The beauty about learning is when one makes mistake they'd be corrected not talked down. Even a professor of medicine makes mistakes and when corrected they humbly take up the challenge without grouse let alone a student in training. Mr OP, thanks for the information and heed to correction(s) and make adjustments where necessary, it'd only make you better next time.

If information shared isn't pleasant to you, review and point to obvious adjustments where you aren't okay with. Information should be to feed the public and it's our collective duty as individuals to bring to the notice of this to the market woman in the street, the bus drivers in the park and not to massage and rub our ego.

The truth about being a doctor is that it is not just about passing exams and that is the problem in Nigeria . If you can get the grades to study medicine you are admitted whether you are a psychopath or paedophile. The fundamental trait of carin about people in a humane way is never interrogated and so you find people who maybe should have been vet doctors or Engineers as doctors in Nigeria. The Nigerian doctor we see here on Nairaland is invariably without the temperament one expects in a doctor when it comes to human interaction.

Is it any wonder then that in the US,UK and elsewhere. The Nigerian doctor is brought before disciplinary hearings many more times than their peers.

At the core here is this idea that I scored highly in JAMB, studied and passed man exams and so I am a deputy to God.

This is not about knowledge but attitude.
An arrogant condescending attiitude by Nigerian trained doctors who in reality only know what they have read in textbooks and little else beside.
A wise doctor would never identify himself in public as a doctor and then proceed to engage in Abuse. That is bringing the profession into disrepute and is very clear evidence of poor training

For the next few days I will delve into Hepatitis B prevention, treatment etc from a Medical Laboratory Scientist view. I will try as much as possible to use layman terms for `a larger audience appreciation` and I will be brief as much as possible. It will be sectioned into days for easier follow up. Thanks.

Day 1
Today I will talk about a little history, testing, contraction and vaccine.

History : Hepatitis B is caused by a virus, hence it is a viral infection. It affects majorly the liver and can cause the infected person to develop liver cirrhosis (cancer of the liver). The liver is a highly functioning organ that to a large extent tolerate a lot of abuse. The liver can get damaged to as much as 70% before the sufferer noticed that there is something wrong with his or her system. Hence the need to get tested as soon as possible

Testing: Whenever you visit a good medical Laboratory and you request for Hepatitis B testing, what they do is to test for the Surface Antigen which is abbreviated as HBsAg(Hepatitis B surface Antigen). If you are positive for Hepatitis B you are said to be HBsAg positive and if otherwise, you are said to be HBsAg Negative.

Contraction: You contract Hepatitis B ( shortened as Hep B) majorly from sex and exchange of infected body fluids (blood, breastmilk, semen etc) and also mother to child transmission (during the course of delivery there is usually exchange of bodily fluids in which infected mother can transmit the virus to her baby)

Prevention: The number 1 prevention is abstinence from sex. You can also take Hepatitis B vaccine which prevents you from ever contracting it. The vaccine are given in 3 dosages(3 shots) intramuscular on your arm at an intervals of like 8 weeks to about 6 months depending on what is in place at where it is being administered. After your last shot, you are given another shot in 10 years time and this is what is referred to as booster dose. You should note that if for any reason you are positive, Hep B vaccines will not work for you; hence you have to go for treatment.
The vaccine works by stimulating your body system to produce what is called `Hepatitis B surface Antibodiesʼ which act as the primary body defender if for any reason you come in contact with the virus.

One does not need to be a doctor to understand Hepattis. In fact the top experts on Heatitis are virologists who may or may not be doctors . Most doctors have never examined the Viirus under any circumstances. All they know about it is BY READING in most cases. That information is available to everyone

That's for chronic hep b. Was educated on it when i took the vaccine. If it's not chronic hepatitis b, the body sheds it off after 6 months and the person becomes immune to having it again in future. Even d chronic hep b can be shed off provided d drugs are taken. D doctor said the drugs are about N20,000 for 30 tablets , so getting the vaccine is cheaper. General hospitals give the vaccine free.

What is important is that people are made more aaware of Hep B and how it is transmitted , how to avoid it by vaccination , hygiene/sanitation and to seek professional help where appropriate.

I think it is important to educate prostitutes and offer them free vaccination.
