NOTE " the imam didnt just stay without doing anything rather he continue repeating the beginning part of Hayatul kursiyu ( protection verse) repeatedly".

SubhanAllah... you could hear the fear in his voice! I think he repeated the same verse again and again just to compose himself. The words in the verse he repeated ( Allah! There is no God but He,
the Living, the Self-subsisting, the Eternal.
No slumber can seize Him, nor sleep. ) gave him and the congregation the reassurance to stand firm. In fact his choice of Surah is a reflection of his fear, he choice the most powerful Surah in case he dies... they are beautiful words to choose as your last words.
