You comment is senseless if you look at the how underfunded the public schools are. The public schools are joke for the most part. You expecting government to give you free education without required funds is asking for free lunch. How do you think schoold are funded everywhere else in world that have free education?

The multiple taxation is a seprate issue. You want free education up to tertiary level and you dont expect taxes to go up? Look up the take rates of those nations that have it when your done hyperventilating over 1500 naira.

Here is the reason why government is looking for a levy...and why it may not be enough.

The thing is, our educaiton budget for this year was N800billion. Let that sink in. 800bn for all primary secondary , and tertiary schools in Nigeria run by government at all levels.

Back in 2009...ASUU and FG signed an agreement, that established that adequate funding for universities alone should be N1.5 trillion yearly.(And that is for federal universites alone).

So, based on these figures...we need about N5 trillion every year to fund education, and at the same time ensure the poor go to school for cheap.

N1000 levy won't be enough. I doubt everyone would pay, and it might not even provide N1 billion nationwide.

Here is another figure....oil is $70 per barrel. We need it at $140 per barrel as at last year to get a budget sufficient for all of our needs.

You see the problem.

So it is either

1.Oil prices go up...not going to happen

2.We increase fees, and create new fees ie levies.

3.We take another loan from the IMF and hope they will forgive us in the future (after we have looted half of it,,but thats another story)

Increasing fees and increasing levies is the least bad option.

Note...I am not saying that the poor don't deserve education. I am saying that Nigeria is not a rich nation,has never been a rich nation, (which is why it is bad this government does not fight corruption adequately...and many people voted for bubu because of his image as Mr Clean)...and either we face that reality and adjust...

Or take another loan.

Most of these people complaining should go to countries like Demnark and Germany that have free educaiton...at the cost of high tax rates. (The Danes pay half their income in taxes).

If we tried that in Nigeria....everyone will put aside their differences and protest.

What bloated budget.?

Education gets less than N1 trillion in this year's budget...that is for all the primary,secondary and tertiary schools in this country.

Meawhile...ASUU and FG in their 2009 agreement put the level of adequate funding for universities in Nigeria at N1.5 trillion naira.

The education budget is scanty (and badly managed and looted from and even padded...but that is another story).

keep kwayet......... those countries that are pushing and already offering free education to tetiary level, what is their tax to GDP ratio, the least they are have is more than 30%, some have it above 40%, but in a good year, Nigeria will get 4%. If the tax rates of those countries are introduced in Nigeria, u will b d first to attack d government saying they want to suffer d common man. Nigerians don't pay tax, yet we get everything for almost free, that's why oil price will fall and lecturers will b owed salary, what's d correlation between oil price and lecturers. Only in Nigeria u will c a local government council that can't generate up to N400k monthly will b paying salary of N10million. People that don't pay tax will b charged N50k yearly for medical education in university and will still b complaining, imagine, even Ghana charges far more.

It's either Nigerians accept cheap and low quality social services or expensive and high quality ones.

If I become president, I will run universities like private institutions, income must be more than expenditure. Then all the money currently been wasted on universities will be used to offer free, compulsory , high quality primary education. Junior secondary education will not b free, but will b cheap cos it will be subsidized. From then upwards, u pay the cost for ur education. University is not for everyone, even in the US, 70% of their adult population are not university educated.

Same for healthcare, if u don't want to pay d real cost of healthcare, then take health insurance or u jump into d lagoon.

Free Education actually means you provide tuition, uniforms and sometimes transportation, boarding and food.

Instead of taxing these little kids, just scrap that backdoor looting program called school feeding program and get the money you need from there.

The taxes you pay arent sufficient. The education budget isnt bloated its underfunded. If you consider fact millions of kids arent in school and the decay in buildings. Your question should be is the money currently being spent is used properly. Do you send your kids to public school? Have you seen or been inside of these schools?

Most of then only pay lip service to the importance of public education for masses. Anytime its time to address funding they almost have a heart attack over 2k naira they will use to buy more data.
