Do you read? if you do, do you understand? and most importantly do you look into the cause of a problem before your verdict?

I simply stated what might have happened decades ago and its still in play uptil this time. something i think is wrong.
Nothing is wrong until delta and anioma takes responsibility of their actions......It was never an Igbo coup......why then should over 300 Igbo officers be killed coz of a coup led by an a man of anioma ethnic extraction.

I like you style of reasoning. see something you cant come to effrurun and say delta is ibo, if you check the 5 core ibo states, despite their dialectical difference, the language is understood by almost all, in delta, only the northern part has that similarity with Ibos.

It ll be unfair to called the ijaws, Urhobos, itsekiris, etc in the state as ibos.

If only you say part. fine.
Nobody is calling ijaws and the rest Igbo

I get your point..you can't say delta is Igbo in places like effurun or warri... the urhobos go vex

same way you can't come to my part of delta and say delta is not Igbo

It's kind of sad that the Anioma people allow themselves most especially their elder to fall into the divide and rule system where they are being told that they are not Igbos. There is a british colonial officer in the 40s classed the igbos into three areas based on their locations. The coastal igbos(The ikwerre, Andoni and Aro-Ikwerre), The south central( Onitsha, Afikpo, Arochukwu, Owerri etc) and the Midwestern Igbos( Kwale, Agbor, Anioma).
All this hullabaloo is a fall out of the Biafra war, and the sad path is that we are still seeing the after effects today. My father told me that places in Portharcourt like Oyigbo, Rumuokoro, Rumuokwuta and co were known by their Ibo names Obigbo, Umuokoro, Umuokwuta etc. Even Portharcourt was originally an igbo farm settlement known as Igweocha. The Coup by Nzeogwu was a very big mistake because it set about the chain of events that allowed us the north to fully cement their hold onto power in this country. There was time people from Agbor down to Asaba were known as Midwestern Igbo. Even the former name for the the Dein of Agbor was called Obi of Agbor, and the funny part is that most elders now alter history just to prove that they are not Igbos.

It is high time all Igbos unite we are all igbo irrespective of your dialect where you come from( Niger delta, SS or SE)
The Igbo People - Origins & History

By Katharine Slattery

This project was completed under the direction of Dr Leon Litvack as a requirement

for the MA degree in Modern Literary Studies in the School of English at the Queen's University of Belfast.

Igboland is the home of the Igbo people and it covers most of Southeast Nigeria. This area is divided by the Niger River into two unequal sections – the eastern region (which is the largest) and the midwestern region. The river, however, has not acted as a barrier to cultural unity; rather it has provided an easy means of communication in an area where many settlements claim different origins. The Igbos are also surrounded on all sides by other tribes (the Bini, Warri, Ijaw, Ogoni, Igala, Tiv, Yako and Ibibio).

The origins of the Igbo people has been the subject of much speculation, and it is only in the last fifty years that any real work has been carried out in this subject: like any group of people, they are anxious to discover their origin and reconstruct how they came to be how they are. ...their experiences under colonialsim and since Nigeria’s Independence have emphasized for them the reality of their group identity which they want to anchor into authenticated history. (Afigbo, A.E.. ‘Prolegomena to the study of the culture history of the Igbo-Speaking Peoples of Nigeria’, Igbo Language and Culture, Oxford University Press, 1975. 28.). Also see Catherine Acholonu).

Analysis of the sources that are available (fragmentary oral traditions and correlation of cultural traits) have led to the belief that there exists a core area of Igboland, and that waves of immigrant communities from the north and west planted themselves on the border of this core area as early as the ninth century. This core area – Owerri, Orlu and Okigwi – forms a belt, and the people in this area have no tradition of coming from anywhere else. Migration from this area in the recent past tended to be in all directions, and in this way the Igbo culture gradually became homogenized. In addition to this pattern of migration from this core area, other people also entered the Igbo territory in about the fourteenth or fifteenth centuries. Many of these people still exhibit different characteristics from that of the traditional Igbos – for example geographical marginality, the institution of kingship, a hierarchical title system and the amosu tradition (witchcraft). For some time some Igbo-speaking peoples claimed that they were not Igbo – the word was used as a term of abuse for “less cultured” neighbours. The word is now used in three senses, to describe Igbo territory, domestic speakers of the language and the language spoken by them.(see (A.E. Afigbo,1981: Ropes of Sand, Caxton Press,Ibadan. and T. Shaw:1970; "Igbo Ukwu: An Account of Archaeological Discoveries in Eastern Nigeria", Faber and Faber, pp. 268-285).

The first contact between Igboland and Europe came in the mid-fifteenth century with the arrival of the Portuguese. From 1434-1807 the Niger coast acted as a contact point between African and European traders, beginning with the Portuguese, then the Dutch and finally the English. At this stage there was an emphasis on trade rather than empire building, in this case the trade consisting primarily of Igbo slaves. With the abolition of the slave trade in 1807 came a new trading era, concentrating on industry (palm products, timber, elephant tusks and spices). At this point the British began to combine aggressive trading with aggressive imperialism. They saw the hinterland as productive, and refused to be confined to the coast. In 1900 the area that had been administered by the British Niger Company became the Protectorate on Southern Nigeria, also incorporating what had been called the Niger Coast Protectorate. Control of this area then passed from the British Foreign Office to the Colonial Office. Long before it had officially been conquered, Igboland was being treated as a British colony. Between 1900 and 1914 (when Northern and Southern Nigeria were amalgamated) there had been twenty-one British military expeditions into Igboland. In 1928 for the first time in their history, Igbo men were made to pay tax – they were a subject people.

This attempt to take over political control of Igboland met with resistance and cultural protest in the early decades of the twentieth century. A nativistic religious movement sprang up (the ekumeku) which inspired short-lived but feverish messianic enthusiasm. The rumours that the Igbo women were being assessed for taxation, sparked off the 1929 Aba Riots, a massive revolt of women never encountered before in Igbo history. However, the engine of imperialism could not be stopped, and once it had begun, Igbo culture would never be the same again.

From Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Igbo_people

The Igbo people (English: /ˈɪɡboʊ/; also Ibo,[3][4] formerly also Iboe, Ebo, Eboe,[5] Eboans,[6] Heebo;[7] natively Ṇ́dị́ Ìgbò [ìɡ͡bò] (About this sound listen)[citation needed]) are an ethnic group native to the present-day south-central and southeastern Nigeria. Geographically, the Igbo homeland is divided into two unequal sections by the Niger River – an eastern (which is the larger of the two) and a western section.[8][9] The Igbo people are one of the largest ethnic groups in Africa.[10]

The Igbo language is divided into numerous regional dialects, and somewhat mutually intelligible with the larger "Igboid" cluster.[11] The Igbo homeland straddles the lower Niger River, east and south of the Edoid and Idomoid groups, and west of the Ibibioid (Cross River) cluster.

Also Note Igboid classification

It is the same mistake you people down there make by refering to everybody who is from north and is a muslim Hausa-Fulani.
But that not withstand, every fact checked then and now have proved the following hypotheses:
-that the coup was planned, plotted and executed by Nigerians of Igbo extraction;
-that insignificant numbers of non Igbo were recruited into the coup;
-that those targetted, affected, or executed by the coupees were non Igbo especially of northern and western extraction;
-that insignifant number of persons of Igbo extraction were targetted, affected or executed;
-that significant number of soldiers of Igbo extraction were aware of and gave unalloyed support to, and participated in the coup;
-that insignificant number of soldiers of non Ibgo extraction were aware of and gave unalloyed suport to, and participated in the coup;
- and so on.
Thus, no amount of denial will erase these basic facts.

raumdeuter:
Now, let us look at a few historical facts and one or two more Igbo ”firsts’ that many may not be familiar with to buttress the point. The Igbo people were the FIRST to carry out a failed coup on the night of Jan 15th, 1966 under the leadership of Major Emmanuel Ifejuna, Major Chukuma Kaduna Nzeogwu, Major Christian Anuforo, Capt. Ben Gbulie, Major Timothy Onwatuegwu, Major Donatus Okafor, Capt. Ude, Capt. Emmanuel Nwobosi, Captain Udeaja, Lt. Okafor, Lt. Okocha, Lt. Anyafulu, Lt. Okaka, Lt. EzedIgbo, Lt. Amunchenwa, Lt. Nwokedi, 2nd Lt. J.C. Ojukwu, 2nd Lt. Ngwuluka, 2nd Lt. Ejiofor, 2nd Lt. Egbikor, 2nd Lt. Igweze, 2nd Lt. Onyefuru, 2nd Lt. Nwokocha, 2nd Lt. Azubuogu and 2nd Lt. Nweke in which they drew FIRST blood and openly slaughtered and butchered leading politicians and army officers from EVERY single zone in the country except their own.

I should also mention that even though this was clearly an Igbo coup there was one Yoruba officer who was amongst the ringleaders by the name of Major Adewale Ademoyega. It was a very bloody night indeed. Amongst those killed were the Prime Minister, Sir Tafawa Balewa, the Premier of the Western Region, Chief S.L. Akintola, the Premier of the Northern Region, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Federal Minister of Finance, Chief Festus Okotie-Eboh, Brigadier Zakari Maimalari, Brigadier Samuel Ademulegun, Colonel Ralph Shodeinde, Lt . Colonel James Yakubu Pam, Lt. Colonel Abogo Largema and numerous others.

They did not just kill these revered and respected leaders but in some cases they mocked, tortured and maimed them before doing so, took pictures of their dead and mutilated bodies and killed their wives and children as well. For weeks after these horrific acts were carried out, the Igbo people rejoiced and celebrated them in the streets and markets of the north, openly displaying pictures and posters of the Saurdana’s mutilated body with Nzeogwu’s boot on his neck, loudly playing a famous and deeply offensive anti-northern song in which northerners were compared to goats and listening to it on their radios, jubilating that they had brought an end to what they described as ”northern rule and Islamic domination” and openly boasting that they themselves would now ”rule Nigeria forever”. Though the first coup failed the matter did not end there.
this is why we need people like you to teach these children history..

And educate Yorubas how to fear these disgusting flat heads.

Don't mind them,If Nzeogwu is no more part of them,what of Ifeajuna who deliberately spare Ironsi? Nzeogwu even behave like a good soldier by carried out the instruction as planned.Am convinced that if he was the one that covered Lagos and West,Ironsi would have been killed that day.
Even after been spared,what did he Ironsi do with the power,was he able to punish the coupist?
It was even Ironsi actions after the coup that instigated the Northerners more to revenge.
FFK should go and sit down.Had it been NCNC join forces with AG in the first republic,we would not be in this mess now but they prefer NPC for Ceremonial President.Second republic,NPP aligned with NPN against UPN.
What are they talking about.They should go and learn how to play politics.
Notherners are not good but you keep on following them.Some leaders float a party,you all rejected it because of personal ego.
FFK will not help you,neither will PDP.Go back to APGA. Let APGA controll all your states and see how it will change the political atmosphere of your region as well as the nation.

You can tell that to the gods. He will and will be an Igbo man Caz he’s from the eastern region then. Ask yourself why he spared the Igbo leaders and killed majorly the leaders of both North and South. We need to face the truth here, that coup is an Igbo coup.

As I said, the killing of 300 Igbo officers wouldn’t have happened if Nzeogwu had killed the Eastern region leaders too. Remember all is fair in coup and war. It’s just a revenge play and you guys should get over it because it was your doing and the Northerners served it back to you hot

you are not well informed about history.
what do you mean by history? I learned the first hand story of the coup from an elderly Igbo man, he was right there when the incidence happened, it was an Igbo coup, the man in his 70s, proclaimed. I have so many Igbo friends, but the characters I read on this forum differ from the igbos I use to meet on a daily basis.

Mind you, I'm not into this politics thing, you can read my previous comments to confirm this, I'm always far from politics on this forum, but when I see the truth being denied, I'll speak up, I'm an advocate of truth. if the incidence that's so significant in the history of Nigeria is being denied, the incidence that plunged Nigeria into long decades of military coups, you can't expect me to keep quite. So that's my take, don't rewrite history.
