 34mph windspeed, and 150w at 20mph wind speed. the avg wind speed in southern nigeria is btw 6 to 12mph, so imagine installing that unit, you wud be getting about 60 to 100w harvest from it, wch considering the cost is a massive waste of funds. in my search came across the verical blade type, which hopes to replaces to the horizontal blade type../ the vertical blades are more compact than the hopritonal types, and could be comboéd with solar panels...wouldnt mind getting a 600w vertical blade type to support my panels if the price is right. earthrealm: Does not work in Nigeria most of the places. Note the wind speeds in the turbine page at average 4 m/s the monthly production is 15 KWH which is less than 0.5 units per day. ( if you are lucky) the same 500 USD ( plus pole foundation etc) will fetch you 1 to 1.5 KW P of solar which will produce on avarage 4 to 6 units per day for more details search the thread with my signature where I have posted about vertical and horizontal wind turbines installed in my house Also, see the weather report ( live from house mounted weather station) the peak Wind speed was 12 KM/H which is approx 4m/s ( 1 K.H = 3.6 m/s)- Compared to wind the solar hit peak values of 700 watt/m which is approximately 70 % of panel peak output at STC https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=IABUJA3 I would suggest to invest in weather station or wind speed meter and observe wind speeds before seriously investing in wind turbines 6 Likes |

hardywaltz: Spend the money on a second solar array and you won't regret it. Let me shed more light: I was once part of a major wind project somewhere in Taraba state about 10 years ago (where there are gusts of wind). Upon installation, it was discovered the "blowing wind" and the wind required for a meaningful energy harvest were different things entirely. Worse yet, the cost of installing the turbine far exceeded the cost of the turbine itself. Let's not even go into peripherals and accessories. I'm sure you're aware you need diversion loads for when the winds get high before the turbine goes hyper and spins away (kinda like thermal runaway with batteries). The brakes might not cut in on time. Did I mention wind turbines are known to shed blades like dandelions in high winds? I actually own a small 3kW 24/48V turbine (refused to ship it in as it's pointless). Been considering putting it on craiglist ... for the past 4 years. 3 Likes |

earthrealm: I was hoping for something which would minimize battery drain by generating energy in the dark. I actually get good winds in my hood. ... got good winds till my neighbour got the permission to raise his building higher. A tall turbine is a very real hazard especially with NEPA poles snapping like twigs in my neighbourhood lately. The winds this year have wrought more havoc than probably all wind damage in the past 2 decades put together. Every thuderstorm comes with hurricane force gales these days. Was wondering whether I should consider extra tethering for my PV array. Besides, having meaningful harvest during storms is akin to getting water only when it rains ... in the desert. 1 Like |

rajo4real: Short Too Long didn't read answer: That happens when the Raspberry Pi sending the data to the internet has lost internet connection. Once my emoncms service on energy.bobby.com.ng stops receiving data from the house, it would display the last data it received until internet is restored. I think I fixed the internet issues Long Answer My brother I have been battling with network issues. The system is configured to thus. The Axpert Inverter, Victron Battery monitor, and the 2 Fangtron (Fangpusun victron clones) are all connected to the Raspberry Pi 3, The Pi then queries all connected devices for their output and captured information is stored to 1 - a local database on the Pi, and 2 send to my virtual private server (located somewhere in Europe) which is where http://energy.bobby.com.ng is located. e sending queried data to energy.bobby.com.ng requires internet connection because data is sent every 10 seconds unfortunately this has been the weakest link in the setup. For internet, I use a generic usb internet dongle which runs a glo sim and is connected to one of the USB port of the raspberry pi. The usb internet dongle is dialled for internet connection.. however the connection has become unstable and dies after some hours.. at least once in 8 hours, if I am lucky 12 hours. I have been working to find a solution.. something that will get the internet to redial after it has failed. My suspicion for why the internet is failing are 1 power supply issues, the Rpi requires a constant supply of 5v 2.5A to run properly especially if u are running many usb devices in my case all the USB are maxed out. The DC voltage regulator I use for the Pi which converts 30v to 5v 5A seems not to be living up to its name plate and is unable to supply adequate power to the Rpi which causes the usb modem to fail for lack of power. Second reason might be typical network issues.. Either way I needed a ensure the network is restarted once it has died.. took me a while to fix this but I think I have found a fix. setup a daemon service which monitors the network process file and pings my server. if after 300 seconds it can't ping or the network process has stopped, it initiates a restart. I implemented new process watch this morning so let us see if it works. When my dashboard at energy.bobby.com.ng as stopped receiving data from the raspiberry pi in my house, it displays the last data until it receives free data. The good thing is, when the Pi can losses internet connection, all the data queried from the solar devices are buffered offline and are uploaded once internet is established, so realtime data is always rethroactively uploaded to energy.bobby.com.ng once internet is esterblished. 4 Likes |
