Instead of bickering back and forth about what happened on the night I think I would have been better to pass a motion for the the total reformation of the arms policy of the Nigerian police by stopping the arbitary issuance of very powerful assault rifles as the primary weapon of the police, the situation which we have now where any policeman is just issued an AK47 rifle to carry simple civil police duties like crowd control, traffic control , vehicle registration checks is very wrong and must be stopped ...The police must have a special weapons and tactics unit who shall be the sole bearers of power weapons and be called out only when there is a threat that requires the use of such powerful tactical weapons . Every other police man depending on rank and duty should be issued just 500 volt taser , baton and .38 pistol as side arm if necessary ...the situation where even chronic alcoholics and drug addicts some already suffering from terminal illnesses and even mental illness are issued Ak47 assault rifles to carry out simple civic police duties cannot continue and should not be entertained any further...an assault rifle is not called an assault rifle for nothing As the name implies it's for assaulting a target and not policing .
You are the wisest man on this thread!.

The side arm and taser sef is too much. The simple truth is that the police is a dumping ground for illiterates. Corruption is rife up to the top; the police men are poorly paid and then you arm them with assault weapons and give them uniforms. You've created legal armed robbers.

You are driving and you see people in mufti with rifles; you only have faith that they are police.

Until the rot is cleared out, the police is made more attractive for graduates to join then all this will stop. In the interim, arm then with batons only and if necessary non-lethal rounds.

What's there to investigate again? His bullet was found in her, isn't that enough? 2weeks again? Why do I feel like these guys wana just spend cash for an issue that should be concluded in just 48hrs?

Even issues like these supposed to be dealt with by the state assembly.

That officer should be hanged by now.

Seems for now, it's

civilians Vs military
citizens Vs bubu
humans Vs cows
common sense Vs stupidity
reality Vs fantasy
importance Vs irrelevance

lives that matter Vs SARS

Should I be glad they are even taking this up? hell no, it's just an iota of what they signed up for.

Till I grow white hairs, I'll still hinge on the fact that these bunches called senate are actually the problem and not "a problem"

RIP to the dead.

We are getting there. If not for Social media, this incident would have been swept under the carpet like others. Please people, any unusual thing you see, post and make it public.

The government should sit up and realize they're there because of the people.

The senate has lost its purpose. That should be the duty of police and the judiciary system. The senate/ senators should please first purge the criminals among them, even though if it is only 5 of them that will be left after the purging for their are not many who are fit to be leaders among them. It's highly unfortunate that these are the kinds of leaders that we have in Nigeria

Wasn't Senator Aidoko sacked by a Kogi State court recently ?

This is obviously another strategy to win favor from the public. Rotten NASS taking advantage of this tragedy.

CastedDude:
The Nigerian Senate has resolved to investigate the circumstances surround the death of Miss Linda Angela Igwetu, the NYSC Corper who was allegedly shot by a Police Officer two nights ago.

Senator Atai Aidoko, citing Order 42 and 52, raised the issue, stating that while on her way home with her friends, the corper was shot and rushed to Garki hospital, Abuja but was not treated because they needed a police report.

Commenting on the Motion, the President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, said:

“There are two issues here. One, is how could this have happened? How could the officer mistakenly or otherwise have shot in such a way that led to this young ladies death?

“Secondly, we have passed this Compulsory Treatment and Care of Victims of Gunshots Act, and the President assented to it on the 30th of December 2017.

“Until we start holding people accountable to these kinds of incidents, they will not stop. What is the point of us passing a Bill, and the President assenting to it, then it becomes law, and still, people will decide that they will not treat a patient.

“Is it that they are not well-informed? Is it that they were not aware that such a law exists? There are a number of issues that we need to address.

“Every Nigerian life is important. Especially young ones that are just about to start their own lives and careers. This is a loss that could have been avoided.”

The Senate resolved to:

Mandate its Committee on Youth and Sports to investigate the death of the NYSC Corper; mandate its Committee on Health to investigate the non-treatment of the patient, and; mandate its Committee on Police Affairs to investigate the cause of the incident.

All three Committees have been directed to report back to the Senate in 2-weeks.

they should scrape off this nysc and create a one year vocational training for graduates instead.

two died in bayelsa days ago. another drowned in same bayelsa. weeks ago, one was gang raped in same bayelsa

this nysc is a waste of one full productive year of our youths, some lose their lives and others lives change for the worse after staying in a strange land for 12 months
...someone died and from the circumstance of her death it never mattered if she was an nysc member, she could have been anyone....its not nysc that resulted to her death

Just waiting for the day a son of a serving senator will be shot by SARS, that day there will be no need for any committee to sit and report any findings in two weeks

you didn't see the other incidents I mentioned. I'm guessing from your logic, it never mattered the corpers did drown taking a boat to their PPA, and the lady gang raped. it could have be anyone indeed!

The senate already passed the law that gunshot victims should first be treated b4 investigation into why they were shot is carried out which buhari signed into law, yet Garki hospital rejected the young lady and she died. The senate did their job by creating the law and it was passed, is it still their duty to enforce the law?.

You must not know Nigeria very well, there is danger lurking everywhere and with the prevalence of arms in the hands of criminals the police need nothing less than an assault riffle to balance the force

But they don't even use the assault rifles to engage a lot of criminals right now ...they usually wait till armed robbers have left before the arrive ..those rifles are used primarily to extort everyday Nigerians.... A well trained instant minute Special weapons and tactics team stationed in special point around a city will be able to arrive any crime scene on time to use special force and weapons if called upon .

Preach brother preach!! Unfortunately in the nigeria of today it will remain a pipe dream, especially now we have a tyrant at the helm of affairs. Besides, the rogues and criminal elements disguised as law makers that we have barely ever think like this. They are preoccupied with inventing new ingenious ways to loot and make laws like lowering age limit to contest elections or pass whistle blower bills. Or similar other laws that suits them. Nigeria is in a deep mess.

Spot on bro. But who will listen. sometimes the whole set up of the country makes it seem like it's a war zone. Why policemen carry ASSAULT rifles about is still a wonder...
