Service performed on the transmission on Monday with ravenol CVT fluid NS-1 compartible. The car performance so far has been fine. But bringing the oil in from US is very expensive at the rate of 7k per litre.

I bought 4 litres of original NS-1 recently from UK. Landing costs is a little above 50k. Be thankful.

Yes, I agree with you. I saw the NS-1 on the UK site and 8litres was above 105k to get it down here.

Yes, I do very much understand the dilemma. The P11E-144 that's the subject here and its successor the P12 use CVT model RE0F06A. It's the earliest of Nissan's CVTs and not as sophisticated as its successors as you have in the Murano from 2003 (RE0F09A, etc). Whereas in the later CVT series Nissan would always warn (scare?) that it's NS-2 or NS-3 as the case may be or nothing else, but for RE0F06A it is stated "Genuine NISSAN CVT fluid (NS-1) or exact equivalent." So there's room for substitution. For this I have found Mannol's CVT Variator Fluid. It's made in Germany, and they state it's compatible with both NS-1 and NS-2 CVT requirements.
http://sct-catalogue.de/en/?action=catalog
I have bought it, and will use it when push comes to shove.
Curiosity finally got the better part of me. Three weeks and 300km ago I used the Mannol CVT fluid in my Primera. So far so good. Hope to give monthly updates till the end of the year. The Mannol oil was green like NS-2 which, if all goes well, would infer that NS-2 is perhaps backward compatible with NS-1.

I know some repair shops that have had NS-2 in those gearboxes, due to none availability of NS-1in the Nigerian market. In fact, in Ladipo market, NS-2 has been used as a substitute for over 30 months now. I've followed up on some of those vehicles. Some have already done over 20,000 km with no transmission issue.

I guess it's Nissan's "use NS-1 and nothing else" that has constrained me. grin grin

Well, Nissan actually knows how to frighten constrain their customers grin grin grin. You don't expect me to admit to the former publicly, do you? grin grin grin cheesy

I have a feeling that this particular call is not premature.

Will you, kind sir, give us the name of this Ns-1 compatible fluid? Just to run a little research on it like we do with the other fluids too.

You can also research about the company "Aisin" and their genuine auto products ,I am sure you will be massively impressed.

There are actually two. Castrol Transmax CVT
http://weblink.carquest.com/acl/?mfgName=CTL&partNumber=06811

A LOT written about it on the web. For starters see https://www.my4dsc.com/castrol-transmax-cvt-transmission-fluid-drain-refill-alternative-to-nissan-oem/

Other one is Carquest Synthetic CVT CQ490
http://weblink.carquest.com/acl/?mfgName=CQO&partNumber=CQ490

They both cost the same N6,200/quart

Oga you will be surprised if you hear what one mechanic has done to our car of this thread. I will update you later.

We actually ordered Ravenol transmission oil from US through laredojohn and we got it for more than N50k. But after using the oil the car still had issues.

Thus this mechanic was recommended. The guy actually knows much about the CVT transmission and fixed the problem. But upon finishing the job he removed the Ravenol oil and bought the Mobil oil I showed here and put it in the transmission. My friend the owner of the car was afraid but he told him he had been using it for sure and if the transmission should have any problem, he would bear all responsibility. He added that the oil should be charged once a year. Since then the car had presented no issues whatsoever.

I was just surprised to the bones. The transmission that Nissan claim that must not use any other oil except NISSAN CVT NS1! wonder shall never end.

I will not comment on his methods.

I will comment on the bolded, this guy stands by his work, an attribute that deserves several rounds of applause and needs to be emulated far and wide.

It appears to me that only someone who knows his onions and is a master of his craft would go this far.

So they say, though I wonder why you're just reporting the "discovery" being the thread starter. More helpful, however, is to tell us what the issue with the car was and how this was addressed by the mechanic.

No doubt. But isn't this analogous to the phenomenon of magic you drew attention to in an earlier and different thread?

That was why I refused to comment on his methods...I think you should instead because you are the preeminent authority on Nissan.

That said, I am worried, I ran a search on the Internet, that fluid is not meant for CVTs.

It reminds me of the use of Visco 2000 in ATs because of its color.

I have been a victim before I joined the trade...someday the vehicle started moving backwards although it was engaged in Drive.

Then also the mechanic because I don't believe he deserves the title technician vehemently insisted Visco 2000 was as good as any ATF recommended.

Maybe there is something he knows that we don't

Yes, I saw your subterfuge grin
Well, not only is the fluid not meant for CVTs, but for vehicles pre-1994 (Dexron IID).
I'm not against ingenious methods, but they must rest on logical grounds.

How long has this change been done, and do you have an idea of the mileage the car has done since that time? I have a feeling that things may go south with that transmission very fast.

Please answer the question above too, about what was wrong with the transmission and what the mech did.

WelI, when the owner took the mechanic with him in the car for a long journey, he said after driving for a fairly long distance the car would get hot and it would refuse to transmit until it's parked for some time. Then the man also said it was not getting to 5th gear. Thus he diagnosed the problem to be a failing selection switch. He replaced it and did some few things (I don't know exactly as I wasn't there) and replaced the oil we put in the tranny with the said Mobil oil. The car has covered quite a large distance but I don't know exactly how much as I'm not the owner.
