If we can have 3each of this on all communication masts in the country combined with some other softwares then killings and other crimes can be reduced or solved easily.

Do you have idea of the cost per one. I’m trying to do a write up in it.

We use the infrared HD cam in my org.with the ip addresss,u can access the camera from any where in the world both day and night.

A lot of people feel safe after installing CCTV (Closed Circuit TV) cameras in their homes or businesses thinking it will scare criminals away. Some even go as far as placing a warning sign telling everyone the property is under 24 hours CCTV surveillance yet we see reports of those properties being burgled, robbed and vandalized. Recently in Lagos we have seen viral CCTV footage of a guy who went into a shop and stole Apple Macbook and till today no word of his arrest despite the fact that he was popular on Instagram. I agree this technology is important to some extent, sometimes it helps discourage criminals but to think it provides all round security is wrong.
The main purpose of CCTV is to observe and record events of the area it covers. Depending on the type of camera, some CCTV cameras are very powerful and can give clear HD recording and a wider view while others just give a blurry narrow view. However, observation alone is not enough.

Benefits of installing CCTV

1. Footage from the CCTV Can be used as evidence in the court of law:

There are many instances where criminals deny the crimes and sometimes they go scot free for lack of evidence. There is no better evidence than having a CCTV footage, it is the easiest way to convince a jury.

2. The video recorded can be used to identify criminals

The case of the infamous Offa robbery is a perfect example of how CCTV can be help in identifying criminals. As soon as the images hit social media, people started identifying them and in a matter of days the criminals were all rounded up.

3. For insurance purposes.

Of course collecting insurance money for your stolen property should not be your main motivation for installing CCTV in your property but it helps a great deal especially when the insurance company wants to be difficult. If you have video evidence of what happens, collecting your insurance claim would be more easier.

4. To discourage petty criminals.

Yes I said petty criminals because there’s no way a well organized and sophisticated criminal crew will be worried about your CCTV. A face mask can solve that problem, but a petty thief, shop lifter, bag snatcher etc might be discouraged if he sees CCTV cameras watching him or her from all angles.

5. Requires little or no maintenance.

A CCTV system once installed requires little or no maintenance, once in a while you check if the cables are still intact and you clean the dust particles and so on.

6. It can save lots of money and it’s not expensive.

Think of the amount of money you will spend to hire physical security guards whom you must pay wages every month to cover a big property or office complex. Just install CCTV everywhere and hire few security to watch the screens that’s all. Money has been saved.

Disadvantages

1. It cannot discourage hardened sophisticated criminals.

Oh yes, it can’t and it won’t. A determined criminal will see a CCTV camera as the least of his problems. He can just blast the damn thing away with AK47.

2. It cannot prevent a crime from happening.

A crime that is destined to happen will happen even in the presence of a thousand CCTV cameras working 247. There’s nothing the cameras can do than just record.

3. It does not guarantee that a criminal will be caught.

Few weeks ago in Lagos there is a trending video of a popular Instagram guy who stole a Macbook from a shop and his face went viral because he was caught on CCTV. Till now there’s no word of his arrest and his case is a one among the millions of similar cased captured on CCTV that has gone unsolved.

4. They can also be stolen or vandalized.

Even a CCTV camera can be stolen or vandalized by a criminal and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. The ones that are placed outside a building or on the streets are more vulnerable to theft and vandalism than the ones inside the buildings.

5. The high-end cameras can be expensive.

They also have high-end infra red CCTV cameras with night vision. These ones are much more expensive than the regular CCTVs because they provide high quality HD recording even at night or stormy weather conditions.

Nice write up. But i dont see how number 1-3 can be disadvantages of having CCTV, compared to not having at all. Number 4 n 5 can be considered.

It is like saying disadvantage of wearing PPE is that it wont stop accidents from happening. Rather number 1-3 should fall under limitations of CCTV n not disadvantages. Just like PPEs have limitations too.

Good write up nevertheless

CCTV is good wen you have many apartments where you can conceal the main machine. If the machine is not well concealed, the criminal, after stealing ur property, will also take away the machine leaving only the cameras for u.

That's not a disadvantage. I have an eight channel night vision enabled cctv looking around my compound. I don't see how any of those things you listed can be termed as disadvantage.
Total cost was roughly around 160k because I had to buy extra wire to take to the gate and the back.
Connecting over the internet is easy, although I don't need to explain it here.

Maybe not all, but most

Exactly.

You can even trace them to their hideouts.

And when an emergency call is made from such area the first mast that receives the call will automatically have its camera switched on in the control room while other surrounding cameras in other masts are also automatically listed as having visual access to that area.

Normal vision can work during the day

Thermal vision can work anytime the target is hiding behind an object

While the night vision can work in the night.

We underestimate the capacity of surveillance cameras. They come with more intelligent features like motion detection, voice relay (legal disclaimer comes with this) vandal alarm and IR sensors that trigger screenshots sent via email or local server.

The times we live in requires that we not only seek protection for our loved ones but also business associate and customers.

Having properties secured by CCTV system per every 1,500sqm should be a standard in Nigeria.
Security should not be left to the police alone.

You'll need a DVR/NVR and the power supply unit, which depends on how many camera u intends to install

I honestly don’t know what DVR/NVR means but I’m sure they can be mounted in the masts. The mast can provide power supply.

CCTV doesn't only deter petty criminals. It also deters hardened ones. After perimeter fencing, it is the most important security measure. Third is the guards that monitor and maintains it

Well said. In addition to those you mentioned is "Light, burglar alarms...and my favourite...DOG! The truth is no single system is enough. A combination of them is the best.

Have you ever heard of "Off-site recording"? There are systems that will automatically save every recordings away from the site. Even if they like, let them break the machine in Lagos, you will still have the recordings stored in Shanghai.

As stated by someone b4.....Privacy is a key disadvantage but doesnt outweigh its advantages IMO.

You will also need constant power supply...hence extra cost for inverter should be considered too

CCTV is very nice if you can afford it.

Operating cost can be very high for those that have theirs online. I use to burn up to 30gb/month to keep my CCTV online and accessible anywhere in the world, before i ported to Smile Unlimited. Unlimited internet package is the bae....for all your gadgets at home

bros how many connected users do u have that makes you burn dat much? Because I'm considering going online with my CCTV too... but Dats cost dey scare me... please feel me in. thanks in anticipation

1st my DVR is 16 channel AHD, the cameras are AHD 2mega pixel each (16 cameras are active). Hence data consumption of the DVR depends first on the quality of your cameras and the number of cameras online. Like in my case 16 AHD 2mp cameras are always on 24/7

so to answer your question; the number of users dont matter as you only consume extra data when viewing the cameras online with any of the devices.

Eg, your DVR is at home in Sokoto and is online 24/7 (Data is being consumed locally). While you are in Abuja viewing with your phone (you now consume a separate data on your phone for viewing the CCTV remotely)

So the main data usage is the DVR that is connected online 24hrs, whether you are viewing online with your device or not, your DVR is consuming data as long as it is online.

So bro, dont be scared. You might not consume much. If your cameras are fewer and not up to 2 mega pixel, then you will need less. You can also control it by unplugging the internet cable when you are at home. (That is what my brother does, and he uses less data cos his is 4channel DVR)

For me, I use Smile Unlimited data plan which is very okay for me now. All other gadgets (TVs, DSTV, computers, and phones etc) are using same internet source which make it cost effective for me.
