About 500 members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kuje Area Council.
Among those that decamped were former PDP stalwarts, Sarkin Samari of Kayarda, Alhaji Abdulhameed Idris Sabo, Hajiya Ramatu Idris, Yahaya Mohammed Gambo and other stakeholders in the party in the area.

Receiving the former PDP members, the APC chairman in Kuje, Mr Godwin Poyi, commended them for their bold step in joining the ruling APC, saying their decision was a clear indication that the present administration has performed credibly well.

He said APC is a viable alternative for good governance, adding that the party would carry them along in the council’s affairs.

Speaking on behalf of the decampees, a former PDP stalwart, Yahaya Mohammed Gambo, said they decamped due to impunity and lack of internal democracy in the PDP.

Gambo said they would work vigorously to ensure the victory of APC in the 2019 elections in the area.

A former two-term member of the House of Representatives for Uyo Federal Constituency, Hon. Bassey Etim, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress Party (APC) with his 6,000 supporters.
The ceremony was held in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, on the sideline of the inauguration of the APC state secretariat by the National Vice Chairman, South -South of the APC, Ntufam Hilliard Eta.
It was attended by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Nsima Ekere, the Senior Special Assistant to President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, and top officials of the party from within and outside the state.
Etim, who was a senatorial aspirant in the 2015 election, said that his decision to jump ship was a protest against impunity.
Etim said: “This occasion is not just another defection but a protest against impunity, a protest against turning a political party and the state apparatuses into a ‘one man show’, a protest against endemic lack of party democracy, and a protest against confused grand alliance”.
He lamented that the situation in the PDP had gone from bad to worse with dysfunctional ideologies and politicians desperate to occupy office at all cost.
