What is wrong with Nigerian actors and actresses? After they were made by the same industry they would start forming; "I am bigger to act some roles", "Directors can't afford me". Well, I blame some of their fans that do hype them.

It's funny how people here throw in the "they made you" crap at her cos they feel pained that a woman has placed her value beyond average reach. What sorta fuckery are you guys into?
Every seasoned A-list artiste has a price tag, it's called self esteem. Everyone was made by someone or an institution, it doesn't mean they should kiss their feet all the time. I once quit a job that made me, cos I felt my value was beyond what there are offering. Guess what, I got an offer multiple times the previous offer. If you know your worth, you wouldn't hesitate to push out your boat into the sea.
Jeez, you guys are impossible

Genevieve still ahead of you, afonja and their loud mouth... if you be Genevieve that own several estate in choice places it mean your husband house will not contain you
Mr. man hold it there. Genevieve Nnaji made a statement like that some years. I could remembered one director replied her back, "You don't bite the finger that once fed you". Must you bring tribalism to every topic on Nairaland. The last time I checked Omotola still featured in more movies than Genevieve in the last few years.

An indication that the industry in Nigeria is crap. I have never heard an actor/actress go off the screen in Hollywood claiming movie producers cannot afford her fee

I do not think it is called "self esteem". That is a mischaracterization.

If you put a price on yourself and the market cannot or will not pay then that price is not realistic.
Ultimately the money does not come from the producers but the consumers. If producers pay her what she believes she is worth and they do not make profit then they will stop paying because the market does not support it.
If she wants to quit she can quit and move on but the word "afford" is not right in my opinion. The reality is that she is overpriced. Who is the judge? THE MARKET. The market NEVER lies.
No matter how "highly" you price yourself if someone is willing to pay that price somewhere then you are worth it. If no one is prepared to pay it then you are overpriced and that is why some industries shut down in some countries.

How many people who watch Nollywood movies pay one naira to watch these days? So where will the producers get the money.
Market is the final arbiter of value

Giftedhand92:
Nollywood sweetheart, Omotola Jalade Ekehinde used to be the face of the Nigerian film industry in years past, although still a celebrated actress in the growing industry, one can count on the fingertips the number of movies the alluring mother of four has appeared in recent times.

Just like her colleague, Jim Iyke, Omosexy has revealed that the reason responsible for her absence on the movie scene is the inability of directors to pay her worth.

“Most can’t afford me, some can’t afford what it takes to have me on set. It is a new terrain, all will balance out soon,” she said, during a question and answer session with her fans on Insta-story.

The ‘Blood Sister’ role interpreter further indulged her lovers by answering the question of why she included ‘Omosexy’ to her name and how she dealt with people’s perception of such a sensual name.

“My husband added ‘Omosexy’ to my name. I didn’t mind what people would perceive of me because of the name. People will always fall in line with what you present ultimately,” she noted.

Married to Captain Matthew Ekehinde, Omotola briefly returned to the big screens with an electrifying performance in the 2017 blockbuster, ‘Alter Ego’.

The reason this elderly, overweight, ugly and pompous woman continues to be relevant outside her matrimonial home, is truly a mystery.

Only a fat old man with a pot belly would be attracted to such a faded antiquity whose assets were conquered by gravity decades ago.

But really, I will say it till tomorrow. Omotola is not a good actress

Well, seeing it from your angle, you do have a valid point.
I believe she made a statement of fact (not of arrogance as many want to look at it) , and she isn't willing to lower her standards to the pedestrian level that nollywood has always been.
That said, the options would have been for nollywood to step up it's quality of production or she moves to a country where her value would be appreciated just like wizkid. We know both options aren't obtainable hence she just may be contented with her endorsements and branding.
Nigerians need to chill with the beef though, not everyone is contented with mediocrity

It is only in Nigeria you can hear that, once they start dating big men, they forget where they are coming from. The directors were good then but now they are all inconsequential. It is good they now belittle the directors now that they tell actors to work for free, pay to become celebrity or pay stipends to actors with the lies that the film is a low budget job even when they are sponsored. Hear how directors are been disgraced by does they made. Until directors stops their ills, wickedness, cheating they will continue to be messed up. Greed is now their signature.

I do not know whetther she said those things or not. There is so much distortion these days so I want to focus more on the message and not on her. I think every one who "works" for money feels "underpaid" the difference is that many still have to turn up at 7.00 am and go home late ,smiling and saying yes sir all the time. She does not and can afford to say . "I think I will just stay at home and relax with my family and work once a year or not at all if I don't get what I want". That is the difference.

I would want to focus more on that issue eaving her out of it and how it affects those coming through.

The industry needs to be able to monetize its efforts which is a big challenge because of the internet, piracy and so on. TV money is limited and Nigeria being Nigeria with MeToo syndrome you have already enough material to wacth for the next 12 months free online. Where is the money coming from? How come Hollywood is making money ?

That is the challenge.: extracting money from the market so as to pay actors what they think they deserve. Is it extraction inefficieency or are the actors deluded?

It is time for Nollywood to upgrade her game and stop producing backyard movies, so they attract the best hands
My brother, those movie makers don't have financiers

You will spend millions of naira from personal pocket to fund your films, even pirates will be enjoying the dividends. That's why Kunle Afolayon was mad about Alaba boys sometime ago

The private sector is supposed to move and fund Nollywood since it has huge prospects

Even the US government, through the DoD, supports Hollywood films by allowing them to use expensive military hardware like machine guns and helicopters

Jonathan tried for Nollywood but I don't understand Buhari

Well, an industry which prioritises quantity over quality would never get the heights it ought to. There's no way I'd pay to watch the tripe being churned out hourly. We have to address the quality of our movies as its pretty obvious many of the actors take cuts to re-read their scripts and even at that, they still fumble the roles.
Many of us spend our data to watch Hollywood movies on YouTube or download from the net. We would rather spend N500 to download a Hollywood movie than spend N150 to buy a naija movie . It's always gonna be quality over quantity.
Even Ghana that used to be in our shadows now produce movies that have some semblance of quality.

Omotoka does not offer anything to Nollywood that another actress cannot bring and even better

The likes of Nse Ikpe-Etim, Ireti Doyle, Dakore Egbuson, Genevieve Nnaji, Rita Dominic are some actors that are in her age range and dare I say, pay grade. They all act top notch movies and are paid in millions because they are worth it.

Sometime ago, it was revealed that B-C list actresses like Rachael Okonkwo take home 400k per movie, and these movies are home videos, not even cinema bound movies. You can imagine what A-list lead actresses in cinema-bound movies are paid

Omotola has a bloated opinion of herself if she thinks she brings more than the above listed actresses and indeed, she is not worth the pay. Why bother with her when you have such stellar actresses?
