Some members of Eziowelle Community in Idemili North LGA of Anambra state has broken the long silence over the exorbitant funeral cost in the community.

The community leaders have been accused of forcing every bereaved family to pay the sum of One Million Naira (N1million) as a funeral levy before they bury their loved ones.

On Tuesday, some of the angry members of the community spoke to the media expressing their pain over the issue. They said that bodies of their loved ones spent months in morgues due the inability of the family members to raise the compulsory levy.

The community stakeholders were led by Chief Felix Okafor and Emeka Akukwe. They said:
“As soon as the leadership of the town came on board about three years ago, they imposed a burial levy of N1million on every bereaved family in the community before they can commence funeral arrangements of their loved ones.
“This ugly development have forced many to abandon their loved ones in mortuaries for months until they can raise money to pay for the levy,”
The stakeholders who also accused the leadership of demanding a compulsory levy of N1million to the town union before commencement of any building in the community, said failure to comply to the directive attracted attacks by thugs.

Wonders!
One million Naira levy for what exactly?
Would make impact if same community can demand one million Naira levy for job creating ventures to benefit youths, and scholarships too.

This one na strong thing o.

They shouldn't try this with Muslims who need to Bury their loved ones ASAP after death.

But this is unreasonable na. Even mortuary stay attracts fees and in a short time the motu aries in that vicinity will be filled up.

Then e go come be double wahala for dead body

Obvious lie.
Bloggers, make una fear God naa.
I'm not from Anambra but I know a lot of measures have been put in place geared at cutting costs during burials.
For example,in some communities, there's a threat of the priest not officiating d funeral mass if you don't bury your dead within a month abi 2 weeks sef.
In most communities, there's no longer an all night wake keep, wake keeps end b/w 8-10pm.Failure to comply,a fine will be imposed.
Many communities have also banned cooking and sharing of food and alcohol during burials, just a crate of mineral/malt to d different groups,if any group want to eat, they cook and bring at no cost to d family of d deceased.

It can only happen in Igbo land. That's why many of their people result into drug business just to av enough to bury their loved one. This is bad. Whereas, they will be calling the afonja pple owambe stuff.

Maybe the 1million is for those who don't pay community levy of like N500 a year so when they die the family of such person is task 1m as deterrent to others to encourage community development.

But after spending years in Lagos and die they come home, when ask for community receipt they can't present, then they come to nairaland to post.

"community want us to pay 1million before we can buried our person"

Who is fooling who?

Greed everywhere.

So where did these old men that called themselves community leaders learn their greed from since we always hear that the people of old weren't this greedy/materialistic?

Nonsense and ingredients, some lazy people want to sit down and earn free money, try this with a mean person and your family will be the next group to provide the one million burial levy.
